Chinese Built Light Rails whisks One Million Hajis to Mecca from Mina, Arafat & Muzdalifah

JNN 19 Nov 2010 Mecca : The Mecca Metro in Saudi Arabia has carried more than one million pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage, builder of the line China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) said Saturday.

During the five-days of activity, the metro ran more than 700 times, said CRCC, which will also run the line for three years.

The Mecca Metro, the first dual-track light railway in Saudi Arabia, began operating on Nov 13, 2010 to ease congestion during pilgrims’ visits to Mecca.

The 18-kilometer-long line with nine stations links Mecca and the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah. It can carry up to 72,000 passengers in one hour.

The project is expected to operate at 35 percent capacity in the first phase and reach full capacity by May 2011. But it operated at over 50 percent capacity when it began operation.

The US$1.8 billion in line was the first cooperation project between China and Saudi Arabia after the two countries signed an agreement in June 2008 to enhance cooperation in infrastructure construction.

The line was the first light rail system built by Chinese companies in the Middle East.

Egypt slams US for meddling in its internal affairs

JNN 19 Nov 2010 Cairo : Egypt has slammed the US for interfering in its internal affairs after Washington called for international observers to monitor the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

In a surprisingly harsh tone, Cairo criticized Washington in a statement on Thursday for meddling in internal affairs of a sovereign nation.

“The latest positions taken by the administration towards internal Egyptian affairs is something that is absolutely unacceptable,” AFP quoted the statement released by the Egyptian foreign ministry on Friday.

“It is as if the United States has turned into a caretaker of how Egyptian society should conduct its own politics,” it argued.

“It seems that the US insists on not respecting the privacy of the Egyptian society and making statements that incense Egypt’s nationalism,” it further added. “Whoever thinks that this is possible is deluded.”

The statement explained that Egypt would continue reciprocal relationship with the United States as long as Washington showed mutual respect for Cairo.

On Monday, the US State Department called on Egypt to hold a free election and allow international monitors to observe the November 28 parliamentary poll.

In response to the Egyptian criticism, US State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley announced that Washington is keeping a close eye on the elections to make sure it meets the international standards.

“This is not interfering in Egyptian affairs. This is encouraging a very close friend of the United States that its elections are vitally important and that its people want to see and have opportunities for greater participation in Egypt’s political system and have a government that is more representative of all segments of Egyptian society,” he added.

Militants set atleast 10 NATO Oil tankers on fire in Peshawar

JNN 10 Nov 2010 Peshawar : Unknown militants have set at least 10 NATO oil tankers on fire in the city of Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, security officials say.

Police officials told Press TV that several armed militants attacked an auto-mechanic workshop at Ring Road area in the city on Saturday and set the tankers ablaze.

Police and relief teams reached the spot after the incident and recovered a 2.5-kilogram bomb at the site of the attack. The attackers fled from the scene while opening fire.

The NATO oil tankers were parked at a workshop in Peshawar due to the closure of Pak-Afghan Highway.

Fire brigade teams managed to control the blaze within half an hour. No independent group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pro-Taliban militants have destroyed scores of NATO vehicles in northwestern and southwestern Pakistan over the past years.

The militants say the assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US drone strikes inside Pakistan’s tribal belt.

Eighty percent of NATO supplies are transported to war-ravaged Afghanistan through Pakistan.

The supply line has become increasingly vulnerable to militant attacks in recent months.

Indian Shia Muslims Asks clerics to Draw a Peace Plan to avert any Violence in the Upcoming Muharam

JNN 19 Nov 2010  Lucknow : Several Shia organisations in a meeting on Thursday appealed to Muslim clerics for maintaining peace during the upcoming Muharram. The organisations also denounced the pressure building tactics by some Muslim clerics for transfer of some officials.

“The clerics must think twice about their act of mounting pressure in the name of Muharram processions on the state government. Their move is nothing more than a face saving situation,” said Shia community leader Ghazanfar Agha on Thursday. The organizations decried the violent protest on November 13 by some Shia youths after the arrest of Maulana Kalbe Jawwad in an issue involving supremacy over Shia PG College. “Maulana Jawwad should distance himself from such elements who indulged in violence. This is not Lucknow’s tehzeeb. Tearing government hoardings, slogan shouting against Chief Minister, attacking petrol pump and poor vendors is not justified. One cannot also place any demand in the backdrop of such violence,” said Agha.

Decrying Jawwad’s supporter, he remarked that Shia community is already backward and it will lead to further alienation. “Instead of wasting their energy they should sit together and help in peaceful Muharram. There are other issues such as sprucing up civic amenities during Muharram should be taken up in right earnest,” he added. The major organisations which attended the meeting held at Katra Abu Turab Khan included Al Asr Foundation, All India Shia Unity Council, Tanzeem-e-Shianey Haiderey Karar, Shia Young Society, Abu Talib MIssion, Imam-e-Hasan Academy, Tanzeem-e-Millat, Taziyedar Sewak Sangh and Imam-e-Raza Committee.
