JNN 07 Sep 2011 : Fresh revelations about British officials’ seeking to win lucrative Libyan oil deals have confirmed Britain’s determination to exploit Libya’s resources.

As the British government is under fire for its secret ties to the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, new revelations about a British minister’s role in a $1billion Libyan oil deal have raised more questions about British government’s integrity and the details of its operations behind closed doors.

Recently, it was revealed that the Tory minister in the Department of International Development, Alan Duncan, has secured a lucrative deal for the oil company Vitol and its chief Ian Taylor to cut off the fuel supply to Gaddafi’s forces bringing huge profits for the company.

In May this year, the British officials working in the Foreign Office formed “Libyan oil cell” launching a secret campaign to weaken Gaddafi’s regime by taking control of flow of oil across Libya.

The unit helped Vitol to take petrol and gas into Benghazi and exploit crude oil. The British government assured Vitol that the revolutionary forces would pay for the supplies after taking control of Gaddafi’s assets.

As the secret documents found in Gaddafi’s Foreign Minister Kusa Musa’s office have revealed secret ties between British officials and Gaddafi’s regime, more questions are raised about the purposes behind Britain’s involvement in Libyan war.

Leaked document even revealed Britain’s role in the rendition of the military commander of Libyan revolutionary forces to Gaddafi’s regime. According to the documents, the British government even provided Gaddafi with information about anti-Gaddafi Libyan expatriates living in the UK.

Interestingly, the British government endorsed a UN Security Council resolution urging for a no-fly zone over Libya under the pretext to protect Libya’s civilian population from Gaddafi’s forces.

Soon afterwards, the original intention of Western powers was revealed as the French government called it “fair and logical” to grant lucrative oil deals to governments that first helped the revolutionaries.

As the British Petroleum has announced plans to resume operation in the oil-rich country and revelations about British officials’ role in landing themselves huge profits from supplying the revolutionaries with oil have been made, Britain’s purpose for invading Libya has been unveiled.

British Prime Minister David Cameron told the MPs that his government’s engagement in the Libyan war was for humanitarian purposes, however, he never knew that once dealings that went behind closed doors are unveiled, the British people and the international community would find out the truth.
