Iran to Launch More Advanced Research Reactor

Director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, has   reported on the design of a new reactor, more advanced than the Tehran University Medical Research Reactor, for production of radio-medicines in the near future.                                                                                                                                                     During the first conference on preparation and control of radio-medicines in Tehran, today, he added that Iran, among regional countries and the World of Islam, has higher scientific capabilities for production of radio-isotopes, given its 50-year experience in nuclear know-how and technology.

Salehi added that Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to ease the sales and exports of these medicines to regional and Islamic countries through the launching of numerous reactors in the north, south, east, and west of Iran.

He noted that the production of different radio-medicines increases day by day for nuclear medicine applications in Iran, and the impact of atomic energy on the industrial, agricultural, and medical sectors, is rising on a daily basis.

OIC members to review Israeli ties

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has renewed a call on its member states with Israeli ties to reconsider their relations with the Tel Aviv regime.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has renewed a call on its member states with Israeli ties to reconsider their relations with the Tel Aviv regime.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu made the call on Monday, saying the suggestion was one of the resolutions reached at the organization’s executive committee meeting last Sunday.

The meeting came after Israel launched a deadly attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy on May 31, which killed 20 people and left scores more injured.

The onslaught sparked an outrage across the world and prompted Muslim communities around the globe to demand action on the part of Arab and Muslim leaders, especially the Organization of Islamic Conference.

During its Sunday meeting, the OIC issued a statement condemning “in the strongest possible terms” Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla “an act of state terrorism.”

The OIC agreed to press Israel lift its crippling siege of Gaza. Other resolutions made were to convene a United Nations general assembly under the title of “United for Peace” and also to take necessary measures and sanctions against Israel.

“We are working to implement these resolutions. The OIC member countries are also in consultation,” Malaysian state-run Bernama news agency quoted the OIC chief as saying in Kuala Lumpur.

The OIC is the world’s largest Muslim grouping, several of whose 57 member countries — including Egypt, Jordan, Turkey — have diplomatic relations with Israel.

Blasphemous Danish Cartoonist burnt to death?

The editor of the Danish newspaper ‘Jyllands Posten’ was burnt to death when a fire mysteriously broke out in his bedroom, a Saudi newspaper claims.

According to the newspaper, the editor was sleeping in his bedroom when the fire ravaged his bedroom. He and his newspaper became controversial when it had published blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH).

The paper claims that the Danish government is trying to cover up the news of the death. He was hit by divine retribution, the paper added. Muslims, all over the world, strongly enounced this blasphemous act and massive protests were held in all Muslim countries.

Messages and emails that claim that the editor or the cartoonist has been burnt alive have also been circulating, lending support to this report. The paper named the editor as Elliot Back.

However, Back is merely a senior in Computer Science at Cornell University, who had published the caricatures on his website. Name of the culture editor of Jyllands Posten, who commissioned the caricatures, is Flemming Rose. Jens Julius is the name of one of the cartoonists that drew the images. There were 12 cartoonists in all, who according to the BBC have gone into hiding.

Bahraini Shia Muslims Under Severe Torture of Wahhabi Security Authorities

30 May 2010The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses it great concern for the continuous escalation pursued by the security authorities in Bahrain represented in the violence and bloodiness of the authorities in confronting the growing public protests that prevail the Bahraini villages and areas opposing the authority’s policy.

The BCHR received several complaints from sufferers and victims of this policy, the last which was the young Hasan Ali Darwish (20 years old) suffering severe injuries in the village of Karzakan, last Monday 17 May 2010, due to being shot by the Special Forces live ammo “shotgun” when he was leaving his grandmother’s house and heading towards his house.

The village of Karzakan had witnessed a protest demonstration that led to the intervention of the Special Forces which used live ammo to disperse the protestors. The shooting, which the youth faced, caused a punctured lung which led to internal bleeding.

The 12 splinters he faced have not yet been removed. The local newspapers published a news piece stating that the Public Prosecution ordered the imprisonment of the accused for 30 days in custody.

Two youth from the village of Malkiya suffered from injuries due to firing live ammo “shotgun”[ii][2] at them on Tuesday 13 April 2010, when the youth Abdullah Hasan (18 years old) and Sadiq Ali Abdullah (18 years old) where walking to the baker in the same area, and were startled by the firing of live ammo at them which led to scattered injuries on the bodies of the two youth.

Abdullah Hasan was injured with shotgun splinters on his hand, leg and chest, while Sadiq Ali was injured in the head and other parts of his body. When they turned to the hospital, the security forces were contacted and who interrogated them and kept them under security surveillance, then they were pulled out of hospital by force and taken to prison to face the charge of assembling.

The shotgun fires a bullet that explodes directly after firing it, only to offload dozens of solid balls that get scattered over a wide area in aim of hitting the largest number possible of targets, and this normally leads to the downfall of several wounded amidst the demonstrators.

These solid blocks penetrate the human skin and stop at the bone, and it is difficult to later extract those blocs from the body, as there are still dozens of Bahraini citizens whose bodies suffer from the remains of these metal blocs since the nineties.

It is also difficult to cure or remove these blocs due their small size, and there are many who got killed in the incidents of the nineties due to the indulgence in using this weapon which is intended at hunting small animals and birds.

In another case received by the BCHR which proved the excessive use of force by the Special Forces when dealing with the inhabitants of the Bahraini villages, two students from the Al-Jabriya Industrial School, and they are Mohammed Ammar Ahmed and Sayed Abbas Habib (17 year-olds), were arrested on 14 April.

The bus carrying the students back to their village was driving near the concentration of the Special Forces stationed at the village of Karzakan, and it was filled with the sounds of clapping and singing, which angered the Special Forces and pushed them stop the bus and beat everyone inside and arrest the earlier mentioned students without any legal justification.

Some of the Bahraini village and areas are being besieged with Special Forces for several months, and these forces and the civilian militias belonging to them of foreign individuals brought by the security apparatuses as mercenary forces from several tribes in Syria, Jordan, Yemen or the province of Balochistan in Pakistan.

These forces raid the residents of the Shiite villages and abuse them in a systematic manner, where the villages are stormed and live ammo, rubber bullets and tear gas is used, which leads to the injury of hundreds of people among them elders, women and children.

Several properties, houses and mosques are damaged. The mercenary forces are used to prevent the political seminars and to attack the peaceful protests and demonstrations. The Special Security Forces use armed civilian militias wearing, in some cases, black masks and attack the villages. The description “mercenary” can be applied to these Special Forces that are selected in a structured manner, and from certain countries; to be used security and military wise outside the usual framework of the security and military apparatuses of the country.

These “mercenaries” are granted materialistic and job privileges that the citizens working in the same unit and same jobs do not get. They are given housing, travel tickets and are thrown into political disagreements which they are not a part of, and they are trained in a special manner to raid the villages and humiliate the residents.

The votes of these mercenaries were also used, after actively granting them the Bahraini citizenship, to marginalize the parliamentary elections of 2006, which is a matter that is expected to be repeated in the coming elections. The BCHR believes that targeting the Shiite villages on a regular daily basis by using foreign forces from a Sunni sectarian background, aims at creating sedition between the people of the country of the two sects, and to deepen the differences and sectarian tensions.

This policy was met with utter rejection by the civil society institutions and human rights organizations in Bahrain. In a fourth incident that happened in Sitra area, north of the capital, a car carrying two youth who are Yousif Ahmed Hubail (28 years old) and Hasan Ahmed Hubail (21 years old) – the brothers of one of the wanted – was stopped by civilians in order to arrest them without knowing the reason behind that. When the two youth refused to obey these civilians due to them being unaware of their identities, the civilians severely beat the two youth.

It later turned out that these civilian forces had come to arrest their brother (Hubail), and who was not in the car they were driving.

Yousif Hubail and the Bruises Caused by Beating

On the same day, the two youth submitted a notification to the Sitra district police station; however they were surprised that the nature of categorizing this case changed from them being plaintiffs to defendants, on the charge of attacking security men while carrying out their official duty. The majority of the villages and areas of Bahrain witness rising public tensions, and semi-daily confrontations with the Special Forces.

The demands of the protestors are usually presented in stopping the systematic sectarian discrimination against the Shiite sect, whose pace increased since the arrival of the current King to the throne, and to stop the policy of the political naturalization in aim of changing the demography to manipulate the results of the elections, and to stop the continuous arrests of the people of these villages, and to end the established torture in the Bahraini prisons, and to stop bringing, funding and training foreign mercenary forces. Also, of the reasons for protests is the increase of poverty level among the citizens and the pervading corruption amidst the ruling class and the class surrounding it, and the authority being a party in inflaming sectarian disputes between the Shiites and Sunnis, and marginalizing the role of the Parliament and excelling in humiliating the loyal representatives of people in it.The Bahrain Center for Human Rights recommends:
1. Stop bringing firearms of all kinds, and to refrain from the use of excessive violence against the demonstrators;

2. Stop bringing and exploiting the non-Bahraini mercenaries with a sectarian agenda in the various security apparatuses.

3. Set up an independent commission of inquiry, to investigate the issue of using excessive force, and the illegal exploitation of foreigners, and to bring the ones responsible for it to trial;

4. Initiate an actual dialogue process with the pillars of society to resolve the crisis the country is going through, and to stop resorting to security solutions

Maliki-Allawi meet ends in agreement to set up national partnership govt

A one-hour meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and al-Iraqiya leader Iyad Allawi on Saturday ended in an agreement on the need to form a national partnership government encompassing all groups, an advisor for Maliki said.

“The meeting took place in a very positive atmosphere that would open the door for more dialogues and perhaps could give an impetus and lend more seriousness to them,” Ali al-Musawi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Meanwhile, Maysoon al-Damlouji, the spokeswoman for al-Iraqiya bloc, said the meeting, which took place at Maliki’s office today (June 12), witnessed talks on forming the next Iraqi government and helped “break the ice” between the two sides.

The talks were attended by Sheikh Khalid al-Attiya, Hassan al-Saneed, Khudeir al-Khuzaie, Tareq al-Hashimi, Mohammed Allawi and Hassan al-Alawi.

The meeting comes a couple of days before convening the first parliament session, expected on Monday, and two days after a meeting between a delegation from al-Iraqiya and a delegation from Maliki’s Dawlat al-Qanoon (State of Law).

United Nations accuses Israel of impeding its projects in Gaza

A report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of      Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) accused the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) of continuing to prevent necessary building materials for projects related to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip from being imported, pointing out that Israeli forces have only allowed 17% of building materials for two reconstruction projects to enter so far, preventing the projects from completion.

According to OCHA weekly report, Israel only allowed a total of 17 percent of the building materials necessary for the construction of housing units supervised by UNRWA in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

The report provided that the IOA allowed 20 tons of cement and four tons of steel bars to enter for the reconstruction of Al-Quds hospital project.

OCHA noted that last week Israel allowed a limited supply of materials which were previously restricted to enter.  A total of 98 shipments of timber, 47 shipments of aluminum, 240 shipments of clothing, and 134 shipments of shoes have entered Gaza since the beginning of last April.

Iran 'ready for dialogue with P5+1'

Iran’s nuclear point man says Tehran is still ready for dialogue with the P5+1, provided that they modify their preconditions.

According to Press TV, the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi told IRNA on Saturday that the P5+1 — the five self-imposed permanent members of UN Security Council plus Germany — are obstructing the talks aimed at ending the standoff over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Salehi said “We have repeatedly stated our readiness for dialogue, and it is they (the P5+1) who announce a new precondition each time.”

He added “This is while the Islamic Republic has declared that it will entertalks based on the two proposed packages.”

Salehi criticized the six for creating problems by “proposing a dialogue that only follows their own interpretations.”

The AEOI head also stressed that as Iran’s nuclear priority was security, membership in the Convention on Nuclear Safety would serve Iran’s national interests.

Iran, Pakistan Finalize Major Gas Deal

The project to implement a major gas deal between  Iran and Pakistan was finalized today in Tehran the  presence of Iran’s oil minister, Seyyed Massoud  Kazemi.

According to IRIB, the project planned in the 1990s  at an estimated cost of $4.5 billion is now going to    cost around $7 billion.

If the pipeline becomes operational, Pakistan is expected to receive 750 million cubic feet of gas daily for the next 25 years, with capacity of the pipeline set to be increased to one billion cubic meters per day.

The gas will be transferred from Iran’s South Pars Gas field in the Persian Gulf to Pakistan’s southern provinces of Baluchestan and Sindh.

Hezbollah warns Israel over gas fields‎

With the illegal Zionist entity called Israel set to lay claim to natural gas fields recently discovered in the Mediterranean, Lebanon’s legendary anti-terrorist movement, Hezbollah, has warned Israel against extracting from Lebanon’s resources.

According to Press TV, Hezbollah’s Executive Council Chief Hashem Safieddin said on Saturday that the movement would not allow Israel to loot Lebanese gas resources.

The remarks come as earlier this week, Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri called for speedy action by the government to begin exploring its options in the newly discovered field off the northern port of Haifa.

Berri said “Israel is racing to make the case a fait accompli and was quick to present itself as an oil emirate, ignoring the fact that, according to the maps, the deposit extends into Lebanese waters.”

Israel still paying for Dubai hit: Report

Nearly six months after the assassination of senior Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai, Israel continues to pay the toll for staging the incident.

The Haaretz reported Sunday that the Israel risks losing Poland, another close ally, over the extradition of Uri Brodsky, who is widely believed to be one of the Mossad spies allegedly involved in the January assassination.

Brodsky, who is an Israeli citizen, was arrested earlier this month in Poland’s capital city of Warsaw after revelations showed that he helped the Mossad hit squad to obtain forged German passports to assassinate al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room.

Germany has demanded that Brodsky be extradited, where he could be tried in a German court or even sent to Dubai for his suspected role in the assassination.

Brodsky has denied having connections with the high-profile assassination and says he is a businessman, but evidence show him being involved in logistics, providing paperwork, safe houses and other back-up for the 20-strong execution squad.

Israel, for its part, is pressuring Poland to refrain from handing Brodsky over to Germany — leaving Warsaw officials in an awkward position, in which they are torn between Tel Aviv’s demands and Berlin’s repeated calls for Brodsky’s extradition.

This is while Germany and Poland have an extradition agreement, both bilateral and through European treaties.

However, Polish officials have strived to keep the lid on Brodsky’s arrest, which was based on information provided by the Dubai and United Arab Emirates police and on an international arrest warrant issued in Germany via Interpol.

Once the story was out in the open on Saturday, the Poland played it down and based most of the reporting on Germany’s Der Spiegel report of the controversy.

According to the report, Britain and Australia’s expulsion of Mossad representatives show that Israel continues to suffer the diplomatic consequences of the Dubai hit, and indicates furthermore that the world has grown weary of Israeli actions and sees it as some sort of a neighborhood bully that disregards and violates international norms

Shia Men & Localities being Attacked by Sipah e Sahaba Terrorists

JNN 11.06.10 Tension grips Karachi City after the Rally of ASWJ ( SSP) ,who started there rally from the Water Pump area and were coming in a form of a procession towards the Sohrab Goth, But with having some other ulterior motives ,they  were chanting Anti Shia Slogans, and calling them infidels , which infuriated the Shia Youth who also came on the streets of their homes in the Incholi society,  but when this Procession  tried to enter Incholi Society area, Block 20 Federal  B ‘Area , One of the Shia Locality of Karachi. The Youth and the Residents who were present on the streets , they blocked the Road , so they could not enter the area, but when both the groups came face to face , The Participants of the rally fired several shots , which created panic , and to avert any Public Disaster the Police and Rangers , present at the scene , also fired several shots , and then fired tear gas to disperse the crowd , but the shelling was so heavy that several fired Tear gas shells fell into the house of the Shia Residents of the area. The participants of the rally were dispersed at that time , but later they came back with much better reinforcement and Equipped with Latest Automatic Weapons, and started heavy firing , and due to which S.Ali Raza Naqvi embraced Shahadat, who was Hit by a Bullet in the forehead , several others are also injured as the firing by the terrorist of SSP , continued till late in the Night.

And this is not the first incident which took place in Karachi in the recent past , Before this the same group have attacked the residents of Habib Bank Quarters ,Orangi town 11 ½ , in which shaheed Shahzad Hussain  embraced Shahdat, then In Korangi , about six hundred People under the flag of same SSP , came and attacked the Imam bargah e Wali e Asar, which resulted in Injuring 9 Shia Men , and all of them were first beaten , and have sustained bullet wounds, some of them are still under treatment in different Hospitals.

Within the last 7 – 10 Days it seems that the  terrorists have reorganized in Karachi and other parts of the country  , and they have designed some very dangerous plans for the days to come ,as there is a very high rate of Target Killing of Shia Men in Pakistan and especially Karachi, as about 5-6 shia men have already been Target Killed including 2 Doctors , and about 4 Shia Localities have also been attacked by the terrorists of Sipah e Sahaba, as they are trying to re surface , with other names like ASWJ (Ahle Sunnat Wal Jammat ) and other names , as Karachi was lately calm , and no such incidents were taking Place, as both the Major Partner in the Government of Sindh , codemn terrorism , and want to create Harmony between different sects and religions of the Residents of Sindh and especially Karachi, But the Terrorist groups like SSP , TTP , and Lashkar e Jhangve who have lost ground , and Public Support are again trying to destabilize the Sectarian harmony , which was coming back to the masses , as the Public have also come to know of the nefarious designs of these Organisations who are not only working against Pakistan , but also working for the interests of there Zionist Masters whether it be Americans or Israeli’s , which have even tarnished the image of Islam around the world , due to there evil doings , under the umberalla of Islam.

The Government should take some serious actions against these miscreants and terrorists ,as they want to disintegrate Pakistan, and to defame Islam upto the limit that even Muslims should be ashamed of revealing there Identity. It is there ulterior motive as they have Been Munafiq upto there roots

As till the filing of this report Police and other Law enforcement have not even aprehended even a single Killer of the Shia Men, which have embraced Shahadat in these recent Target Killing , or the attacks on Imam bargahs, which is a very tragic situation , as these terrorist are still roaming free , which may cause more damage to the society as well as our Beloved Pakistan. And as even if they are caught the cases against them which are filed by Police a number of  times , are being made with certain loophooles , so at times they are given the benefit of doubt by the Justice System of Pakistan. and are set free. To Kill and destroy more Humanity.

As the Ulterior Motives of these Terrorists  include the DisIntigration of Pakistan. JNN

Israel fails to assassinate Seyyed Hassan Nasarullah

Hezbullah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah stands as an indestructible intimidation; unshakable to the Zionist state Israel, though the Zionist regime in its war crimes and terrorist’s activities has martyred many of Hezbullah and Hamas leaders’.                                                                                              According to Abna.ir Ahlul Bayt News Agency & Lebanon’s website “Al-Nashra” wrote on behalf of a Russian sources, Israeli notorious terrorists agency Mossad has tried many a times to deduce the surrounding of Hezbullah’s Leader – Seyyed Hassan Nasrullah, to the extent that these terrorist emissaries came close to his whereabouts twice. But Hezbullah’s tactical defense impaired their heinous act and ruined their plans.According to the website, the Zionist leaders have confessed that they have failed number of times to assassinate the Secretary General of Lebanese Hezbullah. Al-Nashra, on account of Kuwaiti newspaper “Al-Jareeda” elaborated; recently Zionist State instructed its puppets in Beirut region Zahia to assassinate Hezbullah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasarullah but their conspiracy to assassinate Hezbullah leader was once against failed.Al-Nashra further writes that when Syed Hasan Nasrullah went to meet Syrian President Basharul Asad and Iranian President Mahmood Ahmedi Nijad in Syria for the second time, the Zionist State had intelligence of it. But the Seyyed Hassan with his high traits, faculty and valor defied the Zionists tactics and this attack of the illicit Zionist Government went in vain like any other.                                                                                                                                   In any case, Seyyed Hasan Nasrullah has become an inaccessible desire for Zionist state Israel, letting them eat dust, despite the fact that Israel has martyred many leaders of Hamas, Jejad-e-Islami and Hezbullah.

He referred to the Iranian nation’s unity and awareness and its unique devotion to the ideals of the Father of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace), and appreciated the unprecedented presence of people in the ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the passing away of the beloved leader.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei termed amiable cooperation between the Executive and Legislative Branches of the Iranian government as necessary.

He stressed that cooperation should yield results, since it is not acceptable that both sides claim they have done all the works, and it is for the other side to take the steps.

The Leader made it clear that no notion of defiance on the part of the Legislature should be shown towards the Executive, and there should be no reasons for delaying of work at the Majlis.

He also stressed that the Executive should act according to the laws and the Legislature should make sure in this regard.

Costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars

English Radio correspondent Mehdi Geramifard has interviewed Beau Grosscup, professor of international relations at California State University in Chico and author of the book: “Strategic Terror, the Politics and Ethics of Arial Bombardment.” The interview deals with costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars by the US administration which has passed 1 trillion dollars for the American taxpayers.

Crisis of the American Occupation of Iraq Monday, June 07, 2010

The confirmation of the results of Iraqi parliamentary elections and the continuation of talks to form new government in the country were among important news regarding Iraq during the past week.

Iraqi Premier Nouri Maliki early last week went to the holy city of Najaf and met and discussed with the most senior religious authority of Iraq Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani about the country’s domestic situation. The meeting was carried out in a situation where the Al-Iraqiya Coalition led by Ayad Allawi once again called for the foreign meddling in Iraqi domestic affairs.

A meeting with Maliki, the head of Supreme Iraqi Islamic Assembly Ammar Hakim and former premier Ibrahim Jafari was another event that attracted the attention of the media.

Maliki’s trip to Kurdistan shows the serious move by the State of Law Coalition for getting the viewpoints of Kurds and Shiites closer for forming the new government.

The sending of the first Iraqi ambassador to Kuwait after twenty years represents Baghdad’s determination for removing the differences.

The increase of terrorist attacks in Iraq following the release of several terrorists in US-controlled prisons without the agreement of Baghdad government discloses the US role in the recent violence in Iraq.

Iraqi Premier Nouri Maliki early last week met and discussed with Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani in the holy city of Najaf. The meeting was carried out while the head of Al-Iraqiya List Ayad Allawi a few days earlier in a meeting with Ayatollah Sistani had asked him to back the formation of the government by the Coalition. But Ayatollah Sistani had refused to do so. Many political observers believe that in view of the status of religious authority in Iraqi social life, the victorious groups in the elections are seeking to take advantage of the role of Ulema and religious authorities for resolving the political standoff in Iraq. Although Ayatollah Sistani has not so far supported any political group, he has stressed that the new government should be formed as soon as possible. At the same time, the Iraqi National Alliance has also reminded that the country should go out of the current standoff quickly.

The head of State of Law Coalition Nouri Maliki, the head of the Iraqi Suprme Islamic Assembly Ammar Hakim and the head of National Reformation Ibrahim Jafar last week met and discussed with eachother in Baghdad. Finding a solution to break the existing standoff in the talks concerning formation of the government was the main motivation of holding a meeting between the three officials. At present, Nouri Maleki, Ibrahim Jafari and Adel Abodlmahdi are among the choices of the Shiite coalitions for assuming the premier post. After the confirmation of the parliamentary elections results, the formation of government is the most urgent priority. Thus, the biggest parliamentary faction should immediately introduce the candidate for premier post. In view of this fact, it seems that the victorious coalitions in the lections will have busy days ahead.

As Mohamamd Hussien Bahrol-Ulum arrived in Kuwait as the first Iraqi ambassador after twenty years, Baghdad-Kuwait ties entered a new phase. The ties between Kuwait and Iraq came to halt when Iraq attacked Kuwait in 1990s. The event has had adverse impacts on the type of relations between the two countries insofar as despite the collapse of Saddam’s regime, there is still unfavorable atmosphere in the two countries’ ties. It seems that Iraq is going to take a high step in normalizing relations with Kuwait by sending its ambassador to the country. Assuring Kuwait that Iraq is no longer a threat to the country was another reason for sending Bahrol-Ulum as the first Iraqi ambassador to Kuwait after twenty years. However there are still some issues that can overshadow relations between Iraq and Kuwait. The debate over Kuwaiti debts from Iraq due to Iraq war against the country and the issue of the fate of Kuwaiti captives and the war missing are among the current problems between Iraq and Kuwait that should be solved.

The disclosure of the relation between the releasing of terrorists detained in the US-controlled jails with the recent insecurities in Iraq has left no doubt that the United States is behind the instability in Iraq. The spokesman for Baghdad Operation Headquarters Qassem Atta has said that 86 terrorists have been arrested during the past two months who have been kept in the US-controlled Buka prisons. The United States without informing Iraqi forces and intelligence agencies has released a large number of them. These terrorists most of whom have been Al-Qaeda members have been placed at the commanding level after release. Evidence shows that these terrorists were involved in the recent operations in different Iraqi cities. What is important is that the released terrorists have been trained in the US-controlled prisons. All of this shows that the US circles have relations with Al-Qaeda.

Although the Washington officials claim that they are fighting with terrorism and Al-Qaeda in Iraq, there are numerous documents and evidence showing that the US circles are financing and arming terrorist groups in Iraq.

US bombs martyred 55 Shia in Yemen

Amnesty International says the United States used cluster bombs on a cruise missile in Yemen, killing 55 people, most of whom were civilians

The attack, according to the rights group, targeted Al-Maajala in the Abyan province at a time when Washington was pushing hard to project militants in the country.

“Amnesty International is gravely concerned by evidence that cluster munitions appear to have been used in Yemen,” said Mike Lewis, the group’s arms control researcher, AFP reported.

The group cited a Yemeni parliamentary committee as reporting in February that the attack had killed 41 local residents, including 14 women and 21 children, in addition to 14 alleged militants.

Deputy Director of AI’s Middle East and North Africa Program, Philip Luther warned that “a military strike of this kind against alleged militants without an attempt to detain them is at the very least unlawful.”

“The fact that so many of the victims were actually women and children indicates that the attack was in fact grossly irresponsible, particularly given the likely use of cluster munitions,” he also said.

Lewis said, “Cluster munitions have indiscriminate effects and unexploded bomblets threaten lives and livelihoods for years afterwards.”

AI had obtained photographs which showed remains of the BGM-109D Tomahawk land-attack cruise missile. “This type of missile, launched from a warship or submarine, is designed to carry a payload of 166 cluster sub-munitions (bomblets) which each explode into over 200 sharp steel fragments that can cause injuries up to 150 meters (about 500 feet) away,” an AI statement said.

“An incendiary material inside the bomblet also spreads fragments of burning zirconium designed to set fire to nearby flammable objects,” it added.

Iranian President Demands End to Gaza siege

President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, denouncing the Zionist entity’s act of terrorist piracy on the high seas twice within a week against relief flotillas bound for besieged Gaza that were hijacked to Israeli ports, demanded the end of the blockade right away.

In an interview with ATV Channel of Turkey last night, he prayed for the souls of those who were brutally murdered on the first flotilla last week and wished for swift recovery for the injured.

The Iranian president called for dispatching of another aid flotilla to Gaza’s besieged 1.5 million Palestinians, saying he will discuss this matter with Turkish officials and officials of other friendly countries.

Asked on the repeated threats against the Islamic Republic by the Zionist entity, he reiterated Israel does not dare even to think about attacking Iran, in view of the fact that Zionist power compared to the might of Islamic Iran is like that of a mosquito in front of a lion.

Dr. Ahmadinejad referring to the trilateral Tehran Declaration on nuclear fuel swap inked on May 17 by Iran, Turkey, and Brazil, said this is based on peace and stability as well as on righteousness and justice.

He advised the US and its few West European accomplices to respect the joint measure by Iran, Turkey and Brazil which has global support.

The Iranian president made it clear that US President Barak Obama who had harped on changes in US policies, should accept realities and review Washington’s irrational approach toward Iran before it is too late, otherwise, it would mean the end of the Obama regime.

Emily plunged into darkness by Zionists tear gas canister + PIC

Emily Henochowicz, 21, an American Jewish art student lost an eye when she was hit by a tear gas canister fired by Israeli troops at a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

Emily Henochowicz, 21, of Maryland, was hit in the eye on Monday when she joined a protest at a Jerusalem roadblock against Israel’s deadly raid on an aid flotilla headed for the Gaza Strip, which killed nine people.

Spokesmen at Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital, where she underwent an operation, confirmed Tuesday that she lost an eye in the disturbance.

Henochowicz, a student at Cooper Union in New York who is currently studying at Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy, had participated in other nonviolent protests against Israel’s presence in the West Bank.

Iranian aid ships to set sail for Gaza

Two Iranian aid ships carrying humanitarian relief and medical supplies for the people of Gaza will set sail for the coastal sliver in the upcoming days.

Iran’s Red Crescent announced Monday that the cargo will include food, medicine and appliances and it will be accompanied by a group of Iranian doctors and relief workers.

“The aid consists of food and medical supplies, which will be transported into Gaza via the Rafah border in Egypt before the week is through,” the country’s Red Crescent Director Abdolraoof Adibzadeh said.

The Rafah border crossing is the only escape route from Gaza that does not lead to Israel.

“Iran is also preparing to dispatch a navy hospital ship for the people of Gaza, which will have onboard doctors, nurses and all the medical equipment required for emergency surgeries and procedures,” Adibzadeh further explained.

The decision comes in the wake of a deadly Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla carrying thousands of tons of aid supplies and hundreds of humanitarian activists to the coastal strip.

Israel’s military attack into the Turkish aid vessel M.V. Mavi Marmara resulted in the death of nine activists — including a Turkish teenager — and the injury of more then 40 others.

Israel kills 4 Palestinians off Gaza in foiled terror attack

The Israeli military said Monday it thwarted a terror attack when it fired on a group of Palestinians in diving gear at sea off Gaza.

The statement by the Israel Defense Forces did not offer additional details other than to say that no soldiers were hurt.

Hamas security forces said four Palestinians were killed and their bodies brought to a hospital. Search was under way to find a fifth body.

Al Aqsa — the armed wing of Fatah, Hamas’ rival — confirmed the men belonged to their organization and were on a suicide mission.

In northern Gaza, one man was injured in an Israeli air strike Monday morning, Palestinian officials said.

The “air force attacked a group of terrorists who were prepared to fire rockets into Israel in the northern Gaza strip,” said an Israel Defense Forces spokesman. “About 10 rockets and mortars were fired into Israel in the past several weeks.”

Israel said it holds Hamas, the Palestinian faction in control of Gaza, responsible for the rocket attacks into Israel.

OIC Chief Urges Prosecution of Israeli Officials

Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Sunday called for formation of a judicial committee to bring to justice the Zionist regime officials according to the international accepted laws.

According to IRNA, addressing an emergency meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers Executive Committee, Ihsanoglu said that Muslim countries are now in a position that can make important decision to curb Zionist regime’s aggressions.

He said contacts have been made with the Muslim heads of states in New York and Vienna to find ways to prosecute the Zionist ringleaders and draw up strategies to break siege of Gaza.

The Zionist regime of Israel has added another page to the lengthy record of its crimes against humanity.

Europe in the Past Week (65)

Tens of thousands marched in Lisbon in the past week against the government’s austerity measures, with the leader of Portugal’s top union vowing to intensify resistance but stopping short of calling a strike. The rally was the first outpouring of popular discontent after the government announced additional austerity measures such as tax hikes, pay and spending cuts on May 13. But the peaceful rally was a far cry from the tense, at times violent, atmosphere at protests in other austerity-afflicted European Union states, especially Greece. Portugal seeks to cut its budget deficit to 7.3 percent of gross domestic product this year from 2009’s high of 9.4 percent, and then gradually to 2.8 percent by 2013. The banners displayed at the rally urged further action.

Foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) talked on integration mechanisms and increasing cooperation in the economy, politics and security. The EU-ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting concluded with the signing of the Madrid Declaration, establishing future targets for bilateral cooperation and reviewing progress on the Nuremberg Action Plan, signed by both blocs in 2007, and the Pnom Penh Meeting in Cambodia, held in May 2009. Founded in 1967, ASEAN is a regional cooperation group that now covers a total population of 576 million. The EU is an economic and political union of 27 member countries that have a population of nearly half a billion. The 18th EU-ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Madrid focused on the financial and economic crisis as well as current disarmament efforts. The Europeans tried to outline the steps taken by the EU to stabilize the euro to their South-East Asian colleagues. This was now the eighteenth such meeting and the ministers convene every two years. ASEAN’s members are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

Spain’s governing Socialists won approval for a 15 billion euro austerity package by just one vote. The bill was approved by 169 votes in favor to 168 against, with 13 abstentions. The bill was only saved when 10 deputies from the center-right abstained after criticizing the bill, saying they did not want Spain to be plunged into a Greek-style crisis. The government’s plan aims to save an additional 15 billion euros and includes wage cuts of 5 percent for civil servants this year. Last week, the International Monetary Fund warned that Spain’s economy needs comprehensive reforms of its labour market and banking sector if it was to make headway on its own large debt and deficit problems. Spain’s unemployment rate has soared to 20 percent since the collapse of a property bubble at the end of 2008. At the end of 2009, more than 25 percent of Spanish workers were on temporary contracts compared to an average of 14 percent for the 27-nation European Union in 2008.

Queen Elizabeth II opened Parliament in the week that passed with centuries-old tradition, laying out the new coalition government’s plans to reduce Britain’s ballooning deficit and restore growth. The speech outlined the plans for the first coalition government since World War II.

The speech confirmed that the new government will introduce fixed, five-year parliamentary sessions, hold a referendum on making Britain’s voting system more proportional, and change the House of Lords from an appointed to an elected chamber. No date has been confirmed for the referendum on Britain’s voting system. The new government, which is the result of a pact between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats after the May 6 election, has drawn up a program focused on reviving the economy and rolling back restrictions on personal freedoms. Prime Minister David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, have formed a coalition government in Britain.

A senior minister in Britain’s new coalition government resigned this week after admitting that he claimed tens of thousands of pounds in taxpayers’ money to pay rent to his long-term partner. David Laws said he would step down immediately as Chief Treasury Secretary, a role he had occupied for less than a month. He will be replaced by fellow Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander. It was the first major setback to Prime Minister David Cameron’s coalition government, which had promised to crack down on politicians’ abuse of expense claims. Hundreds of lawmakers in the previous Parliament had used taxpayers’ money to fund everything from glamorous second homes to horse fertilizer. Five lawmakers have been charged with false accounting, and scores of others were either forced to resign or decided not to run for office again.

Laws, whose job was to implement the new government’s deficit reduction plan, apologized and said he would immediately pay back the money, which it was said to total 40,000 pounds. Laws claimed up to 950 pounds a month in taxpayer money between 2004 and 2007 to rent a room in two properties owned by his partner, James Lundie.

Amnesty International has accused the EU being weak and failing to protect human rights, citing the bloc’s tolerance of the CIA’s rendition flights and secret detention programme. The group said several European countries had repeatedly violated rulings by the European Court of Human Rights against the return of terror suspects to countries where they are at risk of torture. The human rights group’s annual global report, released this week, also noted clear accountability gaps in the EU’s foreign policy. It also cited the bloc’s weak and incoherent response to a UN report which found that the Zionist regime of Israel had committed war crimes in Gaza in 2009. Amnesty also accused the EU and the US of using their influence with the UN Security Council to shield Israel from accountability in Gaza. Meantime, the human rights organization took the US to task for President Barack Obama’s failure, despite promises, to close its prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

In the week that passed, there appeared another sort of tension between Russia and the United States. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow expects an explanation on the deployment of US Patriot missiles near the Polish-Russian border. The statement came after the United States opened a temporary military base near the northern Polish town of Morag, 80 kilometers from the Russian border under the Supplemental Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed in December 2009. Addressing Polish colleagues and US partners, the Russian official said they did not understand completely what the need was in taking steps of a military-technical nature to create some military facilities, an infrastructure in close proximity to Russian borders. Earlier, Polish Defense Minister Bogdan Klich welcomed the stationing of US Patriot complexes on Polish soil, describing it as an important step in strengthening Poland’s security. In September 2009, Obama postponed plans by the Bush administration to deploy missile-defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia has fiercely opposed the plans as a threat to its national security. US troops and Patriot missile batteries arrived in Poland this week, where they will be stationed in the northern town of Morag. The claimed training mission not only ties Poland more firmly to NATO, but also re-ignites Russian concerns over missile defense in the region.

Tribes vow to expel Mehsud militants

JNN 05.06.10 WANA: Members of a Pakistan Pashtun tribe vowed on Friday to raise a militia aimed at forcing militants loyal to Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud from their lands on the Afghan border.

Hakimullah is regarded as enemy number one of Pakistan as his militants have unleashed a wave of bomb and suicide attacks across the country in recent years.

The Pakistani army mounted a major offensive against them in their South Waziristan bastion in October.

Hakimullah comes from the Mehsud tribe, a major Pashtun tribe living in South Waziristan.

Though the military says it has destroyed most of the bases of Mehsud militants, Hakimullah and other leaders of the Pakistani Taliban have survived the offensive.

A large number of militants have fled to nearby regions while many fighters are also believed to have taken refuge in territories controlled by the Wazir tribe, the second major tribe in South Waziristan and the Mehsuds’ traditional rivals.

The government has been pressing the Wazir tribe to dislodge militants from its territory.

Elders from the Wazir tribe agreed to raise a traditional tribal militia, known as a “Lashkar,” to expel Mehsud militants from their areas.

“We promised to keep the peace and we will force militants to leave our areas within a week,” Wazir tribal elder Mohammad Ajmal told a gathering of around 400 tribal leaders in Wana, the main town of Waziristan. He spoke after a meeting with government authorities.

“We will not let anyone to ruin the peace in Wana,” he added.

More anti-Israel demos across the globe

Demonstrations are continuing across the globe, demanding that Israel be held accountable for the deadly attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla.

On Friday, around 7000 demonstrators took to the streets of Stockholm to protest against Israel’s act of aggression on the high seas.

In the southern French port city of Marseille, home to France’s largest community of North African origin, demonstrators called on the government to cut relations with Israel. They chanted a number of slogans, saying that Israel is a criminal country and France must cease its diplomatic, commercial, and other relations with Israel “which is behaving as a real pirate.”

The Committee for Solidarity with Palestine and Communist Party of India (Marxist) members held an anti-Israeli protest march in New Delhi.

In Rome, pro-Palestinian demonstrators called for a boycott of Israel.

Demonstrations were also held in Istanbul, Ankara, San Salvador, El Salvador, Iran, Malaysia, and Syria, where protesters burned the Israeli flag and called on the international community to take swift action against Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military attacked the Freedom Flotilla in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea early on May 31, killing at least 19 people on board the six ships, including eight Turkish citizens, and injuring about 50 others.

The fate of three other Freedom Flotilla activists is still unknown.

Israel also arrested nearly 700 activists from 42 countries on board the Freedom Flotilla, which was attempting to break the siege of Gaza in order to deliver 10,000 tons of humanitarian assistance to the long-suffering people of the territory.

The three-year Israeli blockade of Gaza has deprived the territories’ 1.5 million residents of food, fuel, and other necessities.

America’s largest Muslim group calls Obama to condemn Gaza Flotilla 'massacre'

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Tuesday urged President Barack Obama to condemn what the Muslim civil rights group called an Israeli “massacre” of civilians on a flotilla of ships in international waters seeking to bring humanitarian aid to the people of the Gaza Strip. Israeli commandos killed nine civilians in a pre-dawn raid on the flotilla.

“Israel’s attack on the flotilla has already been condemned by the international community,” CAIR’s statement reminded.

Reminding that a number of Americans, including former Ambassador Edward L. Peck, are among those taking part in the humanitarian aid effort and other passengers include 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, CAIR urged the US President to immediately condemn the incident.

“It is imperative that President Obama not only speak out strongly against this massacre of civilians but also demonstrate our nation’s outrage at Israel’s brutal actions by taking concrete steps to end the humanitarian siege imposed on Gaza with America’s support,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Our nation must now work to end the inhumane and illegal siege on Gaza.”

Awad also urged the president to live up to his statement one year ago in Cairo in which he said that America will not turn its back on “the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity and a state of their own.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

World Shia Leader: West to blame for Gaza aid raid

World Shia Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the United States, Britain and France must be held accountable for an Israeli attack on a Gaza-bound aid convoy.Imam Khamenei, in his message, condemned the Israeli attack on peace flotilla which was carrying aid for the people in the Gaza Strip on Monday.
Today, the issue of Palestine is neither an Arabic nor an Islamic one, but it is an issue pertaining to the contemporary world.

Imam Khamenei reiterated that supporters of the Zionist regime, particularly the US, Britain and France must be held accountable for the aid convoy attack.

“By such a move, the Tel Aviv regime proved that the Zionism is a new and harsher version of Fascism supported and assisted by the so-called advocates of democracy and human rights particularly Washington,” Imam Khamenei emphasized.

The US, Britain, France and other European states that have politically, economically and militarily assisted the criminal Zionists must be seriously held accountable for the atrocities of the occupying regime, World Shia Leader said.

Imam Khamenei also denounced occupation of the Palestinian territories by a criminal, impudent and insane regime which has imposed an economic blockade on 1.5 million men, women and children in the Gaza Strip depriving them of food and necessary medicines for the past three years.

The Arab governments are faced with a difficult test, he said, urging the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Arab League not to be satisfied with less than lifting the Gaza siege.

Imam Khamenei further stressed that invasion of Palestinian lands in the West Bank should be stopped and war criminals such as Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak be put on trial.

“The combatant Palestinian nation and the people and popular government of Gaza should know that their enemy is currently weaker and more vulnerable than any other time,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Zionists’ Monday attack on the aid convoy, like the invasion of Lebanon and Gaza in the past years, would bring the Tel Aviv regime closer to its end, World Shia Leader stated.

According to media reports, early Monday morning in international waters, Israeli forces intercepted and took control of the six-ship aid convoy, which was carrying 10,000 tons of aid and hundreds of activists from several countries. At least 20 people were killed in serious violence on one or more of the vessels.

President Ahmadinejad Slams Israel's State Terrorism

The Islamic Republic of Iran has strongly denounced the fresh act of state piracy and terrorism by the illegal Zionist entity that resulted in the killing of scores of relief personnel Monday morning and hijacking of the 6-ship aid flotilla to Israel ports.

The flotilla is carrying 10,000 tons of relief aid for Gaza’s besieged 1.5 million Palestinian people, and was attacked and hijacked by the Zionists in international waters some 150 km from Gaza.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his remarks today said the Zionist attack on the Freedom Flotilla was not any flexing of military muscle, as some might misconstrue, but an obvious sign of weakness of the fast disintegrating entity called Israel.

He said Israel was “planted on Palestinian soil with the aim of dominating not just the Middle East but also the entire world.”

Dr. Ahmadinejad calling for international efforts to salvage the Zionist-usurped nation of Palestine, said: “Support for the people of Palestine means support for peace and freedom of every nation.”

Palestinian Premier Salutes "Martyrs of Palestinian Cause"

Palestine’s democratically elected Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh today strongly denounced the Zionist attack on the flotilla and the killing of scores of relief personnel, urging the international community to protect the aid mission.

The convoy made up of six ships carries 10,000 tons of supplies and hundreds of politicians, activists and journalists.

Haniyeh added: “We consider all those killed as martyrs for the cause of Palestine and martyrs of the siege on Gaza.”

He called on the Arab world to wake up to realities about the Zionist entity, and advised the so-called Palestinian Authority to end all its compromising talks with Israel.

Iran Strongly Condemns Israeli Attack on Freedom Convoy

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday, strongly condemning the Zionist regime’s crime and attack against Palestine Freedom Flotilla terming it a clear example of terrorism on the high seas (international waters).

The foreign ministry statement said Israel’s raid on an international convoy carrying humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza unveiled the real criminal and warmongering nature of the Zionist regime.

It further reminded that the Zionist regime committed the crime while its attack on the Gaza Strip which incurred the death of nearly 5,000 innocent Palestinian kids, women and men and its use of banned arms and ammunition was still fresh in the minds of the peoples of the world, and while the illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip which is against all international norms and standards is still continuing.

The statement added: “The Zionist regime’s attack on ships and its passengers resembles the actions of sea pirates in previous centuries and according to the International Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, this move is a clear instance of maritime terrorism.”

Tehran called on the UN Security Council and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to hold emergency sessions and take swift action against the Zionist regime for attacking Gaza aid convoy.

Israeli commandos stormed an aid convoy sailing to the Gaza Strip in international waters more than 150km off the coast of Gaza early Monday morning, killing 20 human rights activists and injuring 50 more. The Freedom Flotilla, carried humanitarian aid, and was intended for the besieged and oppressed Palestinian people of the Gaza Strip, who lack even the most basic items for living.

Anti-Iran sanctions won't work: Powell

A former US secretary of state has acknowledged that sanctions against Iran are a nonstarter, adding that Iranians will find a way around them.

According to Press TV, in an exclusive interview on ABC’s ‘This Week’ program, Colin Powell said he doesn’t think the newly-proposed UN sanctions regime against Iran will work.

He said: “The Iranians have been around for thousands of years trading and selling and getting around various constraints and whatnot.”

Powell added: And I’m sure that the Iranians have done their own planning and have their own counter-sanctions strategy.

Most people want 'US nukes dismantled'

An opinion poll suggests that the international community should force the US to accept Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposal for dismantling its nukes.

Nearly 53 percent of respondents to the Press TV poll held that the international community should step up pressure on the Obama administration to dismantle its nukes.

Some 38 percent of the respondents said that this feat is impossible because the US would never agree to Ahmadinejad’s proposal. Only seven percent believed that the US has the right to possess nukes.

At the 2010 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at the UN headquarters in New York, Iran’s president called for the dismantling of all atomic weapons, starting with those in the possession of the US and its allies.

The Iranian president said the United Sates, despite being a signatory to the NPT, is the “main suspect” responsible for the stockpiling, spread and the threatening of other nations with nuclear weapons.

Maliki discusses new gov't with Grand Ayatollah Sistani

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki met with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in the holy city of Najaf Saturday to discuss the political process and the formation of a new government   Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki met with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in the holy city of Najaf Saturday to discuss the political process and the formation of a new government.

“Sistani called for positive interaction between political parties to form a government including embrace all Iraqis and abide by the constitution,” al-Maliki told reporters after their meeting.

The results of the March 7 elections showed al-Maliki’s State of Law coalition coming in second place with 89 seats after the Iraqiya List, led by former prime minister Iyad Allawi, which got 91 seats in the 325-member parliament.

Ayatollah Sistani “does not interfere in the Federal Court’s decision on which is the biggest bloc, and as far as I know and understand al-Sistani he will not interfere in such issues,” al-Maliki added.

As the results have not been ratified by the Federal Court yet, and no bloc has patched together a large enough coalition to form a government on its own, Allawi insists he has the right to form a new government because his party won the highest number of seats.

However, al-Maliki said he has the right to form the government after his recent alliance with the Iraqi National list, that formed the largest faction in parliament with 159 deputies.

Yet, that number is still four seats short of a working majority, and both sides cannot agree on who will head the government.

Pakistan, Iran sign gas pipeline accord

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran signed on Friday an agreement for supply of gas from Iran through the $7.5 billion pipeline project to be completed by the end of 2014. The cost for the Pakistan section of the project is estimated at $1.65 billion.

The ‘sovereign guarantee’ agreement was signed by S.R. Kasaezadeh, Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company, and Irshad Kaleemi, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources. Petroleum Minister Naveed Qamar and Secretary Kamran Lashari attended the signing ceremony.

Under the gas sale and purchase agreement (GSPA), Pakistan will import 750 million cubic feet a day (mmcfd) with a provision to increase it to one billion cubic feet a day (bcfd).

The volume of imported gas will be about 20 per cent of Pakistan’s current gas production and the agreement is for a period of 25 years, renewable for another five years. The gas will be provided to the power sector to generate about 5,000 megawatts of electricity.

As a part of the conditions precedent (CPs) to be completed by the parties to make the agreement effective, the government of Pakistan is providing a ‘performance guarantee’ on behalf of the InterState Gas Company.

Since all other CPs of the agreement have been completed, the project is ready to enter the implementation phase.

The petroleum minister said that construction of the pipeline would create jobs, provide vocational training and develop backward areas of Balochistan and Sindh.

“The IP project will be another testimony of the long historic and cordial relations between Pakistan and Iran,” Mr Qamar said.

Japanese Minister fired over US airbase

JNN 29.05.10 The Japanese premier fires a minister for rejecting Tokyo’s recent compromise with Washington on a controversial US air base on Okinawa Island.

Japan’s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama dismissed consumer affairs minister Mizuho Fukushima, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Tokyo and Washington have issued a statement, saying that the Futenma air station in the southern island of Okinawa would be relocated to a new site on the same island.

Fukushima told a press conference that she “could not betray the people of Okinawa,” Press TV’s Michael Penn reported. The former minister added that she “could not accept the plan to create a new US airbase on the island which would increase the burden for Okinawan people.”

Fukushima said that politics demanded trust and that if she betrayed her campaign promises to the people, she would be breaking that trust.

Hatoyama had run for premier on a campaign to materialize a “more equal” relationship with Washington. He had also promised to move the base off the island which houses three-quarters of the thousands-strong Japan-based US military.

Locals there have for long protested the presence of the military personnel who are allegedly involved in crime, pollution, noise and accidents.

Fukushima had stood up to Hatoyama’s and other Cabinet ministers’ plea for her to endorse the agreement.

Her party, the Social Democratic Party of Japan, could, meanwhile, leave Hatoyama’s coalition, jeopardizing her chances in the Upper House election set to be held in July.

Berlin bars Muslim boy from prayers

JNN 28.05.10 A German court has rejected a legal bid by a 16-year-old Muslim student to have the right to conduct prayers at his school, reports say.

The court in Berlin ruled on Thursday against Yunis’ bid to pray, stating that it would upset peace in the school, and abuse students’ rights to the entitlement of a calm and educational environment, Reuters reported.

The maintenance of an academic school environment takes precedence over the student’s right to religious observance, the appeals court said.

“The Islamic prayer ritual has a demonstrative character and serves as social control,” a Berlin Senate official said in favor of the ruling.

“This is a good day for the Berlin school,” school director Brigitte Burchardt said after the verdict.

She said the decision would reduce potential conflict that may arise in the school.

Last year the same pupil had initially been given the right to pray once a day in the same school. This year a higher Berlin court overturned that judgment.

With Germany holding more than four million Muslims, such a ruling imposes a heavy burden on the country’s Islamic prayer conducting community,

Terrorists target Lahore’s Ahmadi worshippers; 70 dead

JNN 28.05.10 LAHORE: Gunmen attacked worshippers from the Ahmadi community in two worship places of Lahore on Friday, taking hostages and killing at least 70 people, officials said.

The gunmen opened fire shortly after Friday prayers and threw what could have been grenades at two Ahmadi worship places in residential neighbourhoods in Pakistan’s cultural capital.

Sajjad Bhutta, deputy commissioner of Lahore, said at least 70 people had been killed in the twin attacks on worship places in Garhi Shahu and Model Town. A total of 78 were injured.

The death toll at Garhi Shahu was higher, Bhutta said, because three attackers blew themselves up with suicide vests packed with explosives when police tried to enter the building.

Police are still searching the area as two attackers were still at large.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the attacks, expressing “deep sorrow and grief over the loss of precious lives”.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the incidents would generate greater resolve to combat extremism.

“It’s a reminder to the nation that Pakistan will achieve its destiny only after we get rid of the worst type of extremism and fundamentalism,” he told a news conference. “The entire nation will fight this evil.”

He said one attacker had been arrested. Police in Model Town confirmed one gunmen had been arrested and another killed.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion quickly fell on the Pakistani Taliban.

“It’s too early to say who is behind these attacks,” said a Lahore-based security official. “But my guess is that like most other attacks, there would be some link to the Taliban or their associated militants.”

Punjab’s Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the arrested attacker was a teenage Pashtun. This, he said, indicated a link to the tribal area of Waziristan and strongly hinted at a Taliban link.

“The prayer leader was giving a sermon when we heard firing and blasts. Everybody stood up and then two gunmen barged into the place of worship and sprayed bullets,” Fateh Sharif, a 19-year-old student, told Reuters from Model Town.

“They had long beards. They were carrying rucksacks.” Bhutta said a suicide vest laden with explosives was recovered from the Model Town worship place, where some attackers escaped. One fired at a television van before the area was made safe.

“He was young, clean-shaven. He sprayed bullets at our van while fleeing the scene,” Rabia Mehmood, a reporter told Reuters.

ATTACKS LAUNCHED AFTER PRAYERS

Witnesses said the assaults were launched shortly after prayers.

“I saw some gunmen run towards the Ahmadis’ place of worship and then I heard blasts and gunfire,” Mohammad Nawaz, a resident, told Reuters.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said it had warned of threats against the Ahmadi community centre in Lahore for more than a year and demanded “foolproof security and protection” from the government.

It expressed concern over “the increasing sectarian dimension” of militancy in Pakistan, which it called “a big security threat to the entire society”.

Friday’s shootings were the worst attacks in Pakistan since March 12 suicide attacks seconds apart killed 57 people in Lahore while targeting the Pakistani military.

Nine attacks have now killed more than 220 people in Lahore over the past year, a historical city, playground for the elite and home to many top brass in Pakistan military and intelligence establishment.
