JNN 01 Feb 2011 : Israeli leaders are anxiously watching the current developments in Egypt with their analysts warning of a restoration of Islamic rule in Egypt after centuries.
As the wave of unprecedented popular protests continued to engulf Egypt, Israeli officials have been nervously eying developments and assessing the likely impact on ties.
The Zionist premier Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted he is “attentively following what is going on in Egypt” after holding late-night talks with US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday.
He is much concerned about a ‘peace’ between ‘Israel’ and Egypt which was put in place by Anwar Sadat who was executed after signing the peace deal withthe Zionist regime.
Israel’s two top-selling dailies ran a banner headline on their front pages on Sunday, proclaiming “A New Middle East” and raising the specter of Islamic rulers filling the political vacuum left by the expected end of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorial rule.
“In this kind of chaotic situation, the advantage of groups like the Muslim Brotherhood is that they are the most organized and also the most resolute,” said Benjamin Miller, a Haifa University expert on Middle East conflicts and security.
Haaretz newspaper warned that Israel is facing aggravating strategy distress in light of the continuing loss of its middle eastern allies and urged the Israeli government to swiftly move to find a way out of the current crisis and new regional friends.
Israeli Newspaper Haaretz stated on Sunday that Israel’s increasing isolation in the region and the noted weakness of the US administration would make the former to look for solutions and new allies.
A senior Israeli security official said that Israel now has fears against the domino effect and winds of change in the region, noting that the events in Egypt took Israel by surprise and its intelligence agencies did not know the situation could explode and evolve like this.
Israeli military and political leaders embarked nowadays to hold meetings and consultations to assess the situation in Egypt and the consequent impacts on the strategic balance in the region.
The Israeli military radio reported that the Israeli war ministry holds successive meetings to assess the developments in Egypt and discuss the implications of the possible removal of Hosni Mubarak on Israel.
In this regard, different Israeli media outlets hailed the appointment of intelligence director Omar Suleiman as the Egyptian vice-president by Mubarak and described him as Israel’s close friend.
Some radio stations and newspapers gave a summary about Suleiman’s political life and his prominent positions in favor of Israel.
