WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama will discuss specific projects to improve the plight of the people of Gaza Wednesday as he welcomes Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to the White House, officials said.

Abbas will meet Obama in the Oval Office with already volatile Middle East politics roiled by the aftermath of the May 31 Israeli commando raid on a flotilla of boats seeking to beat the Gaza blockade.

The Palestinian leader arrived in Washington on Tuesday, directly from Turkey, which fiercely condemned the raid that killed nine Turkish activists.

He has called on Obama to make “bold” decisions to jump start peace moves in the Middle East.

The United States has joined other foreign governments and the United Nations in calling for an inquiry into the raid with an international component, saying it was key to any investigation’s credibility.

But Israel has declined any international probe into the affair, a topic likely to feature in Obama’s talks with Abbas.

A US official said Obama and Abbas would “discuss steps to improve life for the people of Gaza, including US support for specific projects to promote economic development and greater quality of life.”

Obama also wants to discuss a “long-term strategy for progress that we will advance through consultations” with the Palestinians, Israelis, Egyptians and other partners, the official added on condition of anonymity.

The pair will also cover how to forge progress in proximity talks between Israel and the Palestinians mediated by US envoy George Mitchell, despite the fallout from the Gaza raid.

“We look forward to engaging with President Abbas to move the process forward so that we can get to direct talks to address all the final status issues,” the official said.

Obama will also renew his call on Israelis and Palestinians to “ensure that neither side take provocative steps that could stand in the way of progress,” according to the official.

Abbas will meet with Obama in the Oval Office a week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled his own White House trip to deal with the fallout from the Gaza crisis.

Abbas set a clear rhetorical framework last week for his long-awaited summit with the US president.

“My message to Obama during our meeting in Washington next week will be that we need bold decisions to change the face of the region,” he said at an investment conference in the West Bank.

The Palestinian leader is also scheduled to meet with US lawmakers and National Security Adviser James Jones.

Ayatollah Khamenei thanks the nation

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei thanked the Iranian people for their massive presence in the ceremonies last week in commemoration of the demise anniversary of Imam Khomeini, the founder of Islamic Republic.
Speaking to members of parliament Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei said the massive presence was against the expectations of the opponents and enemies of the Islamic Republic and the people showed they are profoundly interested in Imam Khomeini and his thoughts.
The Islamic Revolution Leader called Imam Khomeini a manifestation of revolution and religion as well as the aspirations promoted by the late personality himself.
“The massive presence 21 years after the demise of Imam Khomeini shows people hold respect for the aspirations of the revered Imam,” the IR Leader added.
Ayatollah Khamenei described the Iranian nation as faithful, adding that the self-confident nation would not stop in its move towards perfection and salvation.
Ayatollah Khamenei then said the world was currently experiencing a sensitive situation whose outcome would affect the next generations, therefore the members of parliament must meticulously watch over the developments and play an active role in this regard.
The IR Leader said the Palestinian issue has undergone unprecedented developments, pointing to a change of equations in the region. “In the global scene too the developments show that the international status of America and certain European countries has weakened and that greater developments are on the way,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
Ayatollah Khamenei said the current situation has been a rarity since thirty years ago, adding that all state bodies must act in harmony with each other so that they can play an effective and favorable role in advancing the country.
The IR Leader said the parliamentarians must both consider the revolutionary aspirations and the existing realities in their legislative debates, adding that the road to aspirations must be drawn up according to the realities.
Ayatollah Khamenei then urged the parliamentarians to exercise a cordial cooperation with the government, adding that the scope of obligations of both bodies have been determined in the Constitution.
Ayatollah Khamenei noted that there is a way between ratification of an issue and getting that ratification implemented, adding that the Majlis must act objectively in its decision makings.
In the same regard, the IR Leader said it was not helpful to modify a Cabinet-submitted bill to the extent it no longer matches the capacities and facilities available to the executive body.
Ayatollah Khamenei also highlighted the role of expert commissions in legislation works as well as the supervisory role of the parliament over state bodies.
The IR Leader then touched on fifth national development plan and urged the parliamentarians to provide ratifications which supplement the draft plan rather than transforming the whole bill.
Ayatollah Khamenei concluded his remarks by urging the members of parliament to grab the opportunity in serving the public.
Early in the meeting, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani delivered a report on the performance of the eighth parliament in the past two years.

Russia wants UN to discuss Israeli attack on Freedom Flotilla

Russian premier Vladimir Putin has said that his country wants the UN to investigate the Israeli military attack on the Freedom Flotilla in the international waters while heading with a humanitarian cargo to Gaza Strip.

Putin on Tuesday lashed out at Israel for its attack on the peaceful aid convoy that led to the killing of nine Turks and the injury of tens others, expressing concern that the attack was in international waters.

Addressing a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Erdogan on the sidelines of a security summit, Putin said that Moscow would raise the issue at the UN, adding that he discussed the issue in detail with Endogen.

Turkey wants an independent investigation committee under UN supervision to probe the attack. However, Israel is rejecting the proposal.

Erdogan reached UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon over the telephone on Sunday on the same matter as the UN human rights council adopted a decision almost a week ago supporting the formation of an international investigation committee.

Meanwhile, Palestinian justice minister in Gaza Mohammed Al-Ghoul reached his Turkish counterpart over the telephone on Tuesday and offered assistance in prosecuting the Israeli occupation authority for its bloody attack on the flotilla and the solidarity activists, the majority of whom were Turks.

Ghoul offered condolences over the death of nine Turks in the IOF attack, and at the same time lauded the Turkish government and people for their support for the Palestine cause.

The visit by the Lebanese premier to Turkey would come after the country lost several activists in a brutal attack by Israeli forces against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aid convoy on May 31.

Jewish and Arab sympathizers plan to send aid to Gaza

The organization of “Jews for a Just Peace in the Middle East” in Europe and “Jews for Justice for Palestinians” in Britain have announced their intention to send a ship loaded with aid to the Gaza Strip in an effort to break the Israeli siege imposed on the enclave. The aid vessel is expected to set sail in the second half of July.

According to organizers, the ship will carry gifts from schoolchildren in Europe, in addition to medicine and medical equipment.  The ship will also be covered by television stations worldwide. Organizers said that the main objective of the ship is to “break the siege on Gaza.  This collective punishment on the civilian population is unlawful.”

Lutz Edith, one of the organizers of the ship, said, “Israel has shown the world its brutality and heinousness when it attacked the Freedom Flotilla.”

Another aid convoy from Algeria will set out on Wednesday towards Gaza, after the Guidance and Reform Society, which organized the convoy, obtained a license from the Egyptian embassy in Algeria, which also approved of granting visas to the delegation accompanying the convoy, after a wait of nearly one week.

The embassy delayed in granting the license requiring the organizers to provide correspondence from the Algerian Foreign Ministry.  Organizers made it clear to the embassy that their work is independent of official authorities, and after a long wait, the embassy finally approved. The delegation, which consists of 13 members, including journalists, businessmen and politicians, will travel tomorrow after following procedures for obtaining a license to cross to Gaza when it reaches Cairo.

9,795 British prisoners converted to Islam

Britain’s Chief Inspector of Prisons Dame Anne Owers says that the number of inmates converting to Islam has grown from 2,513 in 1994 to 9,795 in 2008.

In her report dubbed Muslim Prisoners’ Experiences published Tuesday, Dame Anne said fewer than 1 in 100 Muslim inmates have been convicted of terrorism.

According to the report, “Many Muslim prisoners stressed the positive and rehabilitative role that Islam played in their lives, and the calm that religious observance could induce in a stressed prison environment. This was in marked contrast to the suspicion that religious observance, and particularly conversion or reversion, tended to produce among staff.”

The report said that prisoners learn about the faith from other inmates or their family and do convert to obtain support and protection of a group with powerful identity.

It quotes a prisoner as saying “I’ve got loads of close brothers here. They share with you, we look out for each other.”

This comes as figures show three out of four Muslims in high-security prisons say they are worried about their own safety in relation with staff.

Dame Anne’s study was based on 85 jail inspection reports and in-depth interviews with 164 Muslim prisoners in eight jails.

Hezbullah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah stands as an indestructible intimidation; unshakable to the Zionist state Israel, though the Zionist regime in its war crimes and terrorist’s activities has martyred many of Hezbullah and Hamas leaders’.                                                                                              According to Abna.ir Ahlul Bayt News Agency & Lebanon’s website “Al-Nashra” wrote on behalf of a Russian sources, Israeli notorious terrorists agency Mossad has tried many a times to deduce the surrounding of Hezbullah’s Leader – Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah, to the extent that these terrorist emissaries came close to his whereabouts twice. Leader: Region on the Brink of Crucial Changes

Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, termed events in the Middle East, especially those concerning the chronic issue of the Zionist-usurped land of Palestine, as a sign of positive developments in the region.

In a meeting today with the Majlis Speaker, Deputy Speakers and several lawmakers, he presented a comprehensive analysis of the changing critical conditions in the world, and stated that all these cases are a sign of probable changes in the region.

The Leader of Islamic Revolution said great changes are taking place at the international level concerning the United States and some European countries and their influence.

He referred to the Iranian nation’s unity and awareness and its unique devotion to the ideals of the Father of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace), and appreciated the unprecedented presence of people in the ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the passing away of the beloved leader.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei termed amiable cooperation between the Executive and Legislative Branches of the Iranian government as necessary.

He stressed that cooperation should yield results, since it is not acceptable that both sides claim they have done all the works, and it is for the other side to take the steps.

The Leader made it clear that no notion of defiance on the part of the Legislature should be shown towards the Executive, and there should be no reasons for delaying of work at the Majlis.

He also stressed that the Executive should act according to the laws and the Legislature should make sure in this regard.

Costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars

English Radio correspondent Mehdi Geramifard has interviewed Beau Grosscup, professor of international relations at California State University in Chico and author of the book: “Strategic Terror, the Politics and Ethics of Arial Bombardment.” The interview deals with costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars by the US administration which has passed 1 trillion dollars for the American taxpayers.

Crisis of the American Occupation of Iraq Monday, June 07, 2010

The confirmation of the results of Iraqi parliamentary elections and the continuation of talks to form new government in the country were among important news regarding Iraq during the past week.

Iraqi Premier Nouri Maliki early last week went to the holy city of Najaf and met and discussed with the most senior religious authority of Iraq Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani about the country’s domestic situation. The meeting was carried out in a situation where the Al-Iraqiya Coalition led by Ayad Allawi once again called for the foreign meddling in Iraqi domestic affairs.

A meeting with Maliki, the head of Supreme Iraqi Islamic Assembly Ammar Hakim and former premier Ibrahim Jafari was another event that attracted the attention of the media.

Maliki’s trip to Kurdistan shows the serious move by the State of Law Coalition for getting the viewpoints of Kurds and Shiites closer for forming the new government.

The sending of the first Iraqi ambassador to Kuwait after twenty years represents Baghdad’s determination for removing the differences.

The increase of terrorist attacks in Iraq following the release of several terrorists in US-controlled prisons without the agreement of Baghdad government discloses the US role in the recent violence in Iraq.

Iraqi Premier Nouri Maliki early last week met and discussed with Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani in the holy city of Najaf. The meeting was carried out while the head of Al-Iraqiya List Ayad Allawi a few days earlier in a meeting with Ayatollah Sistani had asked him to back the formation of the government by the Coalition. But Ayatollah Sistani had refused to do so. Many political observers believe that in view of the status of religious authority in Iraqi social life, the victorious groups in the elections are seeking to take advantage of the role of Ulema and religious authorities for resolving the political standoff in Iraq. Although Ayatollah Sistani has not so far supported any political group, he has stressed that the new government should be formed as soon as possible. At the same time, the Iraqi National Alliance has also reminded that the country should go out of the current standoff quickly.

The head of State of Law Coalition Nouri Maliki, the head of the Iraqi Suprme Islamic Assembly Ammar Hakim and the head of National Reformation Ibrahim Jafar last week met and discussed with eachother in Baghdad. Finding a solution to break the existing standoff in the talks concerning formation of the government was the main motivation of holding a meeting between the three officials. At present, Nouri Maleki, Ibrahim Jafari and Adel Abodlmahdi are among the choices of the Shiite coalitions for assuming the premier post. After the confirmation of the parliamentary elections results, the formation of government is the most urgent priority. Thus, the biggest parliamentary faction should immediately introduce the candidate for premier post. In view of this fact, it seems that the victorious coalitions in the lections will have busy days ahead.

As Mohamamd Hussien Bahrol-Ulum arrived in Kuwait as the first Iraqi ambassador after twenty years, Baghdad-Kuwait ties entered a new phase. The ties between Kuwait and Iraq came to halt when Iraq attacked Kuwait in 1990s. The event has had adverse impacts on the type of relations between the two countries insofar as despite the collapse of Saddam’s regime, there is still unfavorable atmosphere in the two countries’ ties. It seems that Iraq is going to take a high step in normalizing relations with Kuwait by sending its ambassador to the country. Assuring Kuwait that Iraq is no longer a threat to the country was another reason for sending Bahrol-Ulum as the first Iraqi ambassador to Kuwait after twenty years. However there are still some issues that can overshadow relations between Iraq and Kuwait. The debate over Kuwaiti debts from Iraq due to Iraq war against the country and the issue of the fate of Kuwaiti captives and the war missing are among the current problems between Iraq and Kuwait that should be solved.

The disclosure of the relation between the releasing of terrorists detained in the US-controlled jails with the recent insecurities in Iraq has left no doubt that the United States is behind the instability in Iraq. The spokesman for Baghdad Operation Headquarters Qassem Atta has said that 86 terrorists have been arrested during the past two months who have been kept in the US-controlled Buka prisons. The United States without informing Iraqi forces and intelligence agencies has released a large number of them. These terrorists most of whom have been Al-Qaeda members have been placed at the commanding level after release. Evidence shows that these terrorists were involved in the recent operations in different Iraqi cities. What is important is that the released terrorists have been trained in the US-controlled prisons. All of this shows that the US circles have relations with Al-Qaeda.

Although the Washington officials claim that they are fighting with terrorism and Al-Qaeda in Iraq, there are numerous documents and evidence showing that the US circles are financing and arming terrorist groups in Iraq.
