HUNDREDS OF ARMED HAN CHINESE MARCH IN URUMQI

protest-china33Police fired tear gas Tuesday to try to restore order as hundreds of Han Chinese armed with clubs marched through the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, smashing shops and knocking over food stalls. According to AP, the city, where rioting and ethnic clashes killed 156 people two days ago, was extremely tense, with security officials breaking up a separate protest by the train station. Also, women faced off with armed Chinese police, wailing for the release of their sons and husbands detained after the riots.

Police used loudspeakers to appeal to the Han Chinese crowd to stop, but a group of about 300 protesters were joined by two other columns of marchers on Jiefang Nan Road.

US ATTACK KILLS 12 IN PAKISTAN

death71US missiles slammed into Pakistan’s south Waziristan region on Tuesday, killing at least 12 civilians in the latest in a flurry of cross border violations. If AP is to be believed, five foreigners were among the dead in the attack in South Waziristan close to the Afghan border.

It said two missiles hit Jangara, a village close to Makeen.

IMAM ALI (AS), THE KA’BA OF BELIEF

ali4Heartiest felicitations to you on a very auspicious day. Today, the 13th of Rajab is the day when the Holy Ka’ba in Mecca came alive with the birth in its sacred precincts of a person who continues to transcend history and all historical developments. He is the Commander of the Faithful, the Leader of the Pious, Imam Ali ibn Abil Taleb (PBUH), the dearest cousin, ward, son-in-law, and divinely-designated vicegerent of the Almighty’s Last Messenger to mankind, Prophet Mohammad (blessings of God upon him and his progeny).

What could be written about a man, whose birthplace Divine Providence decreed to be the holiest of all holy spots, that is, the Ka’ba, and who was martyred 63 years later during communion with the Lord in prayer in the Grand Mosque of Kufa, also a symbolic House of God?
No, no mortal can dwell on the virtues of the person who reposes in peace in the company of his illustrious forbears, Adam and Noah, in the golden-domed mausoleum of Najaf that continues to be the focal point of world attention despite the American occupation of the land of Iraq.
He reigns supreme over human hearts and stands steadfast similar to the proverbial firmness of his site of birth towards which foreheads all over the globe bow in prostration and around which all pilgrims revolve in reverence. No doubt, his cousin and father-in-law, the Prophet had rightly remarked as recorded by all denominations of Islam, including our Sunni brethren:

“O Ali! Your position is like that of the Ka’ba.” The Prophet had also said:

“Ali is with truth and truth is with Ali.”

These immortal words are indeed food for thought for all seekers of truth from anywhere on the Planet, especially since we are celebrating the blessed birth anniversary of the Founder of the only instance of the government of social justice, Imam Ali (PBUH).

The 13th of Rajab has once again dawned to fill the hearts of believers with joy. Such is the soothing effect of his name on the hearts and minds of believers that even those whose homes and hearths have been destroyed by the US occupiers of Iraq and whose dear ones killed, that they leave aside their worldly grievances and join the celestial angels in celebrating the birthday of the fulcrum of belief; faith in whom ensures the eternal bliss of paradise, and enmity to whom leads to the abysmal depths of infernal hell.

A famous hadith quoted by Abu Bakr from the Prophet says:

On the Day of Judgement none will be allowed by the angels to pass the sirat or the bridge leading to paradise, unless they possess the document of Ali’s wilaya, that is, God-given authority.

His multi-dimensional personality is certainly beyond the ken of ordinary human beings. He continues to glow as brilliantly as he did in his lifetime. No doubt he was of the same celestial light as Prophet Muhammad (blessings of God upon him and his progeny). The Prophet has said in this regard: “I and Ali are of the same light.”

On the 13th of Rajab, over 1450 lunar years ago, the holy Ka’ba in Mecca came alive. Suddenly the wall of Abraham’s edifice, built wholly for God Almighty at the dawn of creation, parted and gave way to a lady who was praying to the One and Only Creator to ease her blessed burden. The wall closed in behind her as she entered, in order to prove it was not a haphazard incident but a manifest miracle. The spectacle was mind-boggling for the Arab infidels who rushed towards the door of the Ka’ba to try to break in, but the locks held firmly fast. It was even more baffling for the few Christians that lived in the then obscure Mecca. Those of them blessed with insight realized that Fatema bint Asad, the wife of the noble Ishmaelite patriarch Abu Taleb, was certainly carrying in her womb a soul greater than the Messiah. If not, how could the symbolic house of the Lord allow her to enter its sancta sanctorum, when centuries earlier the Virgin Mary had been commanded by God to leave Bayt ol-Moqaddas and go elsewhere for giving birth to Prophet Jesus (PBUH)!
It was a divinely unique way for heralding the birth of the person who combined in his peerless personality the virtues of not just Jesus, but all other prominent prophets such as Adam, Noah, Abraham and Moses. No wonder, he was named Ali, meaning the “Lofty” – an attribute of his Creator the Lord Most High – and was destined to be groomed by no less a personality than that greatest of all human beings, the Almighty’s Last and Greatest of all Messengers, Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).

The multi-dimensional personality of Imam Ali (PBUH) cannot be fathomed by a brief radio programme. He is a person who transcends history and all historical developments. He embodied all such excellent qualities as piety, bravery, generosity, magnanimity, modesty, wisdom, justice, insight, eloquence of speech, etc. to the extent that mankind will forever remain indebted to him.
Three days after the 13th of Rajab, as the walls of the Ka’ba parted for the second time and this time to allow Fatema bint Asad to step out with the radiant baby, the two shafts of divine light met each other. Cousin smiled at cousin, as beaming parents looked on, although 30 years of earthly age separated them. From the day the Prophet decided to personally take charge of the toddler Ali (PBUH), the destiny of mankind was revolutionized. If the former would be chosen by God Almighty as the last and the greatest of divine messengers on Mount Hera, the latter would be selected by the One and Only Creator as the first infallible Imam on the Day of Ghadir, that is, 18th of Zilhijja, in the year 10 AH.
In between these two memorable dates, that spanned a period of almost 23 years, were to fall the decisive events in the history of monotheism such as the fateful Night of the Hijrah, on which the Imam slept on the Prophet’s bed in order enable the latter to migrate to Medina from Mecca. Mention could also be made of the crucial battles of Badr, Ohod, Khandaq, Khaibar, where it was the valour of Imam Ali (PBUH) that saved infant Islam. Another glorious event that ensured the truth of Islam was the memorable Day of Mubahela or dialogue with the Christians of Najran, where Imam Ali (PBUH) along with his two young sons, Imam Hasan and Imam Husain (peace upon them) as well as his wife Hazrat Fatema (peace upon her), the Prophet’s daughter, accompanied the Prophet, as commanded by God to establish the supremacy of Islam. As a matter of fact, the pivotal role of Imam Ali (PBUH) is evident at every state in the flowering of Islam as the lieutenant of Prophet Mohammad (blessings of God upon him and his progeny).

After the passing away of the Prophet, the other dynamic aspects of the valourous, pious, patient and generous Imam were to bloom. He compiled the Holy Qur’an between two covers; he laid the foundations of Arabic grammar; he displayed the art of eloquence, he bore no malice towards those who had deprived him for 25 years of his divinely designated political rights and he even through his gems of advice saved them from sure disaster, as is evident by the words of the second caliph: “If there was no Ali Omar would have perished.”
Imam Ali (PBUH) is thus the personification of wisdom, forbearance, generosity and administrative abilities that culminate in the model government of social justice that he set up from his capital of Kufa in Iraq, when the caliphate came begging at his threshold.

OBAMA'S DIPLOMACY TO BE TESTED IN RUSSIA

obama-michUS President Barack Obama’s diplomacy is about to get a stern test in Russia, home of a wary public, a two-headed leadership and a lingering bit of hard feelings. According to AP, Obama arrives in Moscow on Monday for a full-scale two-day summit, the first of its kind since the early part of the George W. Bush presidency. He is sure to emerge with tangible signs of progress – including another step toward the world’s two largest nuclear powers reducing their arsenals.

But what much of the world will watch for are signs of Obama’s relationship with Russia’s two leaders, President Dmitry Medvedev and his mentor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
Both sides are talking of improving their ties and wanting to show some early results.

140 DEAD IN BLOODY RIOTS IN CHINA'S XINJIANG

protest-chinaAt least 140 people have been killed and more than 800 others injured as ethnic violence erupted in China’s restive Xinjiang region. According to Xinhua, a government spokesman confirmed on Monday that at least 140 people were killed, after hundreds of locals took to the streets of the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday evening — burning and smashing vehicles and confronting police and anti-riot troops.

Xinhua did not say how many people were involved or how many have been arrested, but AFP said that the confrontation involved around 3,000 Uighurs, and that at least 300 had been arrested.
The unrest had followed a protest against government handling of a clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in far southern China in late June, when two Uighurs died.
Police used electric cattle prods and fired gunshots into the air to try to quell the unrest. Three people from China’s majority Han Chinese ethnic group died in the attacks and an overnight curfew was declared.

IRAN DEPLOYS WARSHIPS TO GULF OF ADEN

ship-iranThe Iranian Navy has deployed two warships to join international efforts to preserve shipping security in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden. According to IRIB, Iran’s Deputy Naval Commander, Gholam-Reza Khadem, said Monday that the dispatched warships are set to replace aging vessels and protect Iranian merchant containers and oil tankers from Somali pirates in the volatile Gulf of Aden. The dispatch comes only a week after the Iranian navy saved one if its giant oil tankers from the grips of Somali pirates.

Khadem said “Pirates have stepped up attacks on Iranian merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden, so we have decided to send two more warships to patrol the area and help keep everything under control.”
Khadem said Iran’s decision to join the international fight against piracy in the key shipping-lanes off the coast of Somalia has been “rather positive”.

Assad Won't Get Golan If Ties Kept with Iran, Hezbollah

1c0345e6-1489-40c1-94a1-8a7148330194_topIsraeli President Shimon Peres said on Monday that Syrian President Bashar Assad must understand that Israel would not hand over the occupied Golan Heights on a “silver platter” so long as Damascus continued its ties with Iran and Hezbollah.
Peres told visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier that a true “peace process” between the long time enemies would have to take place at the negotiating table, without preconditions or mediation. “Israel is ready to return to the negotiating table immediately, but without any pre-conditions,” Peres said when asked if he had a message for Steinmeier to relay to Assad.

Syrian officials last month threatened to take back the occupied Golan Heights by force if a peace agreement involving the return of the strategic plateau is not reached with Israel.

A group calling itself the Syrian Committee for the Freedom of the Golan said it would take steps to regain control of the territory, adding that Israel has not shown willingness to achieve peace or to return what they called “Syrian land.”

Just prior to that, Assad rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s offer to resume peace talks between the two countries from “point zero.”

Assad said the negotiations should resume from the point at which they stopped under former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, when the two sides had planned to formulate mutual commitments that would enable the talks to move to a direct negotiations stage.

German Foreign Minister Steinmeier began talks with Israeli leaders on Monday morning as part of a 40-hour trip to Tel Aviv, Damascus and Beirut.

Steinmeier landed in Tel Aviv before dawn and opened his talks by meeting Peres at his residence in occupied Jerusalem. He was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and opposition leader Tzipi Livni later in the day.

A planned stopover in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, which was to include an inaugural ceremony for some new, German-funded classrooms, was cancelled due to an unannounced, last-minute visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Jordan, a spokeswoman at the German representation in Ramallah confirmed.

A key aspect of the discussions with the Israeli government is expected to be U.S. and European Union calls for a halt to settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

German officials said Steinmeier also hopes to persuade neighboring Arab states to take a more active role in diplomatic efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The visit is Steinmeier’s 14th since taking office in 2005.

He is scheduled to meet Tuesday with President Bashar Assad in Syria and in Lebanon with prime minister-designate Saad Hariri.

Oil Prices Falls Reaching 63 Dollars

oil-pricesOil prices fell sharply on Monday, extending heavy losses seen last week caused by poor jobs data in the United States, the world’s biggest energy-consuming nation, analysts said. Prices slumped despite a new pipeline attack in Nigeria, an important exporter of oil. In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August dropped 1.73 dollars to 63.88 dollars a barrel. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for August delivery, shed 1.58 dollars to 64.05 dollars a barrel. “Prices are extending their losses from last week based on the poor jobs report in the United States,” said Tony Nunan, an energy risk manager with Mitsubishi Corp. “People are starting to wonder about the strength of the US economic recovery… This does not look good for oil demand because it means that consumer spending will remain weak.” A closely watched US Labor Department report last week showed US job losses had surged more than expected to 467,000 in June, pushing the unemployment rate to a new 26-year high of 9.5 percent. The report, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, reversed the improvement seen the previous month when job losses fell to 322,000. Crude futures slid on Monday despite fresh unrest in Nigeria.

North Korea Boasts of Military Strength after Missile Launches

north-koreaNorth Korea Sunday hailed the strength of its military after it launched a salvo of ballistic missiles in a show of firepower that earned international criticism. “Thanks to the army-first policy of our party, our defense industry… laid a firm foundation to produce any kind of (weapons) needed for modern warfare freely,” the ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said in a commentary.
The army-first policy of the communist country has given the military the capacity to hit enemies with a “merciless” strike, it added.

The comments from North Korea came a day after it test-fired seven ballistic missiles in an act of defiance apparently timed for the US Independence Day holiday.

The launches further fuelled regional tensions after Pyongyang’s nuclear test in May. Professor Kim Yong-Hyun of Seoul’s Dongguk University said the launches were designed to demonstrate the country’s improved missile capacity. “The weekend sabre-rattling, apparently designed to demonstrate the country’s improved missile capacity and military firepower, produced its intended effect,” he said.

It also sent a strong warning to the United States that North Korean missiles could pose a serious challenge to regional peace, he said. Washington’s relatively mild reaction showed US officials do not want “a catastrophic confrontation with North Korea or heightened regional tensions,” he added.

Saturday’s tests brought a new round of verbal condemnation from diplomats and politicians in neighboring countries, the U.S., France, Israel and Australia. China, North Korea’s closest ally and chief economic benefactor, urged “calm and restraint,” the lesser of the two types of criticisms its foreign ministry usually issues after North Korean provocations. The U.S. State Department urged North Korea to “refrain from actions that aggravate tensions and return to denuclearization talks.”

Defense analysts in several countries, including the U.S. and South Korea, will take several weeks to determine whether Saturday’s tests showed that North Korea is advancing its ability to carry nuclear warheads on those missiles.

Military and intelligence analysts in the U.S. and elsewhere several weeks ago tracked movement of long-range missiles to launchpads in North Korea and, for a time, prepared for the prospect that it would launch such a missile on July 4 or 5, as it did in 2006. Over the past two weeks, however, they detected no signs of further preparations for such a launch.

Japan Mulls New Missile Defense System to Counter Airborne Attacks

japan-probJapan is considering introducing a new type of missile defense system to counter airborne attacks, notably from North Korea, a local newspaper said Sunday.
Japan has two types of defense against airborne attacks – the warship-installed Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) and Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3), a surface-to-air missile that tracks and hits incoming targets. It plans to complete the shield by early 2011, deploying the PAC-3 missiles at 11 bases and setting up SM-3 missiles on several warships. But the two systems still will not be enough to cover the nation’s territory completely, the Mainichi daily said, without citing sources.

The Japanese defense ministry is considering introducing another surface-to-air missile, the US-developed Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in addition to SM-3 and PAC-3, the newspaper said.

While the PAC-3 has a range of about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles), a THAAD interceptor can cover more than 100 kilometers, making it possible to defend the entire nation if deployed at three to four bases, the report said.

Washington and Tokyo have been working jointly to install a shield against attacks from North Korea, which fired a missile over Japan’s main island in 1998 and tested an atom bomb in 2006.

Hariri after Meeting President Sleiman: Gov’t Formation Made in Lebanon

hariri-meetingLebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said the country’s next government is to be made in Lebanon adding that the protocol for forming Lebanon’s next cabinet is to be issued from Baabda palace. “Lebanon’s government is formed in Lebanon. The protocol for forming the next cabinet is to be issued from Baabda and any other talk is false,” Hariri said.
Following his meeting with President Michel Suleiman on Saturday at Baabda presidential palace, Hariri told reporters that he wants to have the best relations with Syria adding: “everything is good in its own time.”

On Saturday evening Hariri received at his residence in Qreitem Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and later Iranian ambassador to Lebanon Mohammed Reza Shibani, who told reporters “my country has an established and basic stance in strengthening the Lebanese line and working on firmly establishing Lebanese national unity among all sects and political parties in this society.”

With the full support of US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, “the March 14” parties pressured Hariri to refuse a proposal to visit Damascus, threatening him that in case he decides to visit it before finalizing the cabinet formation process, they will boycott the cabinet.

The Lebanese Forces bloc seems to be the main “sponsor” of this trend within the March 14 bloc, alongside the so-called “March 14 Christians,” including the Phalange party…

Geagea reiterated his full opposition to any visit made by Hariri to Damascus at the current stage. Speaking to Reuters, he warned that such visit would be a move with no tangible results. Even more, Geagea said that such visit would not lead only to nowhere, “but it would also cause negative and dangerous repercussions.”

MP NICOLAS TO AL-MANAR: MARCH 14 CHRISTIANS WANT LARGEST CABINET SHARE TO WEAKEN AOUN
Meanwhile, Change and Reform bloc MP Nabil Nicolas said on a Sunday interview with Al-Manar TV Channel that the Christian parties of the March 14 alliance “want the largest share in the cabinet in order to weaken Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun.”

He added, “Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri’s allies affirm that the cabinet is formed abroad, thus, any tensions between the countries working on the cabinet formation will negatively reflect on Lebanon.”

MP Nicolas said that Aoun “visited Syria to have normalized relations. We are not dependent on any dialogue.”

Nicolas also warned about Palestinian naturalization, saying “the world is only interested in Lebanon because it considers it as the appropriate country for Palestinian naturalization.”

Sunday Times Says Saudis to Let IAF Use Airspace for Iran Attack; Israel Denies

israel1“The Saudis are very concerned about an Iranian nuclear bomb, even more than the Israelis.” These words were quoted by a former head of research in Israeli intelligence as telling a British Newspaper Sunday Times.
Sunday Times has published a report in which it said that the Saudi Arabia would allow the Israeli Air Force jets to fly over the Arab kingdom in order to raid the Iranian nuclear sites adding that although there were no formal diplomatic relations, Mossad has maintained “working relations” with the Saudis, according to the report.

So the UK paper report said that Saudi Arabia has agreed to turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites, adding that Mossad Director Meir Dagan held secret talks with Saudi officials earlier this year to discuss the possibility, and has briefed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the matter.

“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israel Air Force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source was quoted in the newspaper as saying last week.

Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defense source confirmed to the Sunday Times that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis.

According to the report, recent riots in Iran following a presidential election and the instability in the country have underscored concerns among what it described as “moderate Sunni Arab states” that it may emerge as a belligerent nuclear power.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace.

Bolton, who talked to several Arab leaders during his visit, added that “none of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”

According to Bolton, Arab states would condemn a raid when they spoke at the UN but would be privately relieved to see “the threat of an Iranian bomb” removed.

The former American ambassador also referred to the Israeli strike on an alleged Syrian nuclear facility in 2007, adding that “to this day, the Israelis haven’t admitted the specifics but there’s one less nuclear facility in Syria . . .”

ISRAEL DENIES SAUDI ARABIA GAVE PERMISSION TO USE ITS AIRSPACE
Meanwhile, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied on Sunday the Sunday Times report saying Saudi Arabia gave Israel permission to fly over its airspace to attack Iran.

Israel Sends Subs through Suez Canal

israelThe Israeli Navy has returned to sailing through the Suez Canal, recently sending one of its advanced Dolphin-class submarines through the waterway to participate in naval maneuvers off the Eilat coast in the Red Sea, the Jerusalem Post has learned.
According to the daily, Israeli sources said the decision to allow navy vessels to sail through the canal was made recently and was a definite “change of policy” within the service. In 2005, then OC Navy Adm. David Ben-Bashat decided to stop sending Israeli ships through the canal due to growing “threats” in the area.

However, the Dolphin-class submarine sailed through last month to get from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. Israeli officials said it passed through the canal above water, and that it was not done covertly. “It is a question of policy,” a senior officer explained. “Navy vessels have sailed through the canal on several occasions recently.”

“The significance of the move was debatable, but it could be interpreted as a message to Iran and a demonstration of strengthening ties between Egypt and Israel,” the Post said.

In the event of a conflict with Iran, and if Israel decided to involve its three Dolphin-class submarines – which according to foreign reports can fire nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and serve as a second-strike platform – the quickest route would be to send them through the Suez Canal.
The only way to get to the Gulf of Oman without refueling would be to go through the canal. With their reported 4,500 nautical mile range, taking the long way, around Africa, would require the Dolphins to make at least two stops for refueling at a friendly port, or for fuel to be replenished at sea.

Hezbollah Can Hit Tel Aviv with 600 Rockets Daily, for 60 Days: Maariv

hizbullahCalm on the Lebanese Palestinian border does not necessarily involve good news for Israel, a report published by the Israeli daily Maariv said on Friday.

The report addresses the growing capacity of Hezbollah in Lebanon, three years after the 2006 war.

The journal emphasized that Hezbollah is tremendously magnifying its military capability and compiling new combative techniques in addition to a remarkable increase in the number of its fighters and trainers. The Maariv report pointed that Hezbollah is seeking to reach a level of capability that would enable it to launch a thousand rockets on “Israel” during a 60-day period of time.

Citing Israeli intelligence assessments, the Israeli daily also estimated that the party was close to reaching this level of capacity as it can today send between 500 and 600 rockets a day to Tel Aviv and surrounding areas.

The report added that unlike the rockets fired during the 2006 war, Hezbollah’s present rockets are mostly long-range and mid-range missiles and in case a new war breaks out, the daily said, the center of “Israel” will be targeted with salvos of such rockets.

Maariv’s report also said that Hezbollah has spread its rockets in a more complicated manner for Israel to figure out, as most of them are heavier caliber rockets, more precise and longer in range.

The number of trained fighters, the report says, has increased from 5000 to 8000 well trained fighters and that Hezbollah is building fortified garrisons and underground systems to serve an organized deployment of fighters and field commanders between north and south Litani River areas.
Maarvi described Hezbollah’s formations as a compact defense system that enjoys the ability of ‘reciprocal coverage’, artillery, anti-armor and intelligence capabilities in addition to the ability to deploy special unit forces.
In case a confrontation takes place, the report said, a self-martyrdom unit would be called in to break through the border line and conduct operation against Israeli forces inside occupied territories, including martyrdom operations.

Maariv concluded that Hezbollah assumes that in case of confrontation, the Israeli army will go for a large-scale ground assault. This is why, it said, Hezbollah is preparing itself for such a scenario with a defensive battle relying on the aforementioned formations and the party’s goal will be to continue firing rockets deep inside occupied territories for at least two months in a fatal pace, Maariv estimated.

Russia: Iran current developments, an internal affair

russRussian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko on Thursday said that his country is seriously opposed to imposing sanctions against Iran which he said runs counter to international rules and is quite unconstructive. Speaking to reporters in a press conference on Thursday, he said pursuing a sanction policy with regards to Iran’s developments would be unproductive and will exacerbate the situation. Referring to friendly ties between Moscow and Tehran, he said Russia is to broaden ties with Iran based on mutual cooperation and good-neighborly ties in all fields. Israel "wantonly" destroyed Gaza: Amnesty

JERUSALEM: Amnesty International said on Thursday Israel inflicted “wanton destruction” in the Gaza Strip in attacks that often targeted Palestinian civilians during an offensive in December and January in the Hamas-run enclave.

The London-based rights group, in a 117-page report on the 22 days of fighting, also criticised the Islamist movement Hamas for rocket attacks on Israel, which it called “war crimes”.

Among other conclusions, Amnesty said it found no evidence to support Israeli claims that Gaza guerrillas deliberately used civilians as “human shields”, but it did, however, cite evidence that Israeli troops put children and other civilians in harm’s way by forcing them to remain in homes taken over by soldiers.

Amnesty International said some 1,400 Palestinians were killed in Israel’s Operation Cast Lead, including 300 children and hundreds of innocent civilians, a figure broadly in line with those from the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza and the independent Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

HRW: 'Israel' violated war laws in Gaza

gaza-hrw-fthAn international human rights group on Tuesday accused Zionist regime of violating the laws of war and killing civilians in recent Gaza offensive. In a new report issued Tuesday, the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that Zionist regime used the most precise weapon in its arsenal-guided missiles fired from unmanned drones- and killed tens of people who were not taking part in hostilities. In the 39-page report titled “Precisely Wrong: Gaza Civilians Killed by Israeli Drone-Launched Missiles,” the organization have reported a total of 42 drone attacks. Israel launched its three-week war against Gaza in late December. Some 1,400 Palestinians, including more than 900 civilians, were murdered, according to Gaza health officials and human rights groups. “Human Rights Watch found that Israeli forces failed to take all feasible precautions to verify that these targets were combatants, as required by the laws of war, or that they failed to distinguish between combatants and civilians,” the group said in a press release. “Drone operators can clearly see their targets on the ground and also divert their missiles after launch,” said Marc Garlasco, HRW senior military analyst and co-author of the report. “Given these capabilities, Israel needs to explain why these civilian deaths took place.” The organization also demanded Zionist regime to release all video recordings taken by the drone planes before and during their strikes into Gaza.

Supporters of insurgents not to have dialogue with Iran unless they apologize: Firouzabadi

policeTEHRAN (ISNA)-Iran Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Hassan Firouzabadi asserted on Wednesday that supporters of insurgents in post-election events do not have the right to hold dialogue with Iran unless they apologize.

The European Union is a “failed political and economic treaty” which faced European people distrust in elections, he said referring to Italians 15 percent turnout in EU parliamentary elections.

Therefore the members of the EU have lost credit in P5+1, he added.

Pointing to the “ridiculous interventions” of European Union in “unique and glorious” presidential elections of Iran, Firouzabadi added, “the P5+1 enmity with Iranian nation is obvious and the EU foreign policy chief has never had a stable stance and was not backed by the member states, therefore considering the fact that they have appeared as supporters of insurgents in Iran, they are not qualified to hold talks with Iran.”

They do not have the right to talk about dialogue with Iran before apologizing for their big mistakes and showing practically that they are regretful, he asserted.
