Palestinian female captive on hunger strike for the third day running

JNN 30.10.10 The Mandela Foundation that caters for Palestinian captives said that Lanan Abu Ghalma who is detained at Hasharon prison has started a hunger strike three days ago to protest the prison’s administration refusal to unite her with her sister Tagrid who is detained in another Israeli occupation jail.

The Mandela Foundation that caters for Palestinian captives said that Lanan Abu Ghalma who is detained at Hasharon prison has started a hunger strike three days ago to protest the prison’s administration refusal to unite her with her sister Tagrid who is detained in another Israeli occupation jail.

Head of the foundation, lawyer Buthaina Duqmaq, said in a statement on Friday that Nada Derbas, another Palestinian female captive, went on hunger strike in solidarity with Lanan.

Daqmaq further called on local and international human rights organisation to pressure the Israeli occupation to release the two sisters Lanan and Tagrid Abu Ghalma.

Lanan was arrested last April and placed under administrative detention and a heavy fine was imposed on her sister Tagrid on top of her detention.

Lanan was one of twenty Palestinian female captives freed in October 2009 in return for a two and a half minute video of Gilad Shalit in which he appeared to be fit and well both mentally and physically.

Israeli workers to go on general strike

Israeli public sector workers are set to go on a general strike next week, which will shut down all public services, including public transport.

“From next Tuesday we will embark on an open-ended public sector strike,” Israeli main trade union, the Histadrut labor federation, said on Thursday.

The union is demanding a 3.5 percent annual wage raise for all 750,000 public sector employees over three years, an almost 11 percent increase.

However, Head of the Finance Ministry’s Wage and Labor Agreements Department Ilan Levin has offered a 0.5 percent annual increase.

Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz and Ofer Eini, the chairman of the Histadrut labor federation, are scheduled to meet on Friday over the issue.

If the strike goes ahead, it would shut down all offices, companies, the seaports and airports, university administrations, and other public institutions.

The extent of the strike could also depend on the progress in the negotiations between the Histadrut and the treasury.

'Israel hogging Gaza water sources'

More than 1.5 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip lack access to basic humanitarian supplies such as shortage of water resources.

Many Palestinians are forced to purchase bottled water for their daily needs, as water coming from their taps has run dry, a Press TV correspondent reported on Thursday.

The Gaza aquifer is the only source of water for residents of Gaza. Reports show that 90 percent of its water is not suitable for human consumption due to high levels of nitrate and salinity.

In an interview with Press TV, public health coordinator Tracey Wise said, “Because of such limited amounts of water in Gaza that’s acceptable for human consumption, mostly this is the shallow, coastal aquifer, and this aquifer is being over-pumped, so much water is being taken out to supply the needs of Gazans, that you have much more intrusion of sea water.”

“And then also you have upwelling of this very, very old water that has high salinity and high concentrations of other pollutants,” she added.

Meanwhile, Israel has installed huge pumping stations all along the shared border, diverting water before it reaches the aquifer of Gaza.

Israel has imposed a blockade on the region since June 2007, preventing the entry of hundreds of items, including essential industrial materials needed to repair the water infrastructure.

During the Gaza war, bombs completely destroyed three water wells and much of the water system infrastructure in Gaza.

The Coastal Municipal Water Utility (CMWU) has reported Israel’s daily water consumption per capita at around 320 liters while the consumption of Palestinians in Gaza is less than 90 liters.

“We need to start to think about unconventional water sources, [such as] the sea, along with other solutions,” said CMWU Director Munzer Shuplaq.

According to recent statistics conducted by CMWU, residents of the coastal enclave will not find healthy water to drink by the year 2015.

Israel passes another discriminatory law

In another discriminatory move, an Israeli parliamentary committee has approved a bill which allows Israeli communities not to admit Palestinians.

The Knesset’s so-called Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved the second and third readings of a bill which allows communities having less than 500 people to appoint admissions boards capable of rejecting residents if they do not meet the criteria of “suitability to the community’s fundamental outlook.”

The proposal provoked anger among Israeli-Arab lawmakers, who said the bill paves the way for Jews to reject Palestinians from their communities.

Many Arab lawmakers described the bill as discriminatory and racist and walked out of the Knesset debate in protest.

“This law allows the establishment of Jewish communities that want to prevent Arab residents from entering. All of the bill’s stipulations exist only in the Jewish sector,” said lawmaker Taleb El-Sana from the United Arab List — Ta’al.

“As a sign of protest, we are leaving. We will not be a part of a debate on this racist and fascist law. This is disgraceful — you have crossed the line,” he added.

The bill, which was proposed 10 years ago, is due to be presented before the Knesset in the coming weeks.

Israeli troops burn Qur'an: Report

JNN 25.101.10 Israeli soldiers have reportedly burnt the Muslim holy book of Qur’an during an overnight attack on a Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank.

Sahar Beida said on Monday that she and her daughter had been confined in different rooms by Israeli soldiers who were there to arrest her husband Ismail.

“When I came out I was shocked to find our Qur’ans were on the front step and had been burned,” she told AFP.

“They took the Qur’ans from the house and burned them in the alley,” the 40-year-old mother added.

Charred pages from the holy book were shown to an AFP photographer who visited the Palestinian family’s home.

The Israeli military has not commented on the report so far.

Earlier this month, vandals in southern West Bank spray-painted graffiti on a mosque and set it ablaze along with several Qur’ans and prayer rugs.

This is while in September, the plan by US pastor Terry Jones to burn a pile of Qur’ans sparked international outrage and was condemned across the Muslim world.

More people killed in N Yemen clashes

JNN 22.07.10 Media reports say a score of people have been killed in north Yemen as fresh clashes break out between Houthi fighters and army-backed tribes in the troubled region.

“Violent clashes took place overnight between Houthis and Bin Aziz tribes… leaving 20 dead from both sides,” AFP quoted a Yemeni official as saying in Thursday.

Yemeni army forces deployed in the area intervened to break up the fighting, he added.

Contacted by Press TV, a Houthi spokesman, however, denied the death toll, saying only three Shia fighters were killed in the fighting.

He acknowledged that members of tribes loyal to the central government had been killed in clashes with the Houthis, but dismissed claims that the Shia fighters had ambushed them.

The spokesman blamed the recent clashes in the area on the Yemeni army, saying the Houthis first came under attack by government forces.

Last year, the northern Yemeni province of Sa’ada and and nearby areas were the scene of bloody clashes between Houthi fighters and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces.

The Houthis agreed to a truce after Saudi troops withdrew in early 2010.

Israel Preparing to Repeat the “Marmara” Scenario, Lebanon to Respond

Lebanon is preparing to explain its position at the UN Security Council inresponse to Israeli threats to prevent ships that could sail from Lebanese ports in an attempt to break the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Sunday.                                                                                                JNN: According to  Ahlul Bayt News Agency , Lebanon is preparing to explain its position at the UN Security Council in response to Israeli threats to prevent ships that could sail from Lebanese ports in an attempt to break the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Sunday.

The paper quoted an unnamed source as saying that Lebanon will reject Israeli accusations, especially after the letter sent by Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev on Friday to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Security Council members pointing to alleged links between the sponsors of a new Gaza-bound aid ship and Hezbollah.

This comes as some 50 Christian and Muslim Lebanese women as well as foreigners, who say they are not affiliated to any political party, are preparing to leave Lebanon on Sunday on board of the Lebanese aid ship Mariam. The first boat, Naji el-Ali, is set to leave Beirut with 25 European activists onboard, including parliament members and some 50 journalists, including humanitarian equipment. The ship, which will be loaded with medical supplies for cancer patients, would be the latest bid to break Israel’s four-year blockade of the territory. Julia, which has been docking at Tripoli port for about two months, is one of two ships to be used by Lebanese, Arab and foreign activists to carry aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat newspaper also quoted an official Lebanese source as saying that an Israeli attack on Lebanese citizens aboard a Gaza-bound aid ship in international waters will amount to an aggression on Lebanon. “Lebanon will not stand idle if Israel attacks Lebanese and foreign civilians in international waters as it did with the Turkish ship a few weeks ago, even though Lebanon is not sponsoring [the new aid ship to Gaza],” the source said, referring to the Israeli attack on an aid flotilla in May that left nine Turks dead.

The source added that Lebanese laws do not prohibit civilians from sailing from its ports. However, the source said that preparations by Lebanese, Arab and foreign activists and journalists to sail from Lebanese ports carrying aid to Gaza have not yet reached their final stage.

WOULD ISRAEL ATTACK LEBANESE BOATS?

Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai quoted a diplomatic source as saying that US Ambassador Michele Sison met with Prime Minister Saad Hariri two days ago to warn him about the actions Israel could take to prevent aid ships sailing from Lebanon to the Gaza Strip.

The report added that Hezbollah’s declaration that it had nothing to do with the aid missions from Lebanon to Gaza might not be sufficient to avert a possible sea confrontation.

The paper quoted  an unnamed Western diplomatic source as saying that the Lebanese government has not yet responded to mediation attempts to prevent the Mariam aid ship from sailing from Lebanon  to Gaza.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev on Friday urged Lebanon and the international community to prevent a small group of ships from trying to break the blockade of the Gaza strip, and warned that Tel Aviv has the right to utilize all necessary measures to stop the vessels, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

In a statement issued on Friday, Hezbollah said it will not take part in any Gaza-bound aid missions in order to deny Israel an excuse to attack the boats.

UNIFIL Director of Political and Civil Affairs Milos Strugar said that the UN force has not received any warning or request from Israel to prevent Lebanese ships from sailing to Gaza, As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reported. “The UNIFIL’s mission is confined to helping the Lebanese government at its request to prevent the transfer of unauthorized weapons to Lebanon by sea,” the paper quoted Strugar as saying. He added that the UN naval vessels’ activities were confined to this mission.

The Israeli daily Haaretz reported that since Wednesday, Israel has been exerting great diplomatic efforts on the international level to prevent the Lebanese government from launching the aid ships. It revealed that Israel had demanded from the Vatican to advise nuns against boarding the Mariam aid ship, seeing as tens of nuns have planned to be on the all-female ship. It also added that Israel had informed the U.N. and the Security Council that it intends to exercise its “right” in preventing the Lebanese ships from reaching Gaza.

Haaretz said that the Israeli navy and intelligence are preparing themselves for thwarting the arrival of the ships, with military sources stressing that ships coming from Lebanon and Iran will not be allowed to go near Gaza shores.

Hezbollah warns Israel over gas fields‎

With the illegal Zionist entity called Israel set to lay claim to natural gas fields recently discovered in the Mediterranean, Lebanon’s legendary anti-terrorist movement, Hezbollah, has warned Israel against extracting from Lebanon’s resources.

According to Press TV, Hezbollah’s Executive Council Chief Hashem Safieddin said on Saturday that the movement would not allow Israel to loot Lebanese gas resources.

The remarks come as earlier this week, Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri called for speedy action by the government to begin exploring its options in the newly discovered field off the northern port of Haifa.

Berri said “Israel is racing to make the case a fait accompli and was quick to present itself as an oil emirate, ignoring the fact that, according to the maps, the deposit extends into Lebanese waters.”

Lebanese PM meets eyyed Hassan Nasrallah

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri has met with Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah for the second time in less than a year.

The Lebanese premier’s office said in a Tuesday statement that Hariri conferred with Nasrallah about the latest domestic, regional and international developments.

The meeting, which was held in Beirut’s southern suburbs, was the second gathering of the two officials since Hariri became Lebanon’s prime minister in 2009.

The talks came after Hariri held meetings with US President Barack Obama and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in May.

Hariri is scheduled to travel to Cairo later on Tuesday, where he is set to meet top Egyptian officials. He is also expected to travel to Istanbul for talks with Turkish officials on Thursday.

The visit by the Lebanese premier to Turkey would come after the country lost several activists in a brutal attack by Israeli forces against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aid convoy on May 31.

Israel fails to assassinate Seyyed Hassan Nasarullah

Hezbullah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah stands as an indestructible intimidation; unshakable to the Zionist state Israel, though the Zionist regime in its war crimes and terrorist’s activities has martyred many of Hezbullah and Hamas leaders’.                                                                                              According to Abna.ir Ahlul Bayt News Agency & Lebanon’s website “Al-Nashra” wrote on behalf of a Russian sources, Israeli notorious terrorists agency Mossad has tried many a times to deduce the surrounding of Hezbullah’s Leader – Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah, to the extent that these terrorist emissaries came close to his whereabouts twice. But Hezbullah’s tactical defense impaired their heinous act and ruined their plans.According to the website, the Zionist leaders have confessed that they have failed number of times to assassinate the Secretary General of Lebanese Hezbullah. Al-Nashra, on account of Kuwaiti newspaper “Al-Jareeda” elaborated; recently Zionist State instructed its puppets in Beirut region Zahia to assassinate Hezbullah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasarullah but their conspiracy to assassinate Hezbullah leader was once against failed.Al-Nashra further writes that when Syed Hasan Nasrullah went to meet Syrian President Basharul Asad and Iranian President Mahmood Ahmedi Nijad in Syria for the second time, the Zionist State had intelligence of it. But the Seyyed Hassan with his high traits, faculty and valor defied the Zionists tactics and this attack of the illicit Zionist Government went in vain like any other.                                                                                                                                   In any case, Seyyed Hasan Nasrullah has become an inaccessible desire for Zionist state Israel, letting them eat dust, despite the fact that Israel has martyred many leaders of Hamas, Jejad-e-Islami and Hezbullah.

Once again, the Israeli enemy proves to be scared and perplexed… Israel in State of Alertness Because of… Imam Hussein Ensign! + PIC

While showing the peace activists its “muscles” and claiming to be the strongest ever, the Israeli enemy finds itself unable to “hide” its state of alertness and panic whenever there’s some activity in South Lebanon…

Thus, on Saturday, the Zionist entity was in a state of alertness and mobilization at the Lebanese-Palestinian border. Israeli soldiers were dispatching patrols while Zionist vehicles were moving all over the region separating the borders.

The Israeli state of alertness was, however, “justified”: Hezbollah was raising the ensign of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) in the southern town of Maroun Al-Rass.

From the highest point facing the Palestinian occupied territories, and specifically in Iran’s park in Maroun Al-Rass town, the town that played a major role in the Israeli defeat in 2006, a group of the Islamic Resistance members raised the flag coming from the holy city of Karabala in Iraq.

The ceremony, which was unprecedented in the southern town, also came in support with the Freedom Flotilla convoy en route to free and end the siege on Gaza.

Hezbollah official in South Lebanon Sheikh Nabil Qaouk spoke during the ceremony and stressed that the Resistance party will not allow that Palestine is left alone in the era of resistance’s victories, referring that betting on the US policies is misguiding a deceiving.

Sheikh Qaouk expressed belief that sixty-two years of occupation, and four years of blockade, is more than enough to reveal that betting on international community, international resolutions, and Arab conferences, is only an illusion. “The real bet is only on the resisting heroes in Maroun Al-Rass, Gaza, and all Palestine”, Sheikh Qaouk emphasized.

The Hezbollah official, meanwhile, said Turkey was today more Arabic than most of the Arab countries. “Gaza is tired of all speeches, conferences, international and Arab resolutions, and it misses the will of the free and the resistance and martyrs”, Sheikh Qaouk said.

According to Sheikh Qaouk, Hezbollah will always be in the lead of supporting Palestine and Gaza, “and whether they like it or not, Maroun Al Rass and Gaza will be the doors to liberation.”

Nasrollah: Imam Khomeini Revived Divine Values

The Secretary General of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Seyed Hassan Nasrollah, has noted that revival of divine and Islamic values has been the major accomplishments of the Founder of Islamic Republic of Iran, late Imam Khomeini (May his soul rest in peace).

According to Al-Alam News Network, in an address to the ceremony held to mark the 21st anniversary of departure of late Imam Khomeini, hosted by Iran’s Embassy to Beirut on Thursday, Nasrollah added that the late Imam brought about major achievements for mankind; the most important of which was the revival of divine, Islamic, and ethical values.

Nasrollah added that late Imam Khomeini (May his soul rest in peace), promoted the culture of Jihad and steadfastness against the despots and awakened freedom-seeking movements across the world, especially in the Middle East region.

Referring to the recent assault of the Zionist regime against the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, Nasrollah said that this attack once again proved that the Zionist regime of Israel, with the West’s unwavering support, is not committed to any of the international principles.

Martyrdom Anniversary of Shaheed Murtaza Motahhari

Every year the great Iranian Islamic thinker Morteza Motahhari is commemorated. This is done to appreciate his scientific and ideological efforts and it also expresses the Islamic world’s need to thinkers like him.

Martyr Motahhari was a perfect model for all Muslim thinkers. He was a wise man, pious philosopher, God seeking gnostic and a great writer. These good characteristics were quite clear in his works. The books of martyr Motahhari open the gates of knowledge, philosophy and various sciences for the seekers of knowledge.

Motahhari enjoyed two major characteristics; namely a deep and all-out cognizance of Islam and endeavor to express religion according to the requirements of time. He says: “Since I remember my spiritual developments, I was sort of concerned at the age of 13 and I was strangely sensitive towards the issues related to God and religion.”

In different works of professor Motahhari, his attention to man’s eternal bliss and an accurate cognizance of religion is noticeably visible. Through research, preaching and rational books, he has tried to introduce Islam as the loftiest copy of human living to the world. The Holy Quran always stresses in its cahpters and verses that religion brings a real life for mankind. Verse 24 of Surah Anfal says:

“O you who believe! Answer (the call of) Allah and His Apostle when he calls you to that which gives you life;”

Therefore positive response to the call of God and His Messengers is the source of life. Certainly whatever is the source of life will be ever- lasting and immortal.

According to professor Motahhari religion never dies; from his viewpoint the revival of religion requires its presence in human life. This presence is materialized by activating religion in man’s life and revitalizing its role in human deeds and thoughts.

Social phenomena should be in compliance with human needs so that they may continue to exist. Human needs consist of the natural and unnatural ones. Natural needs stem from the natural characteristics of mankind. For example human being is interested in scientific research or he likes beauty. His unnatural needs are a series of tendencies spring from habits. For instance majority of people are accustomed to have tea or to smoke. Since these are not natural, human being can give them up.

In the path of human progress, we have witnessed that as conditions alter many things change. For example once Thomas Edison invented electricity, candle and lamp were ceased to be used. For, electricity could well meet the human need for light.

But some things can never change. Religion is one of them.

According to Martyr Motahhari, religion is in accordance with human inherent and emotional needs. In terms of securing human needs, nothing can replace religion. The Holy Quran in verse 30 of Surah Rum expresses the inherent nature of religion saying:

“Then set your face upright for religion in the right state-the nature made by Allah in which He has made men; there is no altering of Allah’s creation; that is the right religion, but most people do not know”

Throughout centuries many things have been put forth about the causes behind the emergence of religion. Some believe that religion has its roots in human fear and ignorance, while some others are of the opinion that the reason for human tendency towards religion is his interest in order and justice. The maintainers of these theories believe that if knowledge develops, religion will gradually disappear. Nevertheless, despite the speedy progress of science, religion has not lost its role, but mankind has found out that religion is imperishable. German psychologist Karl Yung acknowledges the fact that religion is part of the things which exist in human nature and subconscious. American psychologist William James in his book entitled “Religion and Spirit” says it is true that the sources of many of our internal tendencies are natural and material affairs but most of them spring from Metaphysics. He adds: I always see a specific dignity and sincerity in religious matters. Human religious conditions enjoy certain characteristics which are not comparable with any state of mankind.

Elsewhere, professor Motahhari responds to the question as how can religion meet human needs. He says mankind is in need of religion both personally and socially. Therefore when the Russian author Lev Tolstoy was asked what belief is, he said belief is the very thing with which mankind lives. Faith is the asset of human life.

Martyr Motahhari also believes that religion is the stronghold of morality and law. He says today it has become clear that morality without religion has no firm basis.

All sacred values of the human society like justice, equality, humanity, altruism and sympathy could not be materialized without belief in religion. Alexis Carl referring to this fact says: “Brains have now made progress but unfortunately hearts are still weak. It is only the faith that can strengthen hearts.”

In addition to raising natural emotions within human beings, Islam is also coordinated with the real nature of mankind in terms of laws, regulations and teachings. With such an understanding of religion, the American writer Will Durant says in his book “The Lessons of History” that religion has one hundred lives. If everything dies once, it will die for ever but if religion dies one hundred times it will revive again. In this relation, professor Motahhari considers religion as a sun which always shines but what makes it stagnate and recess is that on one hand under the name of religion, superstitions, and illogical concepts enter people’s minds and on the other people’s reasonable needs are countered. Martyr Motahhari believes that if the truth of religion is revealed to people, then as the Holy Quran says people would enter God’s religion in groups.

Sayyed Nasrallah to Al-Rai: Israeli Project Nearing End

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah stressed the goal of the uproar over the alleged Scud Missiles transfer from Syria to Hezbollah “is to pressure Syria and Hezbollah and to prevent us as a resistance from defending ourselves.”

Sayyed Nasrallah was speaking during an interview with the Kuwaiti television Al-Rai on Thursday. “Their campaign has failed because Syria has denied the claim and Hezbollah traditionally does not comment on such issues,” Sayyed Nasrallah said.

His eminence asked about the implications of such campaigns on the Israelis on the moral and psychological levels. He added that “this is in our interest, and all those who support the resistance have become more reassured because we’ve said that we’ll defend ourselves and Lebanon and that we’ll strike their infrastructures if they target ours.”

Sayyed Nasrallah underlined that the resistance is capable of fulfilling its commitments to defend the country. “In July 2006 the resistance proved it possesses defensive capabilities and the enemy was stunned to see what had taken place because they did not expect to face a resistance of this kind. We will not allow them to target our cities. There are red lines and we’ll hit back and we are capable of it, however we do not discuss the nature of the weapons we’ll be using.”

The Hezbollah chief said the picture taken in Damascus (President Bashar Assad, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Sayyed Nasrallah) was enough to send a message that the circumstances in the region have changed. “I assure that any new Israeli war will be an adventure with uncalculated results for the Israeli side and will eventually change the face of this region…My brothers and I believe that this intimidation does not entail a war.”

On the assassination of Resistance commander martyr Imad Moghnieh, Sayyed Nasrallah said that vengeance for his death is a matter of time. “I can’t say that operations to avenge martyr Moghnieh’s death had taken place and failed and the Azabeijan issue is a different issue. I assure that the Islamic Resistance will not be lax in avenging him. We are engaged in a battle with the Israeli enemy and when our leaders get killed anywhere we will have the right to respond in the framework of the ongoing battle. Speaking of vengeance bares some tolerance in its meaning. If we sought after vengeance by killing Israeli tourists we would have been able to so easily but we do not look at the issue from this perspective. We know where to respond and when to respond and who to target. The Israelis know this and it is only a matter of time.”

Speaking about National Dialogue in Lebanon, Sayyed Nasrallah said that “our ally, General Michel Aoun threatened to withdraw from the dialogue to protest the attack on the arms of the resistance and its intentions.” He added: “General Aoun expressed resentment from this rhetoric. Hezbollah’s representative was very clear when he told the other camp that if they wanted to bring the issue to the media, there was no problem and if they wanted to tackle it around a round table there was no problem either. Some say that the arms of the resistance give Israel the pretext to wage war on Lebanon. We condemn this rhetoric because it contradicts the simplest axioms. We cannot accept giving legitimacy to an Israeli assault on Lebanon and our people. True, there is an historic difference that dates back to the establishment of the resistance. Some political powers never believed that Israel was an enemy, and this difference in ideologies was present even before I was born. The only way to resolve this difference is through a national dialogue. This is why we were the first to present our vision on this matter. Some groups have declared through written statements that they insist on raising the arms issue to establish that it is a controversial matter. The resistance has never had consensus in any country at any time and Lebanon is not a special case. The resistance in 1982 did not enjoy consensus as there were parties who were in the same camp with the Israelis fighting for them. “

Sayyed Nasrallah stressed the resistance in Lebanon was strong especially after the 2000 Israeli withdrawal from most of Lebanon and victory in the 2006 war with Israel. He added that the arms of the resistance were not and will not be used in Lebanon to change an internal political equation or to change the constitution. “The resistance won the war but we did not ask for power and we never sought after it. Everybody remember May 25, 2000 when I spoke in Bint Jbeil. I said that what we achieved was our obligation and we didn’t want anything in return. We called on the Lebanese army to have full reign in south Lebanon, we never asked for a constitutional amendment to change the sectarian distribution of powers in Lebanon…Our experience is enough evidence that Hezbollah’s ambitions is not based on sectarian interests, in fact it is founded on national interests and I admit that Lebanon cannot stay separated from the Palestinian cause.

Speaking about the May 7, 2008 incidents in Beirut, the Hezbollah chief explained that what happened was to reverse an unjust decision by then PM Fouad Saniora’s government that was aimed at the arms of the resistance, namely its communications network which played a major role in defeating Israeli in the 2006 war. “Some ex-March 14 figures admit that those decisions were a strategic mistake. That government attacked us and it sought to ignite sedition between the army and the resistance. We were not represented in the government. When the Arab delegation arrived in Beirut we told them that our only demands were to reverse the decisions and sit around the national dialogue table, nothing else. We did not set conditions on electing a new president or on giving Saniora another term as PM. Our arms were not and will not be use in Lebanon to change equations. Our arms are to defend Lebanon and the resistance, and we do not tolerate attacking our arms because our weapons are legitimate according to all standards.”

On the investigations committee probing the assassination of former PM martyr Rafiq Hariri, Sayyed Nasrallah warned that Hezbollah did not trust the panel. “We have evidence that lead us not to trust the panel as well as the tribunal itself. If the committee does not prove it is conducting a technical and serious investigation we will reconsider cooperating with it. Mohammed Zuhair Siddiq has made a couple of statements and for the first time he implicated Hezbollah cadres in the crime. Siddiq is a false witness who deluded the investigation panel and the whole world and his false testimony led to the detention of four generals, the death of dozens of Syrian workers in Lebanon, and could have led to war in the region. He is still at large and the spokeswoman of the tribunal says that the court has nothing to do with Siddiq. How come? We will formally ask the Lebanese government to arrest Siddiq wherever he was, whether in the UAE or in the Netherlands. We have to know who was behind him, who gave him passports, who provided shelter for him, and who has been funding him. We do not believe in making a balance between justice and stability in Lebanon.  We have to be convinced that this investigation is being conducted to learn the truth and to establish justice. “

His eminence added that “if Le French Figaro was right and after it the Kuwaiti Assiyasiyya and then the German Der Spiegel and now the French Le Monde, then there is no need for an investigation, because the bill of accusation is ready against Hezbollah. We refuse any accusation Hezbollah, be it the party as a whole or members of it. There is a Israeli Mossad agent who is sentenced to death who confessed of picking up Israeli handbags full of explosives and that he used to deliver them to certain locations. Were those explosives used in some attacks or not? There are threads that lead to Israel, but there is a trend to rule out Israel from the assassination of Hariri and this is an insult to the martyr.”

Addressing Kuwaitis, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed all plots to dominate this region and the Israeli project have failed and they are nearing their end. “The last draw is to incite sedition between Shiites and Sunnis. There are some Shiites and some Sunnis who are involved in this sedition plot and they know they are. This is why I call on all Muslims to realize the danger behind this project.

His eminence said that the verdicts in Egypt against the freedom fighters who were offering support to the resistance in the Gaza Strip are politicized and unfair.  He added that “when those brothers were arrested in Egypt, we stressed – and I’ve said this personally – that those are honest resistance fighters, not outlaws, criminals, and terrorists as the judge described them. They are honest people and their only crime is that they were supporting their brothers in Gaza and giving help to the legitimate Palestinian resistance which should be embraced by everybody. Those men were fulfilling their duty and everything beside this are mere fabrications to cover the measures that were taken against them.”

Sayyed Nasrallah addressed the detained resistance men and their families: “When you chose the path of backing the Palestinian people, you knew that you could be arrested or maybe killed as martyrs at any time. What you have gone through in Jail and the sentences that have been issued today is a badge of honor on your chests.”

The Hezbollah chief added: “For Arab and Muslim peoples to know that we get detained and jailed because we believe that Allah is our God and we only abide by His order to support our brothers in Palestine and Gaza is something to be very proud of. I don’t see in this any loss for any Arab depth. On the contrary, this confirms the credibility of our position and commitment to the Palestinian people. Of course, we seek more support to them, but even this much backing is costing us. Yet, this is all under Allah’s eyes and for His sake.”

He continued: “Of course the doors are not closed in Egypt, and we are surely not going to let those brothers in prison. We will follow up this case even if a sentence was issued, and we’ll seek to resolve the matter as we did in the past, through legal and judicial channels…This case is no longer a judicial matter, so perhaps the only available exits are political ones.” “We will seek, through political and diplomatic channels to resolve this issue, establish our brothers’ rights, and not letting them in prison,” he added.

At the end of the interview, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed “this current stage requires communication and dialogue between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. We should focus on common point, not on matters that leave us apart. We have so much in common and our interest is one. We are targets, particularly when we speak about plots and schemes seeking to plunder our riches and separate us.”

His eminence warned that “What is taking place in occupied Palestine is extremely dangerous and it threatens our nation,” suggesting that all Muslims gather around this common cause.

Four Palestinians killed in border tunnel

(CNN) — Four Palestinians were killed, and six were hurt by toxic fumes when Egyptian security forces blew up a tunnel in Rafah, Egypt, the Palestinian Interior Ministry said.

The Egyptians on Wednesday blew up a tunnel on their side of the border with Gaza, Palestinian officials said, but fumes and chemicals from the blast seeped into an adjacent tunnel where the Palestinians were working.

Hundreds of such smuggling tunnels crisscross the border between Egypt and Gaza, providing passage for everything from weapons to humanitarian aid to people. Egyptian and Israeli forces frequently target the tunnels. Egypt has recently begun construction of a steel wall along the border to block such tunnels.

BEIRUT: The Higher Shiite Islamic Council

BEIRUT: The Higher Shiite Islamic Council held its ordinary session on Tuesday and praised Lebanon’s stability but warned of Israeli violations.

The council’s meeting was headed by Sheikh Abdel-Amir Qabalan and it expressed its relief towards the current climate of political stability and agreement between the Lebanese.

However, it warned of Israel’s violations to Resolution 1701, saying Israel aimed at destroying civil peace. It added that the international community was biased concerning Resolution 1559.

The council then called for a positive development in Lebanon’s relation with Syria and asked the Lebanese to work together during the coming municipal elections.
