JNN 06 June 2011  : Britain and the US have made an attempt at the UN Security Council to lift the sanctions against former Taliban chieftains to encourage other insurgents to quit the terror group.

The scheme promoted by both the UK and the US aims at scrapping some of the restrictions imposed on Taliban members after the 9/11 attacks on the US soil.

As this is even a fact that Taliban mercenaries are the creation of the American CIA, which is even admitted by the US Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton, who were sponsored by Saudi Arabia and trained by ISI, but as history have told us that US created them used them in the best of their Interest and staged a drama of abonding them , but actually that was even a scripted Drama of the US and Taliban , when US forces were welcomed in Afghanistan with out any resistance ,as US wanted to show his presence in this area, and now as it not worth it , and now they want to leave Afghanistan , now they are again trying to pose , that they are only in connection with mild or moderate Taliban, but the relationship of Taliban and US , has been quite evident now that they are working in each other’s interest and accommodating each other.

Some elements inside the UK and the US governments believe the scheme would pave the way for peace talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

There are reports of disputes, both in London and in Washington, between army commanders and their political masters on how to proceed with the war in the South Asian country and whether they should begin a substantial drawdown of troops from Afghanistan this year.

The politicians want to calm down the skeptical American and British public regarding putting an end to the unpopular war. But, the military are still concerned that a premature withdrawal would jeopardise the achievements.

This is while NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has recently announced the NATO mission in Afghanistan, which aimed at eradicating al-Qaeda in the war-torn country, as accomplished.

“It is of utmost importance that we stay the course as long as it takes to finish our job.” We have to ask, however, what is our job? Why did we commit the military to Afghanistan in the first place?” Rasmussen said.

“It was not to make Afghanistan democratic, nor to root out corruption, destroy the poppy trade or liberate Afghan women from the burqa. Each and all of these will take generations and cannot be delivered by soldiers or drone aircraft,” added the NATO Secretary General.

“No. our purpose was very simple. It was to eradicate al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and ensure that they would never again be able to use that country as a base. That objective has largely been achieved. Al-Qaeda has a minimal presence in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden is dead and much of his original organisation destroyed.”

“A substantial rundown of NATO troops from Afghanistan, leading to a withdrawal of combat troops by 2015 is, therefore, both sensible and justified,” according to Rasmussen.

Meanwhile, Britain and the United States are pressing the United Nations to lift sanctions on 18 top Taliban commanders to facilitate peace talks.

US diplomats have also held at least three face-to-face talks with a top Taliban spokesman in Germany and Qatar in the last two months.

“The time is now right to take the risk and pursue the political agenda with the same energy we have brought to the military and civilian surges,” said Mark Sedwill, a British diplomat and NATO’s senior civilian representative in Afghanistan.
