'Killed Iranian lecturer not politically involved'

The Iranian nuclear physics scientist who has been killed in a remote-controlled bomb attack in Tehran had not been involved in any political activities, an academic figure says.

“Professor Massoud Ali-Mohammadi … was a prominent international figure, but had not been involved in any political activities,” Head of the Science Complex of the University of Tehran Ali Moqari told Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.

He added that Ali-Mohammadi was a prominent professor in physics who had written several books.

Ali-Mohammadi, a lecturer at the Tehran University and a staunch supporter of the Islamic Revolution, was killed in booby-trapped motorbike blast in the Iranian capital on Tuesday.

The explosion took place near the professor’s home in Qeytariyeh neighborhood, in northern Tehran.

Moqari underlined that despite police investigations, the University of Tehran would also probe into the incident.

Press TV correspondent quoted security officials as saying that the equipment and system of the bomb used in the attack had been related to a number of foreign intelligence agencies, particularly Israel’s Mossad.

Tehran blast kills nuclear physics scientist

An Iranian nuclear physics scientist has been killed in a remote-controlled bomb attack in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Dr. Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, a lecturer at the Tehran University and a staunch supporter of the Islamic Revolution, was killed in booby-trapped motorbike blast on Tuesday.

The explosion took place near the professor’s home in Qeytariyeh neighborhood, in northern Tehran.

Iran’s police and security bodies are investigating the terrorist case to identify those behind it.

Press TV correspondent Amir Mehdi Kazemi, reporting from the scene of the assassination, quoted security officials as saying that the equipment and system of the bomb used in the attack had been related to a number of foreign intelligence agencies, particularly Israel’s Mossad.

Meanwhile, Tehran’s Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi confirmed the assassination of the university lecturer on Tuesday morning and said that he taught neutron nuclear physics at the University of Tehran.

“No suspect has been arrested yet,” he told the Iranian Students News Agency.

He added that Ali-Mohammadi was killed when a motorbike parked near his car exploded.

The terrorist attack came as Shahram Amiri, an Iranian nuclear scientist, went missing in the Saudi holy city of Medina while on a pilgrimage visit in June 2009.

In December, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said Tehran had information that authorities in Riyadh had delivered Amiri to the United States.

He added that Amiri is among eleven Iranian nationals held in detention in US prisons.

It seems the kidnap and assassination of Iranian scientists is on the agenda of the United States

42 Shiites injured as police break up religious processions in Indian Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India — At least 42 people were injured when police used tear gas and batons to break up religious processions of hundreds of people in the Indian section of Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

Seven police officers were among the injured in the clashes between government forces and mostly Shiite Muslims who gathered in Srinagar, the main city of Indian Kashmir. The marchers were marking the Muslim month of Muharram, a police officer said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Large public gatherings in Indian-controlled Kashmir have been banned since the eruption of an insurgency in 1989, but hundreds of marchers defied the ban in four separate processions from the central Lal Chowk district of Srinagar after praying in various mosques Saturday.

Scuffles erupted when police and paramilitary forces tried to stop the marchers. Police fired warning shots into the air and used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.

Saturday was the eighth day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic lunar calendar. Muharram is especially important for Shiites, who stage processions to mourn the 7th-century death of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussein.

The Himalayan region is split between India and Pakistan, and nearly a dozen rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for a merger with Pakistan, or for independence from Hindu-majority India. More than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the conflict.

Saudi warplanes hit Northern Yemen districts again

saudijet

Saudi fighter jets have launched another round of aerial bombardment of Shia Houthi positions in northern parts of Yemen along the border with the oil-rich kingdom.

According to a statement released by the fighters on Thursday, Saudi forces carried out 13 aerial raids on Jebel al-Madood as well as villages in close proximity to the border region in northern Yemen.

The statement added that Saudi forces fired some 1400 rockets against the rugged area.

The conflict in northern Yemen began in 2004 between Sana’a and Houthi fighters. It intensified in August 2009 when the Yemeni army launched Operation Scorched Earth in an attempt to crush the fighters in the northern province of Sa’ada.

Yemen claims the fighters are seeking to revive an imamate that was toppled in 1962.

The Houthis accuse the Yemeni government of violation of their civil rights, political, economic and religious marginalization as well as large-scale corruption.

Houthi fighters say that Riyadh has also been pounding their positions, and that Saudi forces strike Yemeni villages and indiscriminately target civilians. According to the fighters, Saudis use toxic materials, including white phosphorus bombs, against civilians in northern Yemen.

Saudi forces began fighting with Yemeni Shia resistance fighters, known as Huthis, and bombing their positions on November 4 after accusing the fighters of killing Saudi border guards.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that since 2004, up to 175,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Sa’ada and take refuge at overcrowded camps set up by the United Nations

“It is a new trend. Previously, vehicles were being used for such attacks but Karachi blast was carried out through a planted bomb, which was exploded through remote controlled device at a time when the Ashura procession was crossing the blast site,” he said.

SOUTH KOREA SAYS ATTACKERS USE IP ADDRESS IN 16 NATIONS

Sample ImageSouth Korea’s intelligence agency told lawmakers Friday that cyber attacks that caused a wave of Web site outages in the U.S. and South Korea used 86 IP addresses in 16 countries, amid suspicions North Korea was behind the effort. According to AP, a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, told reporters that the countries include South Korea, the United States, Japan and Guatemala.
He spoke after being briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), on preliminary investigations of the IP addresses – the Internet equivalent of a street address or phone number.
The assaults on Web sites in the U.S. and South Korea have been described as so-called denial of service attacks in which floods of computers try to connect to a single site at the same time, overwhelming the server.

BROWN: UK NOT TO UNILATERALLY CUT NUKES

Sample ImageBritish Prime Minister Gordon Brown says his country will not unilaterally reduce its nuclear weapon cache unless other countries engage in disarmament. According to Press TV, the British premier said in Italy on Thursday “Unilateral action by the United Kingdom would not be seen as the best way.”
Brown told journalists present at the G8 summit in the quake-stricken city of L’Aquila that his country will not negotiate its 160 strategic nuclear warheads, and Trident missiles capable of launch from nuclear submarines, should other countries continue their pursuit of nuclear weapons.
He stressed that London would not “revisit the decision to press ahead with a replacement for the Trident nuclear weapons system.”
The British premier added “What we need is collective action by the nuclear weapons powers to say that we are prepared to reduce our nuclear weapons, but we need assurances also that other countries will not proliferate them.”

ITALY PUTS EMPHASIS ON CONTINUATION OF NUCLEAR TALKS WITH IRAN

iran-euThe Italian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maurizio Massari has once again emphasized on continuation of negotiations with Iran. Throughout an interview with IRIB correspondent in the Italian city of L’Aquila on Thursday on the sidelines of G8 Summit, the Italian official referred to this Summit’s political statement in support for talks with Iran.

Meanwhile, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, following the issuance of G8 statement, head of the Zionist regime’s national security council, Uzi Arad, has criticized the absence of call for imposition of new sanctions against Iran, and emphasis of this statement on continuation of talks with Iranian officials, while confessing to humiliating failure of the Zionist regime’s policy vis-à-vis Iran’s nuclear issue.

Israel Assessment: Iran Could, But Won't Make Nuclear Bomb Within a Year

cea0ecb7-9577-4a54-afa0-eafbd903fd57_topBoth the US and Israel believe Iran has the technical capacity to build one nuclear bomb within a year if it decides to do so, but both countries also believe the chances that Teheran will indeed make that decision are slim, according to assessments made known to The Jerusalem Post.
The assessments come in the wake of comments made Sunday by US Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the effect that Iran could be as little as a year away from completing a nuclear bomb, while Mossad head Meir Dagan recently surprised many by saying Iran won’t have a nuclear weapon until 2014.

“I would be careful about all the declarations on this matter,” one senior government official who deals with the issue told the Post, adding that a decision by Teheran to go full throttle toward the building of a bomb was dependent on numerous different decisions the government would have to make, and which it had simply not yet made.

G-8 leaders gave Iran until late September to accept negotiations over its nuclear program.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the situation would be reviewed at a G-20 meeting of developed and developing countries in Pittsburgh on September 24, and that “if there is no progress by then, we will have to take decisions.”
A unilateral attack by Israel on Iran to thwart the Islamic republic’s nuclear ambitions would be an “absolute catastrophe,” Sarkozy said on Thursday after the G-8 summit in Italy.

From an Israeli perspective, the senior government official explained, the G-8 deadline included both positive and negative aspects.

On the positive side, there has been a degree of concern in Jerusalem since the events that followed the June elections in Iran that the international community would try to push back the timetable on the nuclear issue until the dust cleared in Teheran.

The G-8 statement, the official said, strengthened the sense in Jerusalem that the international community was sending a message that “time is of the essence,” and that international stocktaking of Iran’s position on the issue would take place regardless of Iran’s internal situation.

On the negative side of the ledger from an Israel perspective, however, was that the G-8 deadline was also a sign the international community was sill locked into “engagement” mode.

According to the senior government official, under the current timetable Iran had until September to give a decision on engagement. If the talks began, then by the end of the year – as Obama said in May during his meeting in Washington with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu – there would be a reassessment of the situation, and a determination whether to continue dialogue or take more serious sanctions.

Regarding the contradictory messages that came out of Washington this week as to whether the US was giving Israel a green light for military action, with Vice President Joe Biden implying that a green light was being given, and Obama categorically denying that, the official said that Obama has been consistent in speaking against an Israeli military action.

What needed to be explained, the official said, were Biden’s comments.
“Biden’s comments seem to have come out of the blue,” he said. “There has been no discussion with the US over the last few months about the possibility of an attack.”
The official said it was also not clear how the recent events on the ground in Iran would impact on the nuclear issue.

cyber7South Korea was on high alert Thursday for more cyber attacks amid suspicions that North Korea was behind a recent wave of Web site outages in the South and in the United States. marwaIran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hassan Qashqavi denounced the terrorist action of the German racist elements in martyring an Egyptian Muslim woman  inside a German courtroom. According to IRIB World Service, Marwa el-Sheribini, the 33-year old Egyptian woman last Wednesday was martyred by a German racist in a court in Dresden, Germany due to her commitment to Islamic Hijab.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Thursday described about the clear violation of human values and principles in the countries claiming human rights, saying that the foully killing of the Egyptian woman in front of the eyes of police in the safe place of the court represents the extent of insecurity and the expansion of the increasing resentment atmosphere toward the immigrants and religious minorities in Germany.
The Iranian diplomat stressed that in European cities, the people of the world are facing with horrible sufferings such as clear disrespect, terrorism, violating the values and traditions of other religions and cultures and as a result with the increasing wave of Islamophobia and xenophobia all of which are the result of the kind of attitude and dual goals along with political enmities.

France: 4 Pro-Israel Jews Attack Pro-Palestinian Bookshop

france-proFour youths connected to so called ‘Jewish Defense League’ were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a book store owned by a pro-Palestinian couple.
Some 300 people participated Wednesday evening in a show of support in front of the bookstore. The demonstrators called to dismantle the Jewish Defense League, whose members were allegedly involved in the attack on the store.

In the event that took place last weekend, five armed masked people broke into the store, smashed computers and set fire to books. The store owners accused the Jewish Defense League for carrying out the attack.
The fifth suspect has yet to be arrested.

“We saw here today for the first time solidarity of hundreds of people for the Palestinian nation, against the pro-Israeli French government. It seems as though the government here is starting to understand that we have power because today they also arrested some suspects,” Olivia and Nicolas Zamour, owners of the vandalized store said.

The couple added that beyond showing their solidarity, the demonstrators called to ban the JDL: “This is a fascist organization that does not hesitate to attack people and places. They have no fear because, until today, no steps have been taken against them. However, all of this is going to change. Three years ago, they attacked our bookstore in the middle of the night and broke windows. This time they did it in the middle of the day, fearlessly.”

Riyadh denies approval to allow Israeli planes to overfly its territory to strike Iran

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia denied Monday published news of the tacit approval to allow Israeli planes to overfly its territory if it is forced to strike Iran.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Osama transportation “Certainly it is not true. We do not have any form of relations with the Israelis.”

The newspaper “Sunday Times” reported the British Sunday thatSaudi Arabia has given tacit approval to the Israeli government on Israeli warplanes flying over its territory to strike Iran.

A diplomatic source told the newspaper that “The Saudis have given tacit consent to use the Israeli Air Force Egwaehm part of the task is in the interest of Israel and Saudi Arabia together.”

The Sunday Times that” The President of the Israeli intelligence service (Mossad) Meir Dagan told the Israeli prime minister said Saudi Arabia would tolerate for flights over its territory in the event of the Jewish state decided to launch a raid on Iranian nuclear facilities.

She explained that the head of the Mossad, held since 2002 for the regular secret meetings with the Saudis in this regard, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations between them.

For his part, the Saudi spokesman, denied outright a form of talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel, stressing that the two countries do not live any relationship, whether diplomatic, commercial or other.

Obama Wants Talks with Iran; Clinton Calls for Strict Sanctions

obama-and-iranUS President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that it was “very important” for the international community to pursue dialogue with Iran and North Korea “to persuade them to renounce nuclear weapons.”
Obama was speaking after talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Rome, ahead of the start of the Group of Eight summit in the town of L’Aquila.

“It is very important for the world community to speak to countries like Iran and North Korea and encourage them to take a path that does not result in a nuclear arms race in places like the Middle East,” Obama said.

But Obama’s Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seems to have another opinion…

In an interview late Tuesday, Clinton claimed that Washington would call for “even stricter” sanctions against Tehran if the Obama administration’s policy of engagement with Iran failed.

The United States will call for “even stricter sanctions on Iran to try to change the behavior of the regime,” Clinton said. Washington remained concerned about what she called Iran’s “pursuit of nuclear weapons,” which could “be very destabilizing in the Middle East and beyond,” Clinton told the private television network Globovision.

“We would ask the world to join us in imposing even stricter sanctions on Iran to try to change the behavior of the regime,” Clinton said in the interview, which was broadcast late Tuesday.

“We have seen in the last weeks that Iran has not respected its own democracy,” Clinton claimed in another interference in the Iranian affairs following the Presidential election that saw President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad return to power. “It has taken actions against his own citizens for peacefully protesting,” Clinton claimed, referring to street demonstrations challenging the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“I think it is not a very smart position to ally with a regime that is being rejected by so many of their own people,” Clinton said in the interview. The administration of President Barack Obama, Clinton added, thinks “it is not in the best interest” of the world to be doing business with Iran that would “promote the regime… that is not smart.”

BBC Caught In Mass Public Deception With Iran Propaganda

180609topThe BBC has again been caught engaging in mass public deception by using photographs of pro-Ahmadinejad rallies in Iran and claiming they represent anti-government protests in favor of Hossein Mousavi.

An image used by the L.A. Times on the front page of its website Tuesday showed Iranian President Ahmadinejad waving to a crowd of supporters at a public event.

In a story covering the election protests yesterday, the BBC News website used a closer shot of the same scene, but with Ahmadinejad cut out of the frame. The caption under the photograph read, ‘Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi again defied a ban on protests’.

The BBC photograph is clearly a similar shot of the same pro-Ahmadinejad rally featured in the L.A. Times image, yet the caption erroneously claims it represents anti-Ahmadinejad protesters.

See the screenshots below (click to enlarge).

BBC Caught In Mass Public Deception With Iran Propaganda SMALL iran protest rally lie2

“Well I guess it sure was a popular fictional rally for Mousavi, because I later noticed while browsing the news sites a familiar picture on the BBC’s lead Iran story – it shows the same crowd, zoomed in to cut out Ahmadinejad,” a reader told the WhatReallyHappened website. “It is clearly the same protest as in the background are the same tree and odd circular building. However, the BBC managed to outdo the LA times in quality reporting – their actual comment under the photo from the huge PRO-Ahmadinejad rally reads ‘Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi again defied a ban on protests’ – a blatant lie and deliberately misleading description of what is actually occurring in Iran!”

As soon as the truth about the misrepresented images surfaced on the WhatReallyHappened website yesterday, the BBC changed the photo caption on their original article. The caption now reads, ‘Tehran has seen mass demonstrations by all sides since the disputed election’.

This is not the first time the BBC has been caught red-handed using crude image and video framing techniques for the purposes of political propaganda.

BBC Caught In Mass Public Deception With Iran Propaganda 250509BANNER

During the fall of Baghdad in April 2003, the BBC and other mainstream news outlets broadcast closely framed footage of the “mass uprising” during which Iraqis, aided by U.S. troops, toppled the Saddam Hussein statue in Fardus Square.

The closely framed footage was used to imply that hundreds or thousands of Iraqis were involved in a Berlin Wall-style “historic” liberation, yet when wide angle shots were later published on the Internet, footage that was never broadcast on live television, the reality of the “mass uprising” became clear. The crowd around the statue was sparse and consisted mostly of U.S. troops and journalists. The BBC later had to admit that only “dozens” of Iraqis had participated in toppling the statue. The entire scene was a manufactured farce yet the propaganda technique of blocking wide-angle shots from being broadcast convinced the world that the event represented a triumphant and historic mass popular uprising on behalf of the Iraqi people.

Whatever your views on the legitimacy of Ahmadinejad and the accuracy of the Iranian election results, the fact that the Anglo-American establishment and its media organs are exploiting and fanning the flames of chaos in Iran to provoke further instability is unquestionable.

Indeed, the U.S. State Department, which routinely demonizes the Internet as a tool of extremists and terrorists when it is used to criticize U.S. foreign policy, took the unprecedented step today of requesting that Twitter.com “delay planned maintenance work so that Iranian protesters can continue to use it to post images and reports of unrest,” according to a London Times report.

Hamas: No One Knows Shalit's Fate Except Those Holding Him

hamasThe Palestinian Hamas Resistance movement on Wednesday said the fate of the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was known only to those holding him, one day after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said the soldier was “fine.”
Osama al-Muzaini, a senior Hamas official responsible for talks over the soldier’s release, said Mubarak’s remarks were “wishful thinking,” in a statement published by the Safa agency, a news service close to Hamas.

“No one knows if (Gilad) Shalit is alive or dead after the war except for the closed circle responsible for him,” Muzaini said, referring to the devastating Israeli offensive on Gaza at the turn of the year.

On Tuesday Mubarak told journalists in Cairo after he met Israeli President Shimon Peres that the Israeli conscript was in good health more than three years after his capture.

zcustomtm51American soldiers in Iraq’s Diyala province once again violated the U.S.-Iraqi security agreement by entering a city without prior coordination with the Iraqi government. “American soldiers entered Arab Jobour area and the villages of Sansal, Homais and Taiha, without any permission from related government offices,” al-Mashriq newspaper quoted a security source in the province as saying. American soldiers had also entered some towns of the province including Baladrouz, Kanaan, Miqdadiya and Wajihiya last week without prior authorization. According to the U.S.-Iraqi security agreement, American soldiers who withdrew from Iraqi cities on June 30th, are not allowed to enter Iraqi cities and towns without a prior permission from the Iraqi government.

HUNDREDS OF ARMED HAN CHINESE MARCH IN URUMQI

protest-china33Police fired tear gas Tuesday to try to restore order as hundreds of Han Chinese armed with clubs marched through the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, smashing shops and knocking over food stalls. According to AP, the city, where rioting and ethnic clashes killed 156 people two days ago, was extremely tense, with security officials breaking up a separate protest by the train station. Also, women faced off with armed Chinese police, wailing for the release of their sons and husbands detained after the riots.

Police used loudspeakers to appeal to the Han Chinese crowd to stop, but a group of about 300 protesters were joined by two other columns of marchers on Jiefang Nan Road.

OBAMA'S DIPLOMACY TO BE TESTED IN RUSSIA

obama-michUS President Barack Obama’s diplomacy is about to get a stern test in Russia, home of a wary public, a two-headed leadership and a lingering bit of hard feelings. According to AP, Obama arrives in Moscow on Monday for a full-scale two-day summit, the first of its kind since the early part of the George W. Bush presidency. He is sure to emerge with tangible signs of progress – including another step toward the world’s two largest nuclear powers reducing their arsenals.

But what much of the world will watch for are signs of Obama’s relationship with Russia’s two leaders, President Dmitry Medvedev and his mentor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
Both sides are talking of improving their ties and wanting to show some early results.

140 DEAD IN BLOODY RIOTS IN CHINA'S XINJIANG

protest-chinaAt least 140 people have been killed and more than 800 others injured as ethnic violence erupted in China’s restive Xinjiang region. According to Xinhua, a government spokesman confirmed on Monday that at least 140 people were killed, after hundreds of locals took to the streets of the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday evening — burning and smashing vehicles and confronting police and anti-riot troops.

Xinhua did not say how many people were involved or how many have been arrested, but AFP said that the confrontation involved around 3,000 Uighurs, and that at least 300 had been arrested.
The unrest had followed a protest against government handling of a clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in far southern China in late June, when two Uighurs died.
Police used electric cattle prods and fired gunshots into the air to try to quell the unrest. Three people from China’s majority Han Chinese ethnic group died in the attacks and an overnight curfew was declared.

Assad Won't Get Golan If Ties Kept with Iran, Hezbollah

1c0345e6-1489-40c1-94a1-8a7148330194_topIsraeli President Shimon Peres said on Monday that Syrian President Bashar Assad must understand that Israel would not hand over the occupied Golan Heights on a “silver platter” so long as Damascus continued its ties with Iran and Hezbollah.
Peres told visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier that a true “peace process” between the long time enemies would have to take place at the negotiating table, without preconditions or mediation. “Israel is ready to return to the negotiating table immediately, but without any pre-conditions,” Peres said when asked if he had a message for Steinmeier to relay to Assad.

Syrian officials last month threatened to take back the occupied Golan Heights by force if a peace agreement involving the return of the strategic plateau is not reached with Israel.

A group calling itself the Syrian Committee for the Freedom of the Golan said it would take steps to regain control of the territory, adding that Israel has not shown willingness to achieve peace or to return what they called “Syrian land.”

Just prior to that, Assad rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s offer to resume peace talks between the two countries from “point zero.”

Assad said the negotiations should resume from the point at which they stopped under former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, when the two sides had planned to formulate mutual commitments that would enable the talks to move to a direct negotiations stage.

German Foreign Minister Steinmeier began talks with Israeli leaders on Monday morning as part of a 40-hour trip to Tel Aviv, Damascus and Beirut.

Steinmeier landed in Tel Aviv before dawn and opened his talks by meeting Peres at his residence in occupied Jerusalem. He was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and opposition leader Tzipi Livni later in the day.

A planned stopover in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, which was to include an inaugural ceremony for some new, German-funded classrooms, was cancelled due to an unannounced, last-minute visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Jordan, a spokeswoman at the German representation in Ramallah confirmed.

A key aspect of the discussions with the Israeli government is expected to be U.S. and European Union calls for a halt to settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

German officials said Steinmeier also hopes to persuade neighboring Arab states to take a more active role in diplomatic efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The visit is Steinmeier’s 14th since taking office in 2005.

He is scheduled to meet Tuesday with President Bashar Assad in Syria and in Lebanon with prime minister-designate Saad Hariri.

North Korea Boasts of Military Strength after Missile Launches

north-koreaNorth Korea Sunday hailed the strength of its military after it launched a salvo of ballistic missiles in a show of firepower that earned international criticism. “Thanks to the army-first policy of our party, our defense industry… laid a firm foundation to produce any kind of (weapons) needed for modern warfare freely,” the ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said in a commentary.
The army-first policy of the communist country has given the military the capacity to hit enemies with a “merciless” strike, it added.

The comments from North Korea came a day after it test-fired seven ballistic missiles in an act of defiance apparently timed for the US Independence Day holiday.

The launches further fuelled regional tensions after Pyongyang’s nuclear test in May. Professor Kim Yong-Hyun of Seoul’s Dongguk University said the launches were designed to demonstrate the country’s improved missile capacity. “The weekend sabre-rattling, apparently designed to demonstrate the country’s improved missile capacity and military firepower, produced its intended effect,” he said.

It also sent a strong warning to the United States that North Korean missiles could pose a serious challenge to regional peace, he said. Washington’s relatively mild reaction showed US officials do not want “a catastrophic confrontation with North Korea or heightened regional tensions,” he added.

Saturday’s tests brought a new round of verbal condemnation from diplomats and politicians in neighboring countries, the U.S., France, Israel and Australia. China, North Korea’s closest ally and chief economic benefactor, urged “calm and restraint,” the lesser of the two types of criticisms its foreign ministry usually issues after North Korean provocations. The U.S. State Department urged North Korea to “refrain from actions that aggravate tensions and return to denuclearization talks.”

Defense analysts in several countries, including the U.S. and South Korea, will take several weeks to determine whether Saturday’s tests showed that North Korea is advancing its ability to carry nuclear warheads on those missiles.

Military and intelligence analysts in the U.S. and elsewhere several weeks ago tracked movement of long-range missiles to launchpads in North Korea and, for a time, prepared for the prospect that it would launch such a missile on July 4 or 5, as it did in 2006. Over the past two weeks, however, they detected no signs of further preparations for such a launch.

Japan Mulls New Missile Defense System to Counter Airborne Attacks

japan-probJapan is considering introducing a new type of missile defense system to counter airborne attacks, notably from North Korea, a local newspaper said Sunday.
Japan has two types of defense against airborne attacks – the warship-installed Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) and Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3), a surface-to-air missile that tracks and hits incoming targets. It plans to complete the shield by early 2011, deploying the PAC-3 missiles at 11 bases and setting up SM-3 missiles on several warships. But the two systems still will not be enough to cover the nation’s territory completely, the Mainichi daily said, without citing sources.

The Japanese defense ministry is considering introducing another surface-to-air missile, the US-developed Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in addition to SM-3 and PAC-3, the newspaper said.

While the PAC-3 has a range of about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles), a THAAD interceptor can cover more than 100 kilometers, making it possible to defend the entire nation if deployed at three to four bases, the report said.

Washington and Tokyo have been working jointly to install a shield against attacks from North Korea, which fired a missile over Japan’s main island in 1998 and tested an atom bomb in 2006.

Hariri after Meeting President Sleiman: Gov’t Formation Made in Lebanon

hariri-meetingLebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said the country’s next government is to be made in Lebanon adding that the protocol for forming Lebanon’s next cabinet is to be issued from Baabda palace. “Lebanon’s government is formed in Lebanon. The protocol for forming the next cabinet is to be issued from Baabda and any other talk is false,” Hariri said.
Following his meeting with President Michel Suleiman on Saturday at Baabda presidential palace, Hariri told reporters that he wants to have the best relations with Syria adding: “everything is good in its own time.”

On Saturday evening Hariri received at his residence in Qreitem Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and later Iranian ambassador to Lebanon Mohammed Reza Shibani, who told reporters “my country has an established and basic stance in strengthening the Lebanese line and working on firmly establishing Lebanese national unity among all sects and political parties in this society.”

With the full support of US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, “the March 14” parties pressured Hariri to refuse a proposal to visit Damascus, threatening him that in case he decides to visit it before finalizing the cabinet formation process, they will boycott the cabinet.

The Lebanese Forces bloc seems to be the main “sponsor” of this trend within the March 14 bloc, alongside the so-called “March 14 Christians,” including the Phalange party…

Geagea reiterated his full opposition to any visit made by Hariri to Damascus at the current stage. Speaking to Reuters, he warned that such visit would be a move with no tangible results. Even more, Geagea said that such visit would not lead only to nowhere, “but it would also cause negative and dangerous repercussions.”

MP NICOLAS TO AL-MANAR: MARCH 14 CHRISTIANS WANT LARGEST CABINET SHARE TO WEAKEN AOUN
Meanwhile, Change and Reform bloc MP Nabil Nicolas said on a Sunday interview with Al-Manar TV Channel that the Christian parties of the March 14 alliance “want the largest share in the cabinet in order to weaken Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun.”

He added, “Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri’s allies affirm that the cabinet is formed abroad, thus, any tensions between the countries working on the cabinet formation will negatively reflect on Lebanon.”

MP Nicolas said that Aoun “visited Syria to have normalized relations. We are not dependent on any dialogue.”

Nicolas also warned about Palestinian naturalization, saying “the world is only interested in Lebanon because it considers it as the appropriate country for Palestinian naturalization.”

Sunday Times Says Saudis to Let IAF Use Airspace for Iran Attack; Israel Denies

israel1“The Saudis are very concerned about an Iranian nuclear bomb, even more than the Israelis.” These words were quoted by a former head of research in Israeli intelligence as telling a British Newspaper Sunday Times.
Sunday Times has published a report in which it said that the Saudi Arabia would allow the Israeli Air Force jets to fly over the Arab kingdom in order to raid the Iranian nuclear sites adding that although there were no formal diplomatic relations, Mossad has maintained “working relations” with the Saudis, according to the report.

So the UK paper report said that Saudi Arabia has agreed to turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites, adding that Mossad Director Meir Dagan held secret talks with Saudi officials earlier this year to discuss the possibility, and has briefed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the matter.

“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israel Air Force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source was quoted in the newspaper as saying last week.

Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defense source confirmed to the Sunday Times that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis.

According to the report, recent riots in Iran following a presidential election and the instability in the country have underscored concerns among what it described as “moderate Sunni Arab states” that it may emerge as a belligerent nuclear power.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace.

Bolton, who talked to several Arab leaders during his visit, added that “none of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”

According to Bolton, Arab states would condemn a raid when they spoke at the UN but would be privately relieved to see “the threat of an Iranian bomb” removed.

The former American ambassador also referred to the Israeli strike on an alleged Syrian nuclear facility in 2007, adding that “to this day, the Israelis haven’t admitted the specifics but there’s one less nuclear facility in Syria . . .”

ISRAEL DENIES SAUDI ARABIA GAVE PERMISSION TO USE ITS AIRSPACE
Meanwhile, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied on Sunday the Sunday Times report saying Saudi Arabia gave Israel permission to fly over its airspace to attack Iran.

Israel Sends Subs through Suez Canal

israelThe Israeli Navy has returned to sailing through the Suez Canal, recently sending one of its advanced Dolphin-class submarines through the waterway to participate in naval maneuvers off the Eilat coast in the Red Sea, the Jerusalem Post has learned.
According to the daily, Israeli sources said the decision to allow navy vessels to sail through the canal was made recently and was a definite “change of policy” within the service. In 2005, then OC Navy Adm. David Ben-Bashat decided to stop sending Israeli ships through the canal due to growing “threats” in the area.

However, the Dolphin-class submarine sailed through last month to get from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. Israeli officials said it passed through the canal above water, and that it was not done covertly. “It is a question of policy,” a senior officer explained. “Navy vessels have sailed through the canal on several occasions recently.”

“The significance of the move was debatable, but it could be interpreted as a message to Iran and a demonstration of strengthening ties between Egypt and Israel,” the Post said.

In the event of a conflict with Iran, and if Israel decided to involve its three Dolphin-class submarines – which according to foreign reports can fire nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and serve as a second-strike platform – the quickest route would be to send them through the Suez Canal.
The only way to get to the Gulf of Oman without refueling would be to go through the canal. With their reported 4,500 nautical mile range, taking the long way, around Africa, would require the Dolphins to make at least two stops for refueling at a friendly port, or for fuel to be replenished at sea.

Hezbollah Can Hit Tel Aviv with 600 Rockets Daily, for 60 Days: Maariv

hizbullahCalm on the Lebanese Palestinian border does not necessarily involve good news for Israel, a report published by the Israeli daily Maariv said on Friday.

The report addresses the growing capacity of Hezbollah in Lebanon, three years after the 2006 war.

The journal emphasized that Hezbollah is tremendously magnifying its military capability and compiling new combative techniques in addition to a remarkable increase in the number of its fighters and trainers. The Maariv report pointed that Hezbollah is seeking to reach a level of capability that would enable it to launch a thousand rockets on “Israel” during a 60-day period of time.

Citing Israeli intelligence assessments, the Israeli daily also estimated that the party was close to reaching this level of capacity as it can today send between 500 and 600 rockets a day to Tel Aviv and surrounding areas.

The report added that unlike the rockets fired during the 2006 war, Hezbollah’s present rockets are mostly long-range and mid-range missiles and in case a new war breaks out, the daily said, the center of “Israel” will be targeted with salvos of such rockets.

Maariv’s report also said that Hezbollah has spread its rockets in a more complicated manner for Israel to figure out, as most of them are heavier caliber rockets, more precise and longer in range.

The number of trained fighters, the report says, has increased from 5000 to 8000 well trained fighters and that Hezbollah is building fortified garrisons and underground systems to serve an organized deployment of fighters and field commanders between north and south Litani River areas.
Maarvi described Hezbollah’s formations as a compact defense system that enjoys the ability of ‘reciprocal coverage’, artillery, anti-armor and intelligence capabilities in addition to the ability to deploy special unit forces.
In case a confrontation takes place, the report said, a self-martyrdom unit would be called in to break through the border line and conduct operation against Israeli forces inside occupied territories, including martyrdom operations.

Maariv concluded that Hezbollah assumes that in case of confrontation, the Israeli army will go for a large-scale ground assault. This is why, it said, Hezbollah is preparing itself for such a scenario with a defensive battle relying on the aforementioned formations and the party’s goal will be to continue firing rockets deep inside occupied territories for at least two months in a fatal pace, Maariv estimated.

Russia: Iran current developments, an internal affair

russRussian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko on Thursday said that his country is seriously opposed to imposing sanctions against Iran which he said runs counter to international rules and is quite unconstructive. Speaking to reporters in a press conference on Thursday, he said pursuing a sanction policy with regards to Iran’s developments would be unproductive and will exacerbate the situation. Referring to friendly ties between Moscow and Tehran, he said Russia is to broaden ties with Iran based on mutual cooperation and good-neighborly ties in all fields. The current affairs in Iran should be resolved through peaceful dialogues, he underlined. Russia believes that current developments in Iran is an internal affair which should be solved according to the country’s constitution, he said. Russia’s stance on Iran’s developments and its presidential election is quite clear and there will be no change in it, he pointed out.

US jobless rate hits 9.5 pc in June

jj-jamThe US economy shed 467,000 jobs in June and the country’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 per cent, the US Labour Department said Thursday. The monthly figures were worse than expected, after the US job slide had improved dramatically in May. The Labour Department revised May’s job loss to 322,000 from 345,000. Economists had predicted only 365,000 jobs would be cut in June, according to a Bloomberg News survey. The United States has now lost 6.5 million jobs since a recession began in December 2007 and the unemployment rate remains at its highest level in a quarter-century. Manufacturing and construction continued to be some of the worst hit industries. Health care remained one of the few growing sectors.

"US, Israel behind IRI vote-rigging rumors"

ejjjjj-hzIRI Intelligence Minister blamed America and the Zionist regime for the spread of rumors of vote-rigging among people.

“I announce that no organized rigging which could affect the result of the election has taken place,” Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei said in an interview with IRIB’s Channel Two on Sunday night.

He said the nation’s enemies conspired several months before the presidential elections to stir unrest in the country and dissuade the Iranians from voting.

“Americans and Zionists sought to destabilize Iran … they were upset with a stabilized and secure Iran … even months before the elections they started to talk about the possibility of vote-rigging in the elections and they continued the course following the vote,” Ejei said.

He said the IRI intelligence services were aware of America and the Zionist regime’s plots to mar the election months before the vote, adding that Iran foiled some assassination attempts masterminded by Washington and Tel Aviv.

June 12 polls was end of liberal democracy

nijabdPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that the June 12 presidential election in Iran which has promoted and strengthened the government was the end of liberal democracy and liberal thoughts. Addressing a national gathering of judicial officials, the President said, “the Iranian nation favors dialogue and wisdom as well as constructive and cultural interaction.” Referring to the recent interference in Iran’s internal affairs and insulting comments of certain Western states on Iran’s dealing with rioters after the 10th presidential election in the country, President Ahmadinejad said, “From now on, we will bring you to justice at any international meeting.” “How is it possible that those whose hands were stained with the blood of innocent people, are now talking about human rights and believe that they could damage Iran’s Islamic system and establishment with their hollow and satanic statements and with their propaganda against Iran’s clean and humane system?” President Ahmadinejad made the remarks commenting on the recent statements of US President Barack Obama about Iran’s riots following the country’s presidential election. President Obama had said on Friday that the way that Tehran has dealt with those involved in recent riots in the country was “outrageous.” President Ahmadinejad noted that IRI does not expect a few European countries (Germany, Britain and France) to follow a logical way but it expects US President Barak Obama to be more logical. “Americans say they wish to talk with Iran but then show such a conduct. They have no more thing to hide from other nations. They showed to the world that they have yet to change,” the President said, alluding to Obama’s main solgan of change. Stressing that Iran’s electoral system was one of the most popular, safest and cleanest in the world, the President termed the remarks made by his US counterpart as “far from international rules and norms and also impolite.” The president advised Western states to stop addressing the Iranian nation with impolite literature and correct their behavior.
