JNN 11th October 2026 Islamabad : The federal government has imposed a state of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution following approval by President Asif Ali Zardari.
Emergency and Governor’s Rule in KP
The intervention was enacted via Articles 232 (proclamation of emergency) and 234 (failure of constitutional machinery in a province) of the Constitution of Pakistan.
The federal government formed an 11-member technocratic KP Advisory Council to assist Governor Faisal Karim Kundi in managing the province.
Dr. Muhammad Fakhr Alam Irfan (Grade 22 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service) was appointed as the new Chief Secretary of KP with immediate effect.
Pakistan Army troops and assets have been authorized for deployment in aid of civil power, with shipping containers and heavy police cordons deployed around Peshawar.
PTI Long March and Provincial Reaction
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders—including Chief Minister Sohail Afridi—have rejected the federal move as illegal and unconstitutional, vowing that the long march and protests directed toward Islamabad/Peshawar will continue until demands regarding Imran Khan’s medical care and legal access are met.
Local internet and mobile data services experienced slowdowns or disruptions in parts of Peshawar and selected cities, while political uncertainty persists as PTI continues its mobilization centered around areas like the Swabi Interchange.
The where abouts of the CM Sohail Afridi, and other PTI leaders are still unknown, as due to Internet Black Out , in most of the KPK province, the connections are almost negligible.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman has rejected the act of imposition of Emergency & Governor Rule , and has also hinted on joining hands with the Grand opposition to oppose this undemocratic act.
The Bar Associations have also condemned the Act, and Lahore Bar have called for a Strike on Monday , and will boycott the proceedings of the Courts.
