Pakistan hits back hard at US over War threat

JNN 16 Sept 2011 : Pakistani government has denounced the recent US warning to retaliate against pro-Taliban militants based in Pakistan’s troubled tribal region along the Afghan border.

Pakistan foreign ministry says recent warnings by the Pentagon go against Pakistani cooperation on security.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Wednesday that the United States would do whatever it took to defend American forces in Afghanistan from Pakistan-based militants, indicating that Washington could give a go-ahead to a military operation inside Pakistan.

“These remarks are out of line with the kind of cooperation that exists between the two countries. Terrorism and militancy is a complex issue,” AFP quoted Pakistani Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua as saying on Thursday.

“It requires cooperation between all the countries concerned. Pakistan’s cooperation in this regard has been persistent,” she added.

“We have identified our position on all these issues. Pakistan and US are strategic partners and both sides need to discuss all issues in a cooperative manner,” Janjua noted

The remarks come after Panetta expressed frustration with Pakistan’s government, and warned that the United States will not allow the attacks on US forces from Pakistan-based militants to continue.

“The message they need to know is: we’re going to do everything we can to defend our forces,” Panetta said.

”Time and again we’ve urged the Pakistanis to exercise their influence over these kinds of attacks from the Haqqanis, and we have made very little progress in that area,” the US defense secretary said.

“I’m not going to talk about how we’re going to respond. … We’re not going to allow these types of attacks to go on,” he added.

The US ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker on Wednesday blamed the Haqqani terror network for the attacks against the American embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul.

The Haqqani network is an independent militant group in Afghanistan and Pakistan that is closely allied with the Taliban.

On Wednesday, the top commander for NATO and US forces in Afghanistan, US Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, said the Kabul attacks left 27 people dead.

The relations between Washington and Islamabad have been deteriorated following the alleged US killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a compound close to a military academy not far from the Pakistani capital.

US officials accuse Islamabad of having connections with militant groups. Some White House officials suggest that Islamabad was aware of bin Laden’s location, demanding a strong response.

Pakistani lawmakers have recently passed a resolution condemning the recent US raid inside Pakistan that allegedly killed bin Laden, demanding a review of ties with the US and other Western countries.

It warned that the repetition of such attacks could have dire consequences for peace and security in the region and the world.

President Obama has frequently blamed Pakistan for not doing enough to fight terrorism in its troubled northwestern tribal belt along the Afghan border.

This is while US planes and helicopters have increasingly violated Pakistani airspace over the past months.

The US claims its air raids target militants who cross the Pakistani border into Afghanistan. But locals say civilians are the main victims of the unauthorized attacks.

The unauthorized US drone attacks have drawn strong criticism from the Pakistani people and officials.

The US invaded Afghanistan with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the region, however, after nine years the region remains unstable and militancy has expanded towards Pakistan.US have failed to curb Militancy and terrorism , even  With its  strong Presence of the Hundred of thousands of troops in Afghanistan , rather the terrorism have increased in many folds with  their Presence , and the terrorist have been benefited with their Presence , which are trained in Afghanistan , frequently cross the Afghan – Pak  Border , to implement their evil designs of terrorism in Pakistan. Due to which thousands of Innocent Citizens have been martyred. Rather the situation clearly indicates that the Main cause of terrorism in the region is the Presence of US forces in Afghanistan.

Top Pentagon official Brigadier General Stephen Townsend conceded that contractor funding is still ending up in the hands of the Taliban.

The comments come a month after the military estimated that $360 million had ended up in the hands of the Taliban and other criminals in Afghanistan, and Townsend would only say that the military is still working on how to “stem the flow.”

The problem is far from a new one though, and for years reports have kept cropping up that contractors are paying “protection” money to the Taliban out of their U.S. funding. The military may be “working on” a solution, but so far that work has not paid dividends

Analysts say the US is looking for an excuse to expand its military operations in the troubled South and Central Asian region to secure bases near Russia and China.
