A negotiated solution still open to Iran: US

WASHINGTON: US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly says a negotiable solution to Iran nuclear issue is still achievable.

He noted that envoys from the US, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany in their meeting in Frankfurt on Wednesday called on Iran to engage in direct talks based on mutual respect.
They stressed that a negotiated solution is still open to Iran, news reports quoted Kelly as saying.
They expected Iran . to respond to the offer of talks (issued by the six) in April by agreeing to meet before the UN General Assembly meeting, Kelly said, adding the six powers could not be sure that Iran would do so.
The major world powers are pressing Iran to accept an offer of face-to-face nuclear talks before a key UN meeting in late September, the US spokesman added.
The UN General Assembly meets in New York the week of September 21.
When asked if the assembly meeting amounted to a deadline, the State Department spokesman replied, I don’t know if I’d call it a deadline, but it certainly is giving them a time frame.

Kelly declined to predict what we’re going to do if Iran did not respond to the offer of talks by the time of the assembly meeting.
