Ayatullah Khamenei’s Remarks in Meeting with Members of the Assembly of Experts

The Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has stressed that the Islamic system of government in Iran has led to a Muslim awakening within the world of Islam, and this has endangered the interests of the arrogant powers. Speaking in a meeting with the head and members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the Supreme Leader stressed that the Islamic system of government, and the many blessings which have followed on from the Islamic revolution, such as the awakening of Muslims within the Islamic world, has endangered the vested interests of the arrogant powers. The Supreme Leader added: “The oppressive and arrogant powers are united in their opposition to the Islamic republic of Iran, precisely for this reason, and thus it is incumbent upon all of us to do everything we can to preserve (protect) and safeguard the Islamic system of government and its cornerstone principles and tenets.

In further remarks, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said monotheism is the central tenet (principle) of the Islamic republic’s system of government, and justice, generosity and greatness of the people, and people’s votes are the other core principles (tenets) of the Islamic republic. The Supreme Leader said with this Islamic perspective, the people’s role and the people’s presence, the most important manifestation of which is the people’s votes in elections, is one of the most important issues (topics) in the country, and this is why elections in Iran are real elections, where people decide through their votes, and the elections are not ‘pretend elections’ or fake elections or imitative.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei added: “In the Islamic republic, unlike most countries who claim to champion democracy, wealthy and powerful lobbies or special interest groups do not sway people’s votes, and the nation makes up its own mind — the people decide through their vote – even though in some instances the people’s choice or the people’s decision may be the wrong choice or decision. But at any rate, it is the people’s decision, it is their choice, and we must all accept that.
The Supreme Leader went on to call for clear delineation, and clear distance between all those who support the Islamic republic and the enemies of Islam, the enemies of the Islamic republic, particularly with regards to certain key issues which concern the identity of the Islamic republic. However, he added: “A plurality of opinion on other secondary issues or ’side issues’ is actually a good thing and leads to progress”.

Turning to people’s participation in elections within the Islamic republic, the Supreme Leader said the many blessings of this participation include ‘healthy competition’, ‘a more vibrant society’, a more powerful Islamic government, and better management.

In further remarks, the Supreme Leader said: “The best possible case is when we have a stable society, but a society which is full of change and innovation. It is for this reason that within the Islamic republic, we try to maintain stability and at the same time conduct all election campaigning within the bounds of the fundamental principles of the Islamic republic. If some election candidates decide to move outside these bounds, then that is wrong, and is not proper election campaigning.

The Supreme Leader warned those who aren’t willing to obey the law, or to accept the choice and the votes of the majority of the people, saying these people effectively turn a point of strength – namely a proud election where forty million people took part and cast their ballots – into a point of weakness. The Supreme Leader said these people effectively throw themselves overboard from this ’ship of salvation’ which is the Islamic republic.

Before the Supreme Leader’s speech, Chairman of the Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said Thursday’s meeting of the body was buoyed by the massive rallies marking the Islamic Revolution’s anniversary on February 11th, and the massive rallies on 30th December.
