Pakistan rejects claim it modified missiles

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — Pakistan on Sunday rejected a report in The New York Times that said it illegally modified U.S.-supplied anti-ship missiles to make them capable of striking land-based targets.

Such a modification would pose a threat to Pakistan’s neighbor and historical rival, India, the Times story said.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said it “categorically rejected” the accusation.

Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, also called the accusations incorrect and “based on wrong intelligence.”

“We will make sure that the U.S. understands the correct picture and we will fight back periodic efforts to falsely blame Pakistan, which remains a critical U.S. ally in fighting terrorism,” Haqqani told the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan on Sunday.

“Instead of false accusations, U.S. media should help Pakistan secure the help it needs to fight our common enemy … terrorism,” he added. The Times report, which appeared Saturday, quoted unnamed senior administration and congressional officials as saying that they suspect Pakistan altered the Harpoon anti-ship missiles that the United States sold to the south Asian country in the 1980s.

American intelligence agencies apparently detected a suspicious — and unannounced — missile test by Pakistan in April, and brought the charge about the modification to top Pakistani officials in June in an unpublicized protest, the newspaper said.

Such an addition to Pakistan’s arsenal would give its navy the ability to strike targets in India from the sea — and would stoke tensions between the nations.

The two countries have fought three declared wars against each other, and had several other skirmishes, since their independence in 1947.

The newspaper report comes as U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration is asking Congress to approve $7.5 billion in aid to Pakistan over the next five years

Ammar Hakim will be chosen as ISCI head

Sheikh Hamam Hamoudi, an official to the Iraqi Supreme Islamic Council (ISCI) in an interview with Aswat al-Iraq News Agency said the Council will introduce Sayyed Ammar al-Hakim as the new head of the Supreme Islamic Council in the next meeting soon. “All members of the Central Council of (ISCI) had agreed to select Sayyed Ammar al-Hakim as the head of the Council before the demise of Sayyed Abdul Aziz Hakim,” the Iraqi MP noted. He said that according to the regulations of the Islamic Supreme Council, Ammar Hakim is heading the council. Sheikh Hamam Hamoudi also rejected any difference in this regard.

Hezbollah renews call for freedom of Imam Mussa al-Sadr

TEHRAN, Aug. 31 (MNA) — In a statement issued on Monday Lebanon’s Islamic resistance movement Hezbollah asked the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to force Libya to free Imam Mussa al-Sadr, the prominent Shia leader who disappeared in Libya 31 years ago.

Al-Sadr was an Iranian-born Lebanese philosopher who spent many years of his life in Lebanon as a religious and political leader.

In August 1978, al-Sadr departed for Libya with two companions to meet officials from Libyan leader Muammar al-Qadhafi’s government. They were never heard from again, and many believe they met with foul play at the hands of Qadhafi.

In the latest development in the case, Lebanon recently issued an arrest warrant for Qadhafi and 11 other Libyan officials charged with kidnapping Imam Mussa al-Sadr.

Libya has consistently denied responsibility, claiming that al-Sadr and his companions left Libya for Italy in 1978. However, others claim that al-Sadr is still alive and is being held in a secret jail in Libya.

Hezbollah said Libya is first and foremost responsible for al-Sadr’s disappearance.

In its statement Hezbollah insisted that the disappearance of Al-Sadr is a national and Islamic issue and Hezbollah will continue its efforts to keep his memory alive.

The statement added the hiding of this religious figure will not lead to a disappearance of his thoughts and goals.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the office of the Lebanese Amal Movement in Tehran also called for al-Sadr’s freedom.

The statement said that measures taken by Iran and Lebanon over the last 30 years to free the cleric have not been proportionate with the degree of the crime committed by the Libyan government.

At the meeting, the leader referred to the recent post-election events and stated that these events can be considered as a determining political test for the country and the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran due to its ample capacities has managed to overcome the issues revolving around the recent presidential election.
The leader underlined that such events were not so unexpected and that is due to the mission of the Islamic system and the existence of freedom in the society within the framework of Islam.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the commanders must identify the enemy’s objectives and learn about major issues and such university professors are considered as deserving professors for the present time and the future of the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Why Imam Hussayn (a) is not forgotten?

Writer: Ayatollah Nasir Makarem Shirazi:

Most of us know this reality, but the point that is not known to many (especially non-Islamic scholars); that point that has remained a mystery is:

Why is such importance given to this historical event which is similar in numbers and manners to many other events? Why are the commemoration ceremonies stronger and more emotional year after year?

Why has the event of Karbala taken on a form of eternity despite the fact that the Ummayad dynasty has come to an end and the champions of this event should have become forgotten?

The answers to these questions must be searched for in the depths of the revolution. The analysis of this event is not very complicated for one who is familiar with Islamic history.

In clearer terms, the bloody event of Karbala did not stem from two political rivals who are after power and land.

Likewise, this event did not stem from tribal hatred that remained in two people’s hearts.

This event is a clear picture of a fight between two individual and theological schools of thought whose flames started with the advent of mankind and continue until today. These flames have not been put out. This fight was the continuation of the fight that all the prophets performed and that all of the people seeking positive reform in the universe. In other terms, it was a continuation of the Badr and Ahzab wars.

We all know that when the Prophet of Islam (s) stood up as the leader of an intellectual and social revolution to save mankind from idol-worship and superstition; and to free mankind from the claws of ignorance he gathered all of the oppressed people under his wings. At this time the people who opposed this reform movement, who were led by the wealthy of Mecca, lined up and used all of their might to destroy it. This efforts against Islam were led by the Ummayad clan which was led by Abu Sufyan.

But, at the end, they surrendered to the influence of Islam and their complete infrastructure was defeated.

It is self evident that this destruction does not mean that they became extinct; rather, they changed tactics. They used to perform their anti-Islamic activities in the open, but now they performed them gradually behind closed doors. This is the plan of any stubborn and weak enemy; lying in the trenches waiting for an opportunity.

After the death of the Prophet (s), the Ummayads tried to influence the system of Islamic leadership in order to create a movement which would lead people back to the pre-Islamic lifestyle. The more time that passed since the Prophet’s (s) death the easier this would be.

The customs of the Age of Ignorance which were enlivened after the Prophet passed away by people other than the Ummayads created the groundwork for an ‘ignorant revolution.’

For instance:

1. The issue of racism, which was completely crossed out by Islam, was brought back to life by some of the caliphs. The Arab race took on a special superiority over other races.
2. Various forms of ism which were not in congruence with the spirit of Islam appeared. The public treasury, which was distributed amongst the Muslims equally during the lifetime of the Prophet (s) transformed into something else. People were given unfounded merits and the whole system of tribalism reappeared.
3. The positions which were granted to people during the lifetime of the Prophet (s) due to one’s intellectual, ethical, and spiritual worth was now given due to tribalism and were divided up amongst the tribe of the caliph.

During these conditions, Abu Sufyan’s son, Mu’awiayah, entered the political arena and took charge of one of the most sensitive areas in the Islamic world (Sham). This is where he laid the foundations, with the aid of the remaining parties of the Age of Ignorance, to take control of the Islamic government and to bring the customs of that dark age back into the forefront.

This wave was so severe that pure individuals such as ‘Ali (a) were unable to do anything during the caliphate.

The face of this un-Islamic movement was so clear; their leaders were unable to mask themselves.

Abu Sufyan, in his strange historical quote, stated when the caliphate was transferred to the Ummayads and the Marwan Tribe: “Beware Ummayads! Try to pass the leadership amongst yourselves. I swear upon that which I swear upon that heaven and hell do exist [and that Muhammad’s movement was a political one].”

Mu’awiyah stated in Kufa when he took control of Iraq: “I have not come so that you perform prayer and fast. I have come to rule over you. I will destroy whoever opposes me.”

Yazid said when he saw the heads of the martyrs of Karbala: “I wish my ancestors who were killed in Badr were here to see this. I wish they were able to see this scene of revenge that I took from the Hashimi Tribe.”

These are all telling pieces of evidence which depict the quiddity of their anti-Islamic movement. The more they progressed the bolder they became.

Could Imam Hussayn (a) remain silent in regards to this serious threat against Islam which reached its peak during the reign of Yazid? Would Allah, the Prophet, and the righteous individual that he rose accept that?

Was it not his duty to destroy the silence that prevailed over the Muslim society with an extraordinary show of selflessness? Was it not his duty to reveal the evil face of this ignorant movement from behind the marketing of the Ummayads? Was it not his duty to create an epic in Islamic history with his blood?

Hussayn (a) did just this. He performed his huge Islamic duties and changed the direction that Islam was taking. He destroyed the anti-Islamic plans that the Ummayads had.

This is the true face of Hussayn’s (a) uprising. From here it becomes clear why Imam Hussayn’s (a) name and the history do not become forgotten. He is not attributed to one time; rather, his goal was an eternal goal.

He was martyred along the path of truth, justice, and freedom; along the path of Allah and Islam; along the path of man’s salvation and enlivening human merits. Do such concepts become old? Are such concepts forgotten? Never.

Who was victorious?

Were the victors of this Great War the bloodthirsty and worldly Ummayad soldiers? Or, were the victors Imam Hussayn (a) and his companions who gave their lives along the path of love of the truth and along the path of Allah?

This question is answered by paying attention to the real meanings of victory and defeat. Victory does not mean that one leaves the battlefield untouched or that one’s enemy was killed. Victory does mean that man progressed along the path of his ultimate goal and did not allow his enemy to reach his goal.

The final results of this bloody war become completely clear by paying attention to this meaning of the word. It is true that Hussayn (a) and his loyal companions tasted the drink of martyrdom after fighting like champions, but they reached their goals, in an honorable way.

The goal was clarify what the quiddity of the Ummayad’s anti-Islamic movement was. The goal was to awaken the general Muslim body so that they become aware of the plans of these people who remained from the Age of Ignorance; who took pride in the customs of disbelief and idol-worship. These goals were clearly met.

In the end, they cut down the trees of Ummayad oppression. They laid the groundwork to destroy the government that was stolen and that took pride in bringing customs of the Age of Ignorance, of corruption, of racism, and of oppression back into the forefront.

Yazid’s government showed its true face to everyone by killing righteous members of the Prophet’s family (s), especially Imam Hussayn (a) who was a great Islamic leader.

It is not strange that in all of the Islamic revolutions that occurred after the event of Karbala ‘revenge for these martyrs’ and ‘the satisfaction of the Prophet’s progeny’ is seen. This occurred until the Abbasid dynasty who took benefit from this issue in its own government – then they took the path of oppression.

What victory is greater than this where not only does one reach their goals, but they also become a role model for all free people of the world?

Why do we mourn?

It is asked that if Imam Hussayn (a) was victorious why do we cry? Why don’t we hold a celebration? Is it suitable to cry so much over a victory?

Those who make this criticism do not understand the philosophy behind mourning. They mistake the tears that the mourners of Imam Hussayn (a) shed with the weeps of weak individuals.

There are four types of crying or tears:

1. Happy tears; for example the tears of a mother who has just found her child years after he went missing or the tears of a lover who has just gained the satisfaction of the loved after years of struggle.
2. Compassion tears; tears which stem from a healthy heart, not a heart that is as hard as a rock. These tears show the levels of compassion that a human has; for example they are the tears that flow when one sees an orphan freezing in the cold and crying because he was separated from his father, or the tears that are seen when one witnesses the murder of an infant, such as the murder of the infant at Karbala.
3. Tears of success; sometimes one cries when he reaches his goals. In regards to Karbala, these tears are the tears that announce one’s loyalty to Imam Hussayn (a) and his companions; that announce one’s loyalty to the struggle against oppression. Are such tears possible without knowing what the goals of Imam Hussayn (a) were?
4. Tears of defeat; these are the tears of weak individuals who did not reach their goals and who do not have the motivation to continue. Never shed such tears for Imam Hussayn (a) because he despises such tears. If you cry make sure the tears you are shedding are happy tears, compassion tears, or tears of success.

But, knowing what Imam Hussayn (a) and his companions stood for is more important than mourning. Practically aligning oneself with those goals is also more important than mourning.

Thousands in Iraq mourn loss of top Shiite leader

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Tens of thousands converged Friday on the streets of Baghdad to pay final respects to one of Iraq’s top Shiite leaders.Security was tight for the funeral procession of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, who died in Iran on Wednesday of lung cancer.

The streets leading to the Kadhimiya district were sealed off Friday, and Iraqi air force helicopters hovered overhead.

Sobbing mourners beat their chests and heads, a traditional Shiite way of mourning. They swarmed around the coffin trying to touch it as it was carried into the Kadhimiya shrine, one of Shiite Islam’s holiest.

The funeral procession began earlier Friday at Baghdad International Airport, where Al-Hakim‘s body arrived from Iran. Top Iraqi officials and Western diplomats, including Britain’s ambassador to Iraq, Christopher Prentice, were there, along with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

The funeral procession then went to the Buratha mosque near Kadhimiya. At Buratha, Friday prayers were led by al-Hakim’s likely successor, his eldest son, Ammar. As people packed the party’s main mosque in the capital, many sat crying as they listened to Ammar al-Hakim talk about his father’s life and his final days in a Tehran, Iran, hospital.Al-Hakim had lived in exile in Iran for more than 20 years, finally returning to Iraq in 2003 after U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein and his regime.

“It was very emotional for me to meet with my people after Saddam fell,” the Shiite leader told CNN in 2006. “I was longing to see them. My goal in this life is to serve those great people, and I am very proud to be a part of them.”

Iraqi Shiites were suppressed under Hussein’s regime, which favored the country’s minority Sunni Muslims.

After his return, al-Hakim played a central role in shaping Iraq’s future. He urged Iraqis to shun bitter sectarian conflict after Hussein’s fall.

Al-Hakim, who was born in 1950, was considered one of Iraq’s most powerful men. Though he never held a government position, his political bloc won the most seats in the Iraqi parliament in 2005.

President Bush considered him an ally and called him when talks on the Iraqi Constitution stalled. He visited the United States three times during the Bush administration to discuss the situation in Iraq.

Ammar al-Hakim’s address and eulogy on Friday also had political messages. He described how his father, in an unconscious state Monday, signaled his approval for the newly formed mainly Shiite alliance ahead of Iraq’s elections.

The Iranian-backed alliance that was announced Monday included all of Iraq’s top Shiite parties, but excluded al-Maliki’s Dawa party.

In a not-so-subtle hint to the prime minister and his party, Ammar al-Hakim also used the occasion to send a message to parties that did not join the alliance, telling them to reconsider their decision.

Al-Hakim’s party, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, lost much of its popularity in recent years. In January’s provincial elections, it lost much of its control in the south and Baghdad to al-Maliki’s candidates.

The Shiite leader’s death comes at a critical time in Iraq, with fractures in Shiite politics and an uncertain future for his party and for Iraq. Al-Maliki acknowledged as much when he spoke earlier Friday at the Baghdad airport.

Ammar al-Hakim, who has been groomed for years to take over party leadership, is the most likely successor. The senior members of the party, known as its Shura Council, will vote on leadership in the coming days.

TRUCK BOMBS KILL 16 PEOPLE IN IRAQ

Two truck bombs struck separate communities north of Iraq’s capital on Saturday, killing at least 16 people. According to AFP, Saturday’s deadliest attack came at about 8 a.m. local time when a truck bomber attacked a small police station in the remote village of Hamad north of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people, including six police.
Police at a checkpoint attempted to stop the truck, forcing the attacker to change direction and slam into a concrete barrier close to an open air market, they said. The police officials said twelve people were also wounded in the attack.

Saudi Arabia frees 17 Shia political inmates

Saudi Arabia on Monday freed 17 political inmates from the Ismaili community who had been jailed since 2000, sources said, in a new sign of easing tensions with the minority group based near the Yemen border.

Saudi Arabia on Monday freed 17 political inmates from the Ismaili community who had been jailed since 2000, sources said, in a new sign of easing tensions with the minority group based near the Yemen border.

King Abdullah ordered the release of the predominantly young Shia Ismailis about six months before the end of their 10-year jail sentence as part of a broader royal pardon for hundreds of inmates in the kingdom to mark the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the sources said.

“The 17 Ismailis were released this afternoon,” a source at the governorate of the southern Najran province told Reuters. “The order to release … (them) came on Sunday,” he said.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said any comment should come from the royal court. Reuters was unable to contact the court.

Mohammad al-Askar, a leading Ismaili activist, said the move put an end to “one of the most sensitive issues” that had been irritating the minority group.

“One of the 17 inmates called me early this morning to say that he and the other 16 were asked by prison authorities to sign a pledge not to participate again in protests and unrest before they get released,” Askar said.

The 17 male prisoners had initially been sentenced to death by public beheading in 2001 under the reign of King Fahd before the de facto ruler King Abdullah — who was then crown prince — commuted in 2002 the sentences to 10 years in prison.

The prisoners were arrested after a meeting in 2000 with the then governor of Najran province, a royal disliked by Saudi Ismailis, to ask for the release of an Ismaili teacher, ended in clashes that left two civilians injured.

“This is the news of the year (for Ismailis) … It shows how the government mentality has begun to change under the new (Najran) governor,” said Askar.

King Abdullah appointed one of his sons, Prince Mishaal, as governor of Najran last year after Ismaili Shias complained that efforts to settle Sunnis of Yemeni origin and give them housing and jobs were an effort to marginalise Ismailis further.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia said it would give land to Najran’s inhabitants in a move diplomats say was intended to improve security and combat crime. [ID:nL1558440]

Ismaili Shias, a majority in the Najran area but a minority in mainly Sunni Saudi Arabia, have long complained of discrimination and poor living standards.

Saudi authorities are keen to improve security along the border with Yemen, which is fighting a rebellion by Shias there and is also a possible staging post for attacks against them by al Qaeda.

In April, the Saudi Interior Ministry said it had arrested 11 al Qaeda-linked militants in mountains close to Yemen, accusing them of planning attacks.

Saudi Arabia and Yemen share a long mountainous border porous enough to be used for all sorts of trafficking, from illegal Muslim pilgrims to drugs and weapons.

Michigan Shi'ite Muslims mourn Iraqi leader’s death

Memorials planned on Friday in Dearborn as local Shi’ite Muslims mourn the death of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, an Iraqi religious and political leader who is well-known in metro Detroit’s Shi’ite communities.

Hakim, who once headed Iraq’s biggest political party, visited Michigan in December 2006, speaking at local Lebanese Shi’ite, Iraqi and Chaldean centers after meeting with then President George W. Bush. Hakim, 59, died Wednesday.

“It’s a great loss,” said Imam Husham Al-Husainy, head of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn. “It’s very sad. People are crying and coming into the center.”

Hundreds are expected to attend the services at the Karbalaa center in Dearborn. And many are watching the funeral services in Iran on satellite TV stations, Al-Husainy said.

Hakim was head of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council, formerly known as SCIRI, Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq. He hailed from a prominent Shi’ite family of scholars and teachers.

Many of Hakim’s family members were killed by the former regime of Saddam, and he spent his life trying to win freedom for Iraqis, Al-Husainy said.

In metro Detroit, Shi’ites of Iraqi descent admired him, as did Lebanese-American Shi’ites.

In December 2006, Hakim spoke to Shi’ite Muslims at Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn, a hall named after a town in southern Lebanon largely populated by Shi’ite Muslims.

He told the crowd that Al Qaeda and remnants of the former regime of Saddam Hussein are behind the terrorist violence in Iraq.

“It’s not the Shi’ites doing this,” Hakim said through a translator. “It’s not the Sunnis doing this. It’s the terrorists, the outsiders.”

Hakim also spoke to Chaldeans, Iraqi Catholics, in Southfield and West Bloomfield, and at the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn.

Hakim stressed religious and ethnic unity in his talk, noting that Shi’ites, Sunnis, Arabs, Kurds, Turkomen and Christians have long lived together in Iraq.

The recent violence between the groups is an aberration — not the historical norm — he said.

“We have nothing against each other,” Hakim said. “We go back hundreds of years, living together.”

Hezbollah Condemns Organized Campaign against Sayyed Fadlallah

Two days after the March 14 “orchestra” started a campaign against Lebanon’s top cleric Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah because of the latter’s criticism of Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir’s latest comments, Hezbollah broke its silence and condemned the “organized” campaign against Sayyed Fadlallah declaring its complete solidarity with the top cleric.

On Tuesday, Sayyed Fadlallah slammed Patriarch Sfeir who has been calling for a cabinet based on the outcome of the parliamentary polls. “Why do you restrict the issue to the parliamentary majority?” his eminence wondered during an Iftar in a clear reference to Sfeir’s demands. “We call for a popular majority and popular referendum … so that people would have their say.”

Sfeir has said that the government should be made up of the parliamentary majority while the opposition should remain outside the cabinet.

In response to Sayyed Fadlallah’s comments, Patriarch Sfeir’s “spokesmen” in the March 14 secretariat general said Wednesday that no one can take away “the glory of Lebanon from its makers.” In a statement after its regular meeting, March 14 slammed what it called “the organized campaign” targeting Sfeir, paving the way for the whole “majority orchestra” to show their “verbal” competences.

In reaction, and while Sayyed Fadlallah remained silent and refrained from responding to such campaign, Hezbollah media relations issued a statement on Friday in which it condemned the campaign that broke all red lines.

“In the logic of freedom, it’s everybody’s right to discuss the stances taken by Sayyed Mohamad Hussein Fadlallah concerning the glory of Lebanon or the partnership, parliamentary and popular majority. It’s also everybody’s right to accept or reject Sayyed Fadlallah’s statements,” Hezbollah said, regretting the issuance in response of comments and statements “that surpassed all the limits of courtesy and decency and made use of fierce expressions, resorting to the personal insult of Sayyed Fadlallah, ignoring his eminence’s position, status and symbolism at national and Islamic levels.”

“Hezbollah condemns and denounces this organized media campaign that targeted his eminence and that reflects the level of deterioration and decadence reached not only in the political rhetoric but also in the political life in Lebanon where there aren’t anymore values or dignities,” the statement read.

The Resistance bloc said that discussing the ideas of any religious figure was natural “and everyone is free to accept or reject the stances of any religious figure. But to insult the other’s dignities is completely unacceptable. This is how the discussion of the political stances of the Maronite Patriarch becomes eligible and is different than insulting his religious dignity.”

Hezbollah concluded its statement by calling to re-purify the political and media scene from inappropriate speeches and to safeguard the religious dignity to all sects alongside holding the right of discussion and dialogue. “This is Lebanon that we all claim that we are keen on preserving.”

World Shia Leader mourns Hakim's passing

World Shia Leader has extended his condolences to the Iraqi government and nation over the passing of Shia political figure Abdulaziz Hakim.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei expressed his ‘great sorrow’ over the passing of the head of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council.

“I express my great sorrow over this tragic loss and extend my sincere condolences to the Iraqi nation, government, the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council and his family.”

Describing Hakim as the scion of a revered clerical family, Ayatollah Khamenei praised the top Shia figure’s contributions to the establishment of a national government in Iraq.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, head of Iran’s Expediency Council Mr. Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani,, Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani and senior clerics Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi and Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi-Golpaygani also offered their condolences over his passing.

Abdulaziz Hakim died of lung cancer at the age 60 in a hospital in Tehran on Wednesday.

The top Shia political figure, who headed Iraq’s most powerful party, was hospitalized in an advanced medical faculty in Tehran last month.

He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States. Following the diagnosis, he made several trips to Iran for chemotherapy before being hospitalized.

German prosecutors seek life for 'veil martyr' killer

BERLIN — German prosecutors said on Tuesday they would push for a life sentence against a man charged with the brutal Islamophobic murder of a pregnant Egyptian woman, dubbed the “veil martyr.”Prosecutors in the eastern city of Dresden said Alex W., a 28-year-old Russian-born German, was motivated by “a pronounced hatred of non-Europeans and Muslims.”
As psychiatric experts had found no evidence of diminished responsibility, prosecutors said they would seek a life sentence.

Further information on when a trial might take place would be published later in the week, they said.

On July 1, Alex W. set upon Marwa al-Sherbini as she gave evidence against him in a court in Dresden, stabbing her 16 times in the chest and back with an 18-cm-long (seven-inch) knife in front of her young son, the prosecution said.

The death of the 31-year-old fuelled anti-German sentiment in some Muslim countries including in her home country and Iran.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the German government for the killing, while demonstrations were staged outside the German embassies in Tehran and Cairo.

The alleged murderer, who previously called the headscarf-wearing Sherbini an “Islamist” and a “terrorist,” also stabbed her geneticist husband Elwy Okaz, who was shot in the leg by confused police who took him for the attacker.

W. has also been charged with Okaz’s attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

Alex W. is a “Spaetaussiedler” (“late emigrant”), the name given to eastern Europeans of German descent entitled to German citizenship who have settled in Dresden in large numbers.

Khatami denounced trial confessions

ILNA: ”Authorities should stop spreading immoralities and illegal moves, which will harm the Islamic establishment” Mohammad Khatami.Iran Former president Mohammad Khatami denounced confessions of top opposition Reformist figures made at fourth trial of post election unrests.

In a statement issued by his office a day after the trial, Khatami said reports made during recent weeks were ‘lies and baseless’.
“Such claims are sheer lies and false,” said the statement.
Khatami called on Iranian authorities to ‘stop spreading immoralities and illegal moves, which will harm the Islamic establishment’.
In Tuesday court session in Tehran, Iranian-American scholar Kian Tajbakhsh, a former member of the Soros Foundation in Iran, said in his defense statement that Khatami and Mohammad-Javad Zarif, the Iranian envoy to the United Nations, met George Soros, the founder of the network, in 2006.

PROTEST AT NETANYAHU’S VISIT TO LONDON

Friends of the Zionist occupied al Aqsa Mosque, together with other peace campaign organizations, held a demonstration outside the British Prime Minister’s Office in London Tuesday to protest Gordon Brown’s hosting of ringleader of the usurper state of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. According to IRIB, “Stop the War Coalition” and the “Palestine Solidarity Campaign” joined in the protest against Netanyahu’s first visit to the UK since he became prime minister for the second time earlier this year.
Netanyahu was responsible for a series of war crimes and countless violations of international law during his first tenure in office between 1996 and 1999.
His visit coincides with Israel continuing its siege of Gaza in defiance of world opinion, while it is currently being investigated by the UN for war crime during its latest holocaust earlier this year in which over 1,400 Palestinians were massacred.

Bomb attack wounds 26 in Thailand

PATTANI, Thailand: Suspected Muslim insurgents detonated a car bomb outside a crowded open-air restaurant during lunchtime Wednesday, wounding 26 people, security officials said.
The restaurant in the city of Narathiwat was packed with civil servants and civilians when the 110-pound (50-kilogram) bomb exploded, said army spokesman Col. Parinya Chaidilok.
He said the bomb was hidden in a pickup truck outside the restaurant and triggered by a mobile phone.
“The suspect parked the truck and fled in a motorcycle waiting on the other side of the road,” he said. “The blast occurred a few minutes after that.”
The explosion damaged two cars and three motorcycles parked nearby, Parinya said.
Of those wounded, fifteen suffered minor injuries, said Police Lt. Col. Somchai Panomuppakan.
More than 3,700 people have been killed in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces — Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala — since an Islamist insurgency flared in January 2004. The provinces are the only Muslim-majority areas in the Buddhist-dominated country. Muslims in the area have long complained of discrimination by the central government.

Imam Moussa al Sadr

Imam Moussa al Sadr was a Lebanese Shiite religious and political leader who came from Iran to Lebanon. He was born in Qom, Iran, in 1928 to a prominent Lebanese family of theologians (Sadr ). In 1956, he got a degree in Islamic jurisprudence and Political Sciences from Tehran University. Later on, he went to the center of Shiite theological thinking, Najaf to study. In 1960, he accepted an invitation to become a leading figure in the Lebanese city of Tyre. In 1969, he was appointed as the first head of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council.

Imam al Sadr was quickly involved in Lebanese politics. Parallel to that, the Palestinian case inside the Lebanese territories was mounting. His activities in Tyre exceeded clerical activities. They included social services in their contemporary aspect, as he believed in the values of human beings and their freedom, dignity and prosperity of the dimensions of their personalities, for that was the way to amelioration. He visited deprived areas and lived the average living worry. He built relations with all, he lectured in churches, mosques, universities and associations about denouncing sectarianism by labeling religions as one in the origin, goal and destiny…

After the civil war erupted in Lebanon, he toured Arab countries to find a way out of the crisis. He made a visit to Lybia on August 25, 1978 accompanied by Sheikh Mohammed Yacoub and a reporter named Abbas Badreddine, never to return to the country. Many people accused the Lybian President Muammar al Qaddafhi of kidnapping the imam.

Founder of a Party

On the 18th of March, 1974, and following a series of demonstrations he led to protest against the government’s negligence of the rural areas, the Imam founded the “Movement of the Deprived” that adopted the slogan of continuous struggle until there are no deprived people left in Lebanon. During the civil war, he founded the Amal Movement the “Brigades of the Lebanese Resistance”, the military wing of the movement of the Deprived which fought alongside the Lebanese National Movement and the Palestinian Resistance.

He was distinguished among all of his contemporary spiritual and political leaders for his openness especially towards Christians. He co-founded the Social Movement with the Catholic Archbishop Gregoire Haddad in 1960, participating in the Islamic-Christian dialogue in 1962, and lectured in a Capuchin Christian Church during an Easter Fast in 1964. When he founded Amal, it was sure that the party was representing the basic platform of the Shiite community in Lebanon. Whatever the Supreme Islamic Council says, Amal abides by it. Al Sadr’s explanation for the founding of the party resides in the fact that it was carrying arms against Israel until the Southern part of Lebanon is liberated.

Imam al Sadr put the stress on an important point clarifying that all Lebanese Shiites must understand that Lebanon is their final refugee place where they should take shelter from any possible foreign aggressions, therefore, Lebanon is a patriotic end for all Lebanese Shiites. He thought that all Lebanese Shiites should be satisified with Lebanon as their final state, and refrain from looking to an Islamic state. This explains al Sadr’s enthusiasm to express his Lebanese identity in the middle of chaos in a country that was prepared to begin a civil war.

We need Him

Everybody in Lebanon asks: Do we need a savior to get rid of all crises in the country? Imam al Sadr’s travel to Lybia was really long. He did not return yet, however, his plan was broad and it encompassed hopes for a better country. If Imam al Sadr went before being able to say a final word, that is because his message for the Lebanese people was clear: “Lebanon is for all its people”and equally.

Some scholars thought that Imam al Sadr came to Lebanon in order to find a Muslim Republic like the Iranian example on the Lebanese soil, but that was not the case. Al Sadr was clear with Yassir Arafat when he told him that al Quds ( Jerusalem ), needs to be liberated from the inside and not the outside. He was clear with many figures and this is why he paid the price.

Imam al Sadr went and Lebanon was on the verge of finding solutions with his presence. He thought that all sects in Lebanon should coexist so that no internal conflicts are provoked and the country is saved from all its malaise. The Shiite community lost a leader. Some would like to compare Hizbullah’s Chairman Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah with al Sadr. Al Sadr was a modest man and a national one. He fasted for days calling for the sopping of the civil war in Al Amliyyeh Mosque, Ras al Nabaá. However, the forces of evil pushed the country for an internal strife and Lebanon paid a heavy price for that.

Ministry of prisoners slams Israel for suspending visits in Hadarim and Shikma

GAZA, (PIC)– The ministry of prisoners’ affairs deplored Tuesday the Israeli prisons authority (IPA) for barring Palestinian families from visiting their sons in the prisons of Hadarim and Shikma and allowing settlers to organize a protest outside these prisons to demand the termination of visits in Israeli jails.

The ministry revealed that it had informed the Red Cross a week ago about the intention of Israeli settlers to close streets and block Palestinian families from visiting their sons and called on it to protect the families from settlers’ attacks.

It accused the Israeli occupation authority of unleashing the settlers to harass the families of prisoners and prevent them from visiting their sons.

The ministry appealed to the international community to provide protection for prisoners against Israel’s violation of their rights as well as for their families against settlers’ assaults.

The Hebrew radio reported Monday that the IPA announced cancellation of the visits made by families of Palestinian prisoners in Hadarim and Shikma and added that this decision was taken as a result of the intention of settlers to organize a protest in solidarity with captive soldier Gilad Shalit, who is held by Palestinian resistance in Gaza Strip.

Monitors: Taliban cut off fingers of Afghan voters

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) — Making good on a threat of election day violence, the Taliban sliced off the index fingers of at least two people in Kandahar province, according to a vote monitoring group.

After they cast their ballots, the fingers of Afghan voters are stained with ink to prevent them from voting multiple times. The fingers of the two women in Kandahar, a stronghold of the Taliban, were cut off because they voted, said Nader Naderi of the Free and Fair Election Foundation.

The Taliban had vowed to disrupt Thursday’s election and the risk was too great for some Afghans to venture out, especially in the southern provinces that form the heartland of the radical Islamist group.

Just days ahead of the election, U.S. Marines and other NATO forces carried out military operations to clear and hold sectors that have long been in the Taliban grip, and free up the population to vote.

Sporadic attacks on election day killed 26 people and injured scores more. Still, Afghan officials hailed the voting as a success.

On Friday, the European Union echoed those sentiments and congratulated Afghanistan for holding elections under what it called challenging circumstances.

“While deploring the loss of life, we believe that the security measures successfully prevented any major disruptions of the elections,” the E.U. said in a statement.

Preliminary results will be announced on a piecemeal basis from Tuesday to September 5, according to the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan.

Iran:Doctors Day No job security for physicians

TEHRAN, Aug. 22 (MNA) — Tomorrow is National Doctors Day, which marks the birth anniversary of Ibn Sina, Avicenna (c. 980 – 1037), a Persian polymath and the foremost physician and philosopher of his time. He was also an astronomer, chemist, geologist, logician, paleontologist, mathematician, physicist, poet, psychologist, scientist and teacher.

According to official figures, there are about 110,000 general practitioners and specialists working across the country. They sometimes earn less than those in occupations requiring lower levels of qualification and expertise, despite the often grueling challenges they face in their work.

Insufficient effort has been made to avert the problems; perhaps people think that doctors have no serious troubles. Unfortunately it seems that they have been consigned to oblivion.

Lack of job security is the greatest dilemma facing doctors.

Speaking to the Mehr News Agency, the director of the Iranian Society of Radiology (ISR) noted that although the science of medicine is rooted in the ancient history of Iran, those who are involved in this branch of knowledge are dealing with legions of problems.

They face an uncertain future, Abd-ul-Rasul Sedaqat said, adding, “They are downplayed and seriously threatened by their patients.”

Blaming the government for this state of affairs, Sedaqat said, if the government behaves in a very responsible and graceful manner towards physicians in society, then no one will be allowed to menace or undermine them.

The director of the Iranian Society of Internists’ also said, “About 20 percent of the country’s 60 thousand general practitioners are not satisfied with their pay.”

Based on the figures of the above-mentioned society, Iraj Khosrow-Nia said, “Five thousand Iranian general practitioners and five thousand specialists are engaged in other activities instead of the medical profession due to the inadequacy of their salaries.

According to him, only 20 percent of general practitioners, 50 percent of specialists, and 65 percent of subspecialists lead a life of luxury, and 30 percent of general practitioners and specialists, and 25 percent of subspecialists just manage to earn a living.

Expressing sorrow for the fact that half of the general practitioners, 20 percent of specialists, and 10 percent of subspecialists are not satisfied with their standard of living, Khosrow-Nia said that in order to earn a decent wage the majority of medics “are bound to take on night shifts at hospitals even in their old age.”

Khosrow-Nia also called for the establishment of a board of directors to solve the problems with which medics are battling.

Herbs, vitamins that can hurt you

(CNN) — Carole Grant doesn’t really trust medical doctors. She never has. Whenever she has had a health issue, she has headed straight for an herbalist, acupuncturist or other “natural” healer.A few years ago, her alternative practitioner of choice was a self-described “intuitive healer” in New York, where she lives. The healer put Grant on a regimen of herbs, supplements and vitamins to help her lose weight.

A few weeks later, Grant, a geriatric care manager, was closing up an apartment for an elderly client who’d died when she started feeling strange sensations in her toes.

“They were tingling like crazy,” Grant said. “I thought it was the carpet in the apartment, because it was old and dirty, and I’d taken my shoes off.”

When the tingling in her toes spread to her feet, Grant knew that it was more than just the dingy carpet. When it spread to her legs, she knew that she was really in trouble.

“Both legs went numb up to my knees,” she remembers.

Grant sought help from a podiatrist, who insisted that she get care from a medical doctor. Grant chose Dr. Roberta Lee, vice chairwoman of the Department of Integrative Medicine at the Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. After some testing, Lee discovered the reason for Grant’s numbness: She had sky-high amounts of vitamin B6 in her blood, which can interfere with circulation.”The intuitive healer had told me to double my dose of vitamin B6,” Grant said. “She never told me when to stop the double dose, and I never checked with her.”

It turned out the healer was having Grant take about 100 times the normal dose of B6, according to Lee. The healer had intended for Grant to take this high dose for a few weeks. Instead, she took it for more than four months.

“It blew my mind to think this could happen to someone like me,” Grant said. “I’m so careful. I’ll use every natural modality I can before taking medicine.”

Lee says that although it’s unusual, she’s seen other patients get into trouble with herbs, supplements and vitamins precisely because they’re less cautious with something that’s natural than they would be with a drug.

“A lot of people think herbs are safe because they come from nature, and they are safe if used properly,” Lee said. “But you can still get into trouble with them.”

“I don’t think any herb is good or bad. It’s how we use it,” said Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at the Mayo Clinic. “Sometimes people take too much. They think, if two is good, then 20 must be better.”

Here’s a list of herbs and supplements that can be dangerous if taken the wrong way: either in high doses, in combination with certain drugs or before surgery.1. St. John’s wort

This herb, often taken to relieve depression, is always at the top of the list of potentially problematic natural remedies because it can cause serious side effects and increase or decrease the potency of many medications. The Mayo Clinic recommends that many people should avoid it, including those taking antidepressants, anti-blood-clotting drugs, certain asthma drugs, immune-suppressing medications or steroids.

2. Kava

A sedative herb, kava is associated with serious liver problems, even when taken for a very short time, according to the Mayo Clinic. It’s especially risky if you’re taking drugs to lower cholesterol.

3. Fish oil

Though it’s a very safe supplement to increase your intake of heart-healthy fat, Lee says she’s seen patients have excessive bleeding when taking high doses of fish oil. “It’s not life-threatening, but for example, I’ve seen where people are taking too much fish oil, and they’ll have prolonged bleeding from acupuncture needles.”

How much fish oil is too much? More than 5 grams — or 5,000 milligrams — a day, according to Bauer.

4. Artemisinin

Last week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, details the case of a man who developed hepatitis after taking the herb artemisinin for stomach problems. There was no other reason for his hepatitis, and the disease went away when he stopped taking the herb, and the authors suggested that doctors be aware of a possible relationship between the artemisinin and hepatitis.

5. Various herbs when taken before surgery

Dr. David Rowe, a plastic surgeon, was operating on a patient when he noticed an unusual amount of bleeding.

“The tissue was just oozing, and we couldn’t figure out why,” he remembered, noting that the patient had told him he wasn’t taking any supplements. “After the surgery I asked the patient, ‘Are you sure you’re not taking anything?’ and he said, ‘Oh, yes, I’m taking this, this and this.’ ”

In a paper published this year in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Rowe listed about a dozen herbs that should be avoided within two weeks of surgery, including common ones such as garlic, ginseng and echinacea. Some increase bleeding and some affect the heart, and others interfere with anesthesia or other drugs.

It’s imperative that you tell your surgeon absolutely every natural remedy you’re taking, says Rowe, an assistant professor of plastic surgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. Studies have shown that 60 to 70 percent of patients don’t tell their physicians about supplements.

He tells his patients to read their supplement labels carefully.

“One supplement can have 10 or 15 things in it, so you may not know what you’re on, which is really scary for us surgeons,” he said.

As for Grant, she’s still feeling tingling and numbness in her legs and feet even three years later.

Mansour: The Aqsa Mosque is exposed to real threats

NABLUS, (PIC)– Hamas lawmaker Mona Mansour stressed Thursday that the Aqsa Mosque is exposed to real threats as a result of the ongoing Israeli violations against it, warning that Israel is waging an unprecedented barbaric and brutal war on the whole city of occupied Jerusalem aimed at obliterating its Arab and Islamic identity.

“Since the first day of the occupation of Jerusalem city, the Zionist gangs have been seeking under flimsy historical pretexts to control the city, both west and east,” MP Mansour underlined.

She said that the Aqsa Mosque is facing demolition threats as a result of Israeli excavations taking place beneath it, noting that parts of the Mosque sustained cave-ins and fractures.

For his part, Hamas lawmaker Khalil Al-Raba’ee, a prisoner in Israeli jails, condemned in a leaked letter the expansion of settlement and apartheid wall, the demolition of homes and displacement of families as a real Judaization holocaust in the 21st century.

MP Raba’ee stressed the need for one united Palestinian position supported by all Arab and Muslim efforts in the world to confront Judaization schemes in Jerusalem and defend all Palestinian rights.

UN Security Council hails polls in Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 21 (APP): The UN Security Council on Thursday  welcomed the holding of the presidential and provincial council elections in Afghanistan, and condemned those who sought to disrupt the process. In a statement read to the press here, British UN Ambassador John Sawers, who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for August, congratulated the people of Afghanistan “on their participation in these historic elections.”

Despite Taliban attacks in 15 provinces, millions of Afghans on Thursday went to 7,000 polling stations across the country to choose their president, who is elected for a five-year tenure and could serve a maximum of two terms.

Among the 41 candidates, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and former Financial Minister Ashraf Ghani are main rivals of President Hamid Karzai, who won the 2004 presidential election with 55 percent of the vote.

Karzai hailed the election a success, praising the Afghan people for braving Taliban “bombs and intimidations.” His government said at least 26 people have been killed in the attacks. The vote counting could take about three weeks and the final result is expected to be announced on Sept. 17.

“The members of the Security Council welcome the holding of the presidential and provincial council elections in Afghanistan on Aug. 20, 2009,” the statement said.

“The members of the Council reiterate the importance of these elections as Afghanistan, working together with other members of the international community, continues to make progress towards its goals and congratulate the people of Afghanistan on their participation in these historic elections,” it said.

NKorean condolence delegation arrives in Seoul

SEOUL: A high-level North Korean delegation arrived in Seoul on Friday to pay respects to late former President Kim Dae-jung, a rare visit that raised hopes of improved relations between the tense neighbors.
A plane carrying the six-member delegation landed Friday afternoon, Gimpo airport official Park Hyun-il told newsmen. He did not provide further details.
The convoy is to head straight for the National Assembly, where Kim’s body will lie in state until his funeral Sunday. Kim, 85, died Tuesday.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry said the delegation is headed by senior Workers’ Party official Kim Ki Nam and includes the country’s spy chief, Kim Yang Gon.
It was not immediately clear whether the North Koreans would hold talks with South Korean officials before returning home Saturday.
Unification Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung told reporters no other itinerary for the North Koreans had been set.
However, the trip — the first by North Korean officials to the South in nearly two years — could provide a valuable opportunity for contact between officials from the two Koreas, which technically remain at war.
Ties have been tense since South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative, took office last year, abandoning the previous administration’s “Sunshine Policy” of reaching out to the communist North with aid.
Kim Dae-jung, a longtime defender of democracy and champion of reconciliation on the Korean peninsula, was the architect of the Sunshine Policy.
After holding a historic summit in 2000 with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, South Korea’s Kim won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his efforts at engaging the North after decades of inter-Korean tensions.
Kim Jong Il sent a condolence message to Kim’s family on Wednesday. North Korean media announced the next day that he approved sending a delegation to Seoul to visit the mourning site.
North Korea has only dispatched a condolence delegation only once before — a one-day trip in 2001 during the mourning period for Chung Ju-yung, the founder of South Korea’s Hyundai Group, which funded the first inter-Korean joint projects.
